I thought Alabama was the only school with sidewalk alums? It sure sounded like Pam Siddall was one of those sidewalk fans, but in an interesting twist. She cheers for Auburn. Based on the conversation today on Paul Finebaum’s Radio Network, the Birmingham News sports editor Tom Arenberg confirmed Pam Siddall as an Auburn fan that graduated from another school. Also on Tuesday’s Finebaum show, it was revealed information on what was apparently Siddall’s twitter page. According to twitter page, Name: Pam Siddall, Location Wichita, Kansas, Bio: SEC football, hip hop, mother of 2 wonderful girls, Auburn fan…War Eagle!

War Eagle indeed!

Arenberg’s appearance on Finebaum was also informative about the Birmingham News beat writer—Charles Goldberg. While Goldberg is not anywhere near the cheerleader of a Phillip Marshall, he has performed his fair share of puff pieces. During the days of Tommy Tuberville Bessemer Academy’s Harris Gaston, an unrated linebacker, committed to Auburn. Goldberg immediately declared this unrated linebacker to be “considered by some the top prep linebacker in the state.” (Link: http://blog.al.com/goldmine/2008/04/bessemer_academys_gaston_choos.html and I wrote about it on April 22, 2008.) In a year with state linebackers including Tana Patrick, Nico Johnson and D.T. Shackleford, this AISA linebacker was not considered by anyone the top linebacker in the state. Well anyone other than the player’s mother, Goldberg and a couple of Auburn message board posters. When he was rated by Rivals and Scout, he wasn’t the top linebacker in the state.

15 years covering the Auburn beat has left Goldberg susceptible to manipulation. That is the only explanation for any writing like that blog post.

A quick review of Goldberg’s work during the Auburn sociology scandal was less than impressive. During the time from July 14 through the release of the final Auburn review, Goldberg’s stories included pieces quoting Auburn officials but offering little in the way of new information. Most of the stories with Goldberg’s byline available via Newsbank were recapitulations of the New York Times’ reporting or denials of wrongdoing by Auburn officials. None of that can be described as reporting. Regurgitating? Yes.

In fairness to the Birmingham News, it appears that Jon Solomon did most of the legwork during July 2006 when the story broke. (But doesn’t that raise the question of why wasn’t Goldberg more involved in the story?) The Birmingham News ran 22 stories and commentaries that month on the issue with Kevin Scarbinsky penning a memorable column: “Latest news about Auburn just Plain stinks.” However, by the end of 2006 the newspaper ran a staff editorial praising Auburn. On November 8, 2006 the paper wrote the editorial “No special favors for AU athletes” and said, “The positive changes Auburn has made as a result of its investigation should help restore that integrity.”

Another note
The story about perceived bias in the Birmingham News has picked up steam. Sportzblitzlive.com (a radio and cable broadcast reaching over 500,000 households in Alabama) had me on for a segment Tuesday evening. The focus was the perceived bias of the state’s largest newspaper.

  1. In all fairness, we (Bama fans) weren’t too apt to covering the textbook scandal. I understand that it’s the B’ham news’ job to cover all sports related news in an unbiased fashion. However, you can’t change a writer’s bias. It’s just not going to happen. Let it roll off your back. Don’t let it agitate you.

  2. Which is exactly why I recommend buying the reliable and excellent Tuscaloosa News. Why pay Goldberg’s salary when you can pay Cecil Hurt’s?

  3. For never “gonna read or support” the Birmingham news, you sure love to sound off about them. I guess it is something to drive your website blogs.

Goldberg is an editorial writer for AU, do you actually know the definition of editorial?

Things are not going Alabamas way now, I agree, but you guys are gonna be back positively in the news.

  4. Actually, he is the beat writer who works on the editorial or content side of the business. A newspaper is divided into different departments usually along the lines of editorial (the writers), advertising (the salesmen), production (prepress and press), circulation (sales and delivery) and the business office (payroll, billing, etc.) Within editorial division you have commentary writers (opinion) and reporters. Often the line is blurred as reporters will often write commentary and columnists will often provide news content. However, most of the time there is a clear division between what is opinion and what is reporting. Scarbinsky is an opinion writer. Goldberg is supposed to be a reporter.

And BamaHate, it is the winter. What are we going to talk about? Basketball? LOL.

  5. You know.. If it werent for the Auburn paronoia, I wouldnt have a hard time agreeing with you cap. that and the fact that your last 5 or so articles are all about Auburns supposed reach of influence into the state media. What a joke. Are you saying that Cecil Hurt doesnt spin it in your teams favor ? Sure he does. Were is the outrage on our end ? There isnt any. I see your logic cap. You, much like your mentor Finebaum, are stirring the collective pot so you can get some of your own media exposure. Hey , there isnt anything wrong with that. Go for it. Just know going in that most people see that it is propaganda, spun to stir the pot. Its really kind of sad IMO, that you have stooped so low.

