UAB Blazer fans are everything wrong with Alabama and America—obnoxious people who cannot have a conversation without tossing insults. Here is a selection of Blazer fan commentary posted on this website in the last week. Get ready though. If you don’t think UAB should have football, you are either a racist like George C. Wallace or the pure evil of Hitler. What fine examples of UAB students, alums and fans!

On to the comments: “Go to hell. You dont know anything about UAB.”

My response: I don’t? Really?

Another comment: “BULL SHIT!!!! UAB ATHLETICS MEANS SOMETHING TO THE CITY OF BIRMINGHAM! THE KNOW INCIDENT IS SHOWING HOW MUCH OF A DUMB ASS UAT IS!!!! UAB IS BETTER THAN UAT AT BASKETBALL WHAT WOULD BE THE POINT OF SHUTTING UAB BASKETBALL DOWN IF YOU DONT SHUT UAT’S BASKETBALL PROGRAM DOWN! UAB MADE IT TO THE ELITE 8 IN THE NIT UNLIKE BAMA HAVE NO POST SEASON PLAY! SURE BAMA WON A NATL CHAMPIONSHIP BUT THT DOESNT MEAN SHUT DOWN OUR ATHLETICS!! IDC IF WERE NTO THAT GREAT AT FOOTBALL OR OTHER SPORTS BUT ITS FUN TO GO TO GAMES AND I’M A BLAZER AND IM PROUD TO BE ONE!! SO WHO EVER WROTE THIS DO WHAT TOM SAYS AND ROT DIRTY IN HELL!!!!”

My response: Success is not only what happens on the field/court. Success is the bottom line. I’m not convinced that UAB can support any sport at this present time.

Steepler 2K made this very good point: “UAB Athletics have afforded hundreds, if not thousands, of athletes the opportunity of higher education and a bachelor’s degree. That is not a waste of time or money, it is doing exactly what the university should be doing: producing contributing members of society.”

My response: This is perhaps the best argument for athletics at UAB—it provides additional opportunities through these scholarships.

Steepler 2K continues: “I’m not sure why some people feel the need to say “shut it down” any time there is a disagreement like this between UAT and UAB. Several other states have multiple schools in one system at the D1 level. California, Texas, North Carolina, Wisconsin, and Tennessee, to mention a few. UAB should be allowed to do what every other autonomous university is allowed to do. Make its own decisions.”

My response: The reason UAB and UA have such a bad relationship has been and remains the animosity on Southside. You refer to the University as UAT—something sure to end any chance at rapprochement. As a history lesson, UAB began its football program because its administrators wanted to piss off members of the UA board. It was a juvenile power grab, and it has given UAB something its students and alums don’t want. UAB fans and alums wanted a great basketball program. How much better would basketball be if the university had invested its energy and some of those dollars in the basketball program? Now the interest in UAB basketball isn’t what it was during the 1980s. UAB wasted time, money and popularity on its foolish football fetish.

Kyle said: “Lack of tolerance is probably the biggest weakness of humankind. And, yours fits well with the mindset of George Wallace as he stood in front your oh-so-proud institution of “higher” learning to bar the way for the education of African-American students. Yep, that’s the answer: UAB, you are not ALLOWED to have collegiate athletics, because you aren’t US. Wow. Alabama really hasn’t changed much after all.”

My response: Yes, this is what UAB fans think. It gets worse.

Jeremy said: “Instead of this being called the capstone report, maybe you should re-title this blog the, ‘I’m so worried about other schools so I have to try to convince other people to think like I do in order to do away with them’. That sounds alot better for you. Or maybe the Hitler web site. That’s what you are acting like- ohhh, we don’t like them so UAT should just exterminate UAB. You are truly pathetic. Go Blazers! !”

My response: You read that correctly. This UAB fan compared me to Hitler because I called for an end to UAB’s athletic department.

UAB fans range from the sensible to the disgusting. However, the disgusting fans are the face of UAB athletics—these are the people who call talk radio, write letters to the editor and fill the Internet with such bile. As I said, I hold a degree from UAB, and I am ashamed that anyone like “Jeremy” or “Kyle” claims any association with that school or the University of Alabama System.

One clue for these people: just because someone disagrees with you, it doesn’t make them Hitler. You should’ve learned that your first day of college. Maybe UAB isn’t doing its job in the classrooms if you are the examples of today’s UAB.

  1. Correct BBS, those are the attendance figures for the last 2 UAB home games..Although I think the 58 is a tad bit inflated…pregnant women don’t count as two.

  2. I don’t think any UAB fan is concerned about what an Alabama fan thinks of us as fans or even our athletics.

    1) UAB has athletics now, and will for the foreseeable future irregardless of any drivel you post here

    2) UAB has beaten UAT in basically EVERY sport we’ve ever actually played in. UAT, however, has not beaten UAB in every sport.

Those 2 FACTS silence anything you could possibly have to say.

  3. CHANGING SUBJECT ALERT –
    THE ALIENS ARE COMING.
PICKING UP MEN WITH LARGE PECKERS.
I THINK Y’ALL WILL BE ALRIGHT.
I JUST WANTED TO SAY BYE.

  4. IF UAB SPORTS IS FINANCIAL SELF-SUSTAINING – LET IT BE.IF NOT – GONE BABY GONE.

  5. Cappy. Why do you do this ? Find me a fucking Conference for Basketball Only – that people would embrace as better than CUSA ?
Otherwise – you have to have Football to enable the Basketball. You know that.
That old shit pot has got to be stirred….

  6. UAB should have stayed in the Sun Belt. That conference has non-football members. However, there are 347 division 1 basketball programs and only 120 Division 1 football programs. You don’t have to have football to play basketball.

The problem is that UAB always considered itself bigger than it was.

We should just kill the entire athletic department now.

  7. For UAB’s athletic program to be so irrelevant, you sure have spent a lot of time writing about them. I think you must have a crush on Blaze.

  8. LET. IT. GO. UAB fans are justifiably angry because YOU seem to think it’s your responsibility to decide whether or not they have athletics. GET. OVER. YOURSELF.

  9. If UAB fans actually came out and supported one of their teams…the athletic department would be self-sustaining and this wouldn’t be an issue.

Lets just be honest here. UAB hasn’t had decent fan support since the Gene Bartow coaching days…and the only time UAB has a decent crowd at a basketball game now…its to see the visitors.(Memphis, North Carolina) That’s just a damn shame.

The football team has NEVER had a decent crowd. Ever watch one of those embarrassing UAB home games on tv?…where the entire stadium looks empty? Perhap they should play their home games at Lawson Field or that football field behind Parker High School…maybe then it would look like a decent crowd.

I’m a UAB employee, so I hear the whining about the University of Alabama all the time…and its sickening. Stop whining…and support the Blazers…hell, most of the time you can get free tickets on campus…and people STILL dont show up to support the team. Most UAB fans are at home watching the Bama game, hoping for a loss…or they are either somewhere cheering for the Barn.

Then they have the nerve to pretend that somehow the University of Alabama is holding them back. Yeah, right. 213 people at a home football game…and it’s “Bama’s fault”

Get out of here with that crap.
