Spring briefing: Alabama starts week 2

Spring practice entered the second week for the Alabama Crimson Tide today. Players were made available Monday afternoon so here are videos of 3 Crimson Tide players talking about the work so far. Darius Hanks believes Alabama’s receivers will “make a lot of noise” this season as a group. Hanks also told reporters that both AJ McCarron and Phillip Sims have potential at quarterback for the Crimson Tide. When asked about the difference between former quarterback Greg McElroy and this year’s likely starters, he said both McCarron and Sims might have a slightly stronger arm, and both will need to work to develop the leadership skills needed for an Alabama quarterback.

Hanks also said Alabama’s tight end Michael Williams is a force and the tight end’s size is one of the best assets. It is one of the first things to come to mind.

Hanks added that Alabama’s corner Menzie has looked good this spring.

Williams talked about the competition at tight end at Alabama. He also said the competition at quarterback has seen split reps. “Both of them have pretty strong arms,” he said. “You realize you’ve got to come out of your break quickly with both of them.” As for leadership, “Both are great leaders,” he said.

Alabama defensive lineman Damion Square said Williams is a good blocker and a “good guy.” The most important goal for Square is to build chemistry on the defense. Having confidence in one another or believing in one another is what will make a defense successful, according to Square. Much more from Square and the other players in the videos below.

About Alabama’s practice this week:
Crimson Tide Football Returns to Work (courtesy of UA)
The University of Alabama football team returned to the practice field on Monday to begin its second week of spring workouts.

The Crimson Tide moved back outside to the Thomas-Drew Practice Facility and worked in full pads for the third time this spring. It was UA’s fifth practice of the spring as they build toward the spring’s first scrimmage on Saturday, April 2.

Alabama must replace All-American wide receiver Julio Jones in 2011 and will look to a pair of seniors to assume his leadership role both on and off the field. Marquis Maze was second on the team with 38 receptions for 557 yards and three touchdowns a year ago and Darius Hanks was right behind him with 32 grabs for 456 yards and three scores.

“It has been going really well out there,” Hanks said. “This is a new year and a new start and we are going to make a lot of noise (on the field) this year as a receiving corps. I feel like my (leadership) role is huge this year. A lot of the young guys look up to me and in the huddle and I try to get everyone going, not just the wide outs.”

A familiar face from last year took in practice from the sidelines on Monday as Heisman Trophy running back Mark Ingram was in Tuscaloosa as he continues to prepare for next month’s NFL Draft.

The 2011 Tide will return to the practice fields on Wednesday for the sixth workout of 15 this spring. Spring practice culminates on April 16 with the annual Golden Flake A-Day Game at Bryant-Denny Stadium. The game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPNU.

  1. I think Robby Green has lost his mind. It wasn’t bad enough that he phucked up last when we needed him most and lost a year of eligibility to suspension; but now even before he could play a damn down in spring training he’s already got his a$$ suspended again. All the reports I heard from last year was that he was peforming great on the scout team, using his experience to help the young guys. Now he gets his last chance and what the phuck is he thinking? From all the interviews the team seems to have the right attitude. Now if they can just convert it into action on the field like the ’09 team did. RTR!

  2. Damn, just read where Duron Carter, High School All American who played at Ohio St. in 2009 and son of NFL great Cris Carter is transferring to Bama for this season. He attended Coffeeville, Kansas Community College for achedemic reasons in 2010 where he had 44 receptions for 690 yards and 10 TD’s in 9 games. His father does not want him in any college that lacks discipline. Guess that includes Ohio St. and LSU, the 2 other schools he was considering. Cris feels that the strict environment at Alabama and the teaching abilities of Nick Saban will better prepare his son for the NFL and the future. At 6-5 and 210lbs he’s just what we need to step in for Julio. Hell, that may be enough to push us over Florida St. in the ESPN recruiting poll. RTR!