  6. Oh, and if the BHN were not broken, then it would be the only thing in Bham that isnt. I thank my lucky stars that I dont live in Jefferson county. That place is total anarchy.

  7. Good article Cap. Keep hammering away at the biased Bham News. I also find it interesting that both the aubie responses to this piece(Bamahate and Ballplay) refused to comment on the News new publisher, Pam Siddell, and her connection to Auburn. Or the fact that the News logo is on the scoreboard at Jordan-Hare Stadium.

  8. Since I live in Atlanta (and I do not subscribe to the AJC because they don’t cover much but Dawgs and Jackets) I can understand the aggravation – but – Alabama has had such a long list of achievements recently that WHO CARES?!

    Let them eat cake!

There are plenty of good places to find out information about our team, so I say ignor them. The media loves controversy, buy the way so if you comment on an article you don’t like, you are falling into their web.

  9. I suppose I’m lazy and do not want to search around on the Montgomery Advertiser’s site but do they have an Auburn homer writing there?

I know back in the day, NOTHING came out of Auburn without Charles Goldberg’s punk ass for us here in Birmingham. Just wondering if some of you central Alabama folks could help me out.

  10. Don’t care.
You must be an Alabama fan because it bothers you so much.
The only difference is you have a lame website to post it on.

  11. Shane,
You, like so many others who didn’t attend The University, are the stereotype that fans of other schools laugh at. You a a prime representative of the minions that the Alumni look down on and laugh at.

Shane, The University of Alabama just won a football championship and just brought in another highly ranked recruiting class. Is it really necessary for you, and so many other “fans”, to spend every waking hour trying to belittle another school and their athletic program? What happened to the days of having class? What happened to the belief that The University was ABOVE such pitiful acts?

Shane, get your head out of Paul’s ass, try to act like your parents raised you right, and quit worrying about the underlings.

    Becca

  12. Im still waiting on an answer. If you turds arent jealous of Auburn why worry about a newspaper being bias? lol This is hilarious.

  13. Becca, Shane didn’t write this piece…but I do agree with you about non graduates spouting off. As a an Alum, graduated in ’98, I too laugh at the ones who have such ‘great opinions’ about The University without ever stepping foot in any of its classrooms…Everyone wants to hitch their ride to winner though.

  14. All I got to say Bams – we are back, the news is covering Auburn becuse they are the hottest thing in the state. What has Bama done? nothing. We will beat the Bams next year and we will win the 2010 National Chapionship we just had a top recruting class, and all you Bams will be able to read all about it in the Birmingham news – War Damn Eagle – 2010 Ironbowl Champions

  15. ONLY IN BARNEY LAND IS 3-5 SEC RECORD, A NON-WINNING RECORD VS VANDY, TURNED IN FOR CHEATING AGAIN, IS BACK …AND BAMA WINS ANOTHER NC HEISMAN 6 ALL AMERICANS IS NOTHING

  16. Okay, my mistake about who wrote the article. My point, however, was that 9 out of 10 phone calls Shane makes to Paul’s show are about Auburn. The other phone call is usually an accusation that all Auburn fans can talk about is Alabama.

I just miss the days of ignoring Auburn and Tennessee. I know I’m asking too much and I know the sidewalk fans are very important to The University (somebody has to buy all the shirts at Wal-Mart) but they need to learn to carry themselves with a little dignity.

  17. LIKE A DOG THAT HAS BEEN BEAT TOO MUCH – BARN CAN’T BE BACK BECAUSE THEY NEVER WUZ…LOOK IT UP…

  18. BAMA WILL BEAT THE LIVING CRAP OUT OF AU 59-0 NOTHING…AND SABAN AT LSU SCORED MANY TIMES IN THE 40S AND 50S

  19. BAMA HAS 1 1 4 RECRUITING ,,,BARN HAS 11 IN AVG AND THEY ARE GOING TO DO WHAT THEY ALWAYS DO —- LAY AN EGG AND A FOT IN THE WIND – POOF …SEE 71 IRON BOWL 2000 SEC CG …14-0 START …5-0 START

  20. U STUPID IGNORANT SLUT EXPECTING JOURNALISTIC INTEGRITY IS JEALOUSY…LIKE A DOG THAT HAS BEEN BEAT TOO MUCH

  21. Hey Becca, I have been an Alabama Fan for a long time, and I can’t remember the days when we just ignored Tennessee or Auburn. Im not sure how old you are but the Tennessee game use to be as big if not bigger then the Auburn game. But the I could tell your not to mature (old) with the Wal-Mart comment.

  22. The “PamHam” News

And what a “HAM” she is!!!!

