Impressions of South Carolina 27 North Carolina 10

It is a testament to just how far South Carolina has come under Steve Spurrier that some could find fault with a 27-10 win over North Carolina. During the game, announcers questioned Jadeveon Clowney’s conditioning. At this point, it would seem premature to question Clowney’s football conditioning. Clowney played the game after not eating a pregame meal and having very little to eat in the 24 hours leading into the game. If he looked tired, winded and out of a few plays, then it was probably because he played the game despite the physical challenges of a real illness.

Now, if the problem persists next week then there will be reason to question South Carolina’s offseason conditioning. Next week presents an increase in the difficulty of schedule when South Carolina faces Georgia in a game with major SEC East implications.

The South Carolina offense looked good with the potential to create big, explosive plays. The first score of the season for South Carolina was a 65-yard pass from Connor Shaw to Gamecock receiver Shaq Roland. RB Mike Davis got into the big play highlights with a 75-yard touchdown run to finish the scoring at 27-10.

The Gamecocks finished the game with over 400 yards of total offense with 228 yards rushing and 178 yards passing. The South Carolina defense surrendered only 293 yards of total offense with 99 yards on the ground and 194 yards in the air.

It wasn’t a perfect performance, but considering how slow some Steve Spurrier teams have started the season, this was a positive heading into a big game next week.
