RUDE: UT fan welcomes reporter to Knoxville

W hatever happened to the old days of SEC football—the days when it was a gentleman’s sport? The days when fans weren’t absolute pricks to rivals? I guess they are gone. Need proof? Check out the rude reception a member of the press received while driving through Knoxville:

And it’s weird here, because it’s a city and the fans tailgate in the parking lot. So while driving through with my Alabama plate on the back of my car, a UT fan hit my car with a football. Reared back and fired it right into the back windshield. Even my NY plate on the front didn’t stop him. He said, “Now what, Alabama?!” after he did it.

How long until attending an SEC game is as coarse and disgusting as attending an NFL game?

only one other place can compare to this and that is the barn. Went last year and I’ve never seen so many disrespectful people. It’s a shame that people can’t be civil anymore like they are at Bryant-Denny stadium.

Well, I remember last year’s Alabama students tossing drinks and cups on celebrating UGA players after the overtime loss.

I’m afraid this is a problem everyone in the SEC is experiencing. Paul Finebaum talked about how UGA fans were throwing things at his television setup for Fox 6 after UA’s big win this season.

Something has to be done, but what? And will anything stop this?

how can you stop it?there is no way..maybe if you do not allow booze on campus but that won’t happen.i do know this ninety percent of these kind of things only happen when people are drinking.they feel ten feet tall and bullet proof.maybe i am wrong to could be people just don’t have respect for one another and just don’t care.

Cap, the problem with that, though, is the drunken greeks. Nobody at UA likes the greeks, because they are the most classless and disrespectful bunch of students anyone has ever seen. The only complaint I EVER hear from UA students is how lowlife the greeks are and you can credit them for misrepresenting The University during last year’s UGA game (and nailing Kenny Irons in the face with a bottle in 2006 as well).

Alcohol is not the problem. Alcohol only reduces inhibitions and allows one’s true colors to show through. The problem is the promotion of a “thug culture” that celebrates obnoxious behavior.

Until there is a critical mass of people who will stand up for the importance of character and civilized behavior, we will witness these sorts of antics.

I only hope that the pendulum is beginning to swing back in that direction among our young people. It’s up to the parents to teach their children what is expected of them. I’ve tried to do my part with my own kids and I’m proud of them. I know that they wouldn’t behave like that — whether I’m watching them or not.
