REPORT: Southern Baptist church member leads Democratic fight to impeach Trump

A Southern Baptist member of the U.S. House of Representatives has led three votes to impeach President Donald Trump.

A Southern Baptist member of the House of Representatives is leading the fight to impeach President Donald J. Trump, according to a report in the Louisiana Baptist Message. U.S. Rep. Al Green (D- Houston) has tried three teams to bring impeachment up in the House, and lost all three votes. Green is a member of Cullen Missionary Baptist Church in Houston, Texas.

According to the report, “Green’s complaints against the president cited Trump’s tweets (which were condemned as ‘racist’ in a separate House resolution vote largely along political party lines) against four congresswomen, and accused the president of bringing ‘the high office of the president of the United States in contempt, ridicule, disgrace and disrepute’ causing ‘discord among the people of the United States.’”

CNN reported that Rep. Green wanted to move impeachment to punish the president. He said,

“I should not hold off, we should go forward as expeditiously as possible and we should do so because on yesterday we convicted the President … The condemnation was a conviction. Today we have the opportunity to punish,” Green said a reference to the resolution that passed Tuesday condemning racist language used by the President. “As a result of what we did yesterday, the President suffers no harm, he doesn’t have to pay any fine, he’s not going to lose his job. But today we have the opportunity to punish.”

As the Baptist Message sagely noted, there are many prominent Southern Baptists claiming the label of Never Trump, or publicly against Trump. These include Dr. Al Mohler, who employs as his provost an admitted racist, Russell Moore, head of the ERLC and someone who leads the George Soros-funded Evangelical Immigration Table, and Beth Moore, a Bible teacher who is asserting that women can occupy the pulpit in SBC churches on Sunday mornings.

These are troubled times for the largest evangelical, Protestant denomination in America.
