The Adam Greenway Administration Death Watch ends. It is official. Adam Greenway ‘resigns’ as President of SWBTS.
Adam Greenway given sinecure at IMB. Baptist News Global reporting was sound.
Your Southern Baptist Convention word of the day is Sinecure. Because that is how SBC Elites take care of one of their most incompetent members as Adam Greenway resigns as President of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (SWBTS) for some undefined role at the International Mission Board (IMB).
If you are wondering who leaves a position as seminary president where you call the shots to be an underling at IMB—the answer is someone who can’t balance a budget and has made more enemies than friends during his brief three-and-a-half-year tenure at SWBTS.
What this whole event tells you is that SBC Elites take care of their own.
Compare the way that Greenway—who treated individuals like trash—was allowed to save face by resigning to accept an IMB position with the treatment of former SWBTS President Paige Patterson. Sure, this is an obvious demotion; however, it can be spun for the Greenway fanboys as “just following God’s will.”
Only an idiot would believe Greenway left the prestigious job of running SWBTS of his own volition. Greenway was forced out because of the financial condition of SWBTS and the fact that donors are now aware that Greenway is a horrible, un-Christian boss.
The official release is available here. There are some interesting tidbits in the official statement.
Baptist News Global broke the story last night at about 11 p.m. that Adam Greenway was being forced out as President of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (SWBTS). The Baptist News Global story was sound.
The report said Greenway resigned at a Thursday night meeting of the trustee executive committee. This was confirmed in the official release this afternoon. BNG reported that O.S. Hawkins would become interim president. The official release confirmed that.
CR posted its story just after midnight with details highlighting how powerful SBC influencers including a Texas megachurch pastor and others pressured the SWBTS trustees to oust Greenway. We followed that up by highlighting in a later report about noon today that a source said that while financial issues were an important part of this puzzle, the bad treatment of a beloved SBC professor sparked the donor backlash at SWBTS.
What should also be noted is the looming potential federal probe over the Greenway Administration’s mishandling of sexual abuse cases at SWBTS—some of the allegations happened on Adam Greenway’s watch. Did that play a role in trustee concerns? It should have. Only time will tell if it did. There are at least two cases: one involving a female student that CR reported in 2021 and another reported by BNG—though the date is at this time not specified but could be in late 2020.
Perhaps this setback will serve as a wakeup call to the unrepentant liar Adam Greenway. Again, only time will tell.
