Christians must reject a Mike Pence GOP Presidential Bid in 2024.
The signs are already here that Mike Pence is running for President. Politico spotlighted the former Vice President and Indiana governor’s political resurrection story as Pence preps to seek the GOP nomination for 2024.
According to Politico, “Nearly a year after he was booed and jeered as a ‘traitor’ at the Faith and Freedom Coalition conference in Orlando for his refusal to overturn the election results, Pence’s tightly scripted comeback ahead of a potential 2024 presidential bid is showing returns.”
That has always been Mike Pence. While Pence would be better than any Democrat, there are legitimate problems with Pence. Let’s start with his betrayal.
No, I’m not talking about what Pence did or did not do on January 6, 2021. I’m talking about Mike Pence’s failure while governor of Indiana. Pence folded over religious freedom.
Politico explains this in a 2016 story, Evangelicals still peeved over Pence’s religious freedom act flip. According to Politico, “In 2015, Pence initially signed a Religious Freedom Restoration Act, or RFRA. He then backpedaled on language that critics feared could be discriminatory against gay people, but that some evangelicals felt was essential to defending religious freedom.”
Pence was attacked by leftists for the bill. The ACLU being one.
“The timing of this legislation is important to understanding its intent: The bill was introduced as a backlash reaction to achieving marriage equality for same-sex couples in Indiana,” said Jane Henegar, executive director of the ACLU of Indiana. “We are deeply disappointed that the governor and state lawmakers have been tone-deaf to the cries of legions of Hoosiers – including businesses, convention leaders, faith communities, and more than 10,000 people who signed petitions against the bill – who say they don’t want this harmful legislation to impair the reputation of our state and harm our ability to attract the best and brightest to Indiana.”
Jeremiah’s question seems appropriate here: “If thou hast run with the footmen, and they have wearied thee, then how canst thou contend with horses? and if in the land of peace, wherein thou trustedst, they wearied thee, then how wilt thou do in the swelling of Jordan?”
Contrast Pence’s record in the Culture War with other potential 2024 GOP nominees. Would Ron DeSantis cave like this? DeSantis is willing to fight (and do what it takes to win) against Leftists. Pence pretends to fight and like his buddy Russell Moore (pictured above with Pence) retreats faster than the French.
That 2016 Politico story provides this colorful analysis of Pence.
“When it came down to it, he crumbled under pressure. That, for many evangelical conservatives, has been something that is a red flag,” said South Carolina-based Pastor Mike Gonzalez in Politico.
If Pence crumbled under the Culture War pressure as governor of Indiana in 2015, what will he do in the pressure cooker of contemporary US politics?
Expect Pence to enjoy lavish praise from Evangelical Elites. Christianity Today being one such outlet that will promote a Pence candidacy. You will be told over and over again how virtuous and how Christian Mike Pence is.
And yet, in the big matter when Pence had the chance to stand for religious liberty against the leftist hordes—Pence folded. Never forget that. And as long as other options exist in the Republican 2024 field, stand Against Pence.
