TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama football’s Derrick Henry collected his third weekly honor after being named the Maxwell Award Player of the Week for his performance against Wisconsin, the organization announced on Thursday morning. The junior running back was also named SEC Offensive Player of the Week on Monday and the National Offensive Player of the Week by the Football Writers Association of America on Tuesday afternoon.
Henry stood out in his first contest as the Crimson Tide’s true starter, rushing for 147 yards on only 13 carries while crossing the goal line for three touchdowns against the No. 20 Wisconsin Badgers. His 11.3 yards per carry average was a career high (minimum 10 carries) and his yardage and touchdowns were also high marks for the three-year back. For his career, Henry has surpassed the century mark for yardage six different times with four of those games coming inside domed stadiums.
In his last three games, including two from last season, the Yulee, Fla., native has rushed for 383 yards on 46 carries to average 8.3 yards per touch while adding six rushing touchdowns. He has also been a force inside domed stadiums for his career, collecting 593 yards on 72 carries and notching eight touchdowns on the ground. In those contests he has also reeled in five catches for 127 yards and a touchdown.
The Crimson Tide will put together its final practice of the week this afternoon as the team readies for this weekend’s matchup with Middle Tennessee. Alabama is currently riding a 16-game home winning streak, tied for longest in the nation, and is 8-0 under head coach Nick Saban in home openers.
