VIDEO: Sims vs McCarron & Alabama Fan Day

VIDEO: WIAT provides this look at the Alabama quarterback situation. Who will play quarterback when football season begins? Watch the video for comments from both of Alabama’s options: A.J. McCarron and Phillip Sims.

In case you didn’t watch the video, Alabama football coach Nick Saban and offensive coordinator Jim McElwain speak about the quarterback battle, and A.J. McCarron and Phillip Sims also speak about the quaterback situation.

A.J. McCarron said, “We are both similar quarterbacks.” Also, “We come out each day and push each other.”

Sims said, “I think I’m a pretty accurate quarterback. Strong arm, pocket passer. I think I fit real well in our system of pro-style offense. …Whoever the coaches decide to go with as the quarterback, that is the right decision for the team. We have to go along with that. Right now I’m really not concerned about who they name as the starting quarterback.”

Now for details about Alabama’s Fan Day:

Crimson Tide practice in shells for first time
The Alabama football team held its annual fan day festivities at Bryant-Denny Stadium on Sunday. The Crimson Tide practiced in front of an estimated 7,500 fans before holding a 45-minute autograph session on the field following the open practice.

“The first few days of camp have gone really well,” senior Linebacker Courtney Upshaw said. “It is just nice to get back into the swing of things. It was just another typical practice for us today but it was nice to have the fans come out. Especially since the tornado hit this is a big season for the fans as well, so we just want to go out there and show them what we can do and give them a good season.”

The Tide practiced for two hours in the Tuscaloosa humidity in shells for the first time this camp (shorts, shoulder pads and helmets), working on basic offensive, defensive and special team drills.

“We are excited about the challenges and opportunities that this team has this year,” head coach Nick Saban said. “By every indication that we’ve seen in the first couple of practices, we have a lot of guys that are committed to a high standard. We obviously, like every team, have some question marks and challenges. Some players on the team need to take advantage of those opportunities created by those questions and challenges and how that all works out will go a long way in determining where this team can go.”

Alabama continues to work in preparation for its Sept. 3, kickoff against Kent State. The game will be broadcast by the SEC Network, with kickoff slated for 11:20 a.m.

    1. I agree. Both have similar abilities, I just think it is great to have such quality competition at the QB position. What a huge difference from the Shula era. Not slamming him or anything, Shula did recruit some really good players. Just not enough and he was slow to develop them as well as Saban has in his system. Both of these guys have stronger arms than the past few QBs at Bama, so the offense should have a larger field to work with this season.