“PamHam” said in her now Defunct twitter page; SEC football, hip hop, mother of 2 wounderful girls, Auburn fan…War Eagle!

    “PamHam” just remember one thing.

YOUR NOT IN “KANSAS” ANYMORE !!!!!!

Hey SCARBY, how many more times are you going to compare GENE CHIZIK to a coach that’s won 2 National Championships and 3 Southeastern Conference Championships?
    Keep up the GOOD work!

I buy The “PamHam” News once a week (75 cents) only to find out where NOT too shop at that week.

    13 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS !!!!

    22 SOUTHEASTERN CONFERECE CHAMPIONSHIPS !!!!

    HEISMAN TROPHY WINNER !!!!

    ROLL TIDE CRIMSON BROTHERS !!!!!

  23. It is winter and much like a snowy winterland, Shane is mouthing off spreading his dander on everything on Finebaum. I wish he could talk about his own team, who by the way whom won the NC. You guys at the Capstone need to put your feet up and dont worry so much.

Recruiting is just that, a possibility of greatness and I am not a completely delusional AU fan, just sometimes a little delusional. The problem is stirring the pot constantly and bickering about everything that doesnt seem “fair” to you is delusional. It also decreases your own credibility to write a coherent and worthy article about your own team, Bama. If you are always trying to bash all things AU and dont see anything wrong at the Capstone; when everyone knows that there are player controversies, coach speeches which make no sense, and constant accusations of cheating, ultimately it is like the boy crying “wolf”. Cheating and NCAA secondary vioations abound at both schools. Complaining about the same old stuff makes people, even Bamers, ignore what you say and find the opinion less trustworthy when it is so one sided.

I believe Scarbinsky has written many pieces pro-Alabama and to say he has not ignores the obvious. He has written some tongue in cheek articles about Chizik and Saban comparisons. Chizik is not proven yet, however based on the talent he had, I think an 8-5 victory in the first year, suspension of 5 players at the beginning of the year, and an Outback bowl win is notable. How well did Saban do his first year? What bowl did he appear in? Also, with the recruits brought in, they may work out, they may not, however the talent level just expanded tremendously for Malzahn’s offense. You can call that offense whatever you like (high school, spread), however numbers and offensive yards do not lie. Additionally at Tulsa, the numbers were gawdy. Therefore, dont think that AU will remain a mediocre team, especially if the recruiting train keeps plowing down recruits.

Enjoy your wins, you deserve them but dont fulfill Barkley’s proclaimation that Bama fans are the worst winners in the world (I think he was talking about a sense of winning with humility), because that will make you look like sore winners and later sore losers. Cheers.

  24. Hey Pam. You stand your ground on that newspaper girl. Stick that knife deeper and deeper as far as it will go. We are in the turds heads like never before and its getting worse everyday. Old ugly Saban dont know how to deal with Chiz. Hes panicking and its funny as hell. Pay close attention to every recruit the next several months. This is gonna get very interesting. Go Tigers and War Damn Eagle

  25. IT IS GOING TO GET INTERESTING TO SEE IF THE AU AINTS GET THE DEATH PENALTY OR TRANSFER TO DIVISION 2

  26. MANDY – U STUPID IGNORANT SLUT – THE AU AINTS WENT 3-5 IN THE SEC AND THE WHOOP DE DOO DOO ABOUT IT IS ,,,ABHORENT TO CHAMPIONS AND LIKE A REPUGNIATES A HUMAN BEING LIKE A PEDOPHILE DOES……..

  27. The discussion of bias toward Auburn in this state really is laughable. I worked as a reporter for one of the state’s larger newspapers for several years. Do you guys have any clue how many Bama graduates occupy positions within the state’s media outlets? There is probably four Bama grads for every one Auburn grad. Just because the publisher of the News is an Auburn fan doesn’t automatically mean a bias against Alabama. If such were the case, then most Alabama media outlets would lean largely in Bama’s favor (which according to my Auburn friends they already do).

Finally, a big deal was made out of the fact that the News only sent two reporters to Pasadena. The economic downturn has brought about havoc on the newspaper industry as advertising dollars have dried up. Many newspapers, both large and small, have folded over the past couple of years. In order to stay afloat, many have been forced to trim travel budgets. In my opinion, this critcism is unfair.

    Dave – UA C/O ’03

  28. DAVE – SOUNDS GOOD … BUT IS NOT HOLDING WATER – BAMA WRITERS NO SIGN OF A LACK OF INTEGRITY – AU WRITERS PROVEN TO LACK JOURNALISTIC INTEGRITY

  29. Birmingham News has totally capitulated to Auburn. It has done everything possible, from painting Chizik as Lord Wellington defeating Saban as Napoleon on its al.com. to comparing Chizik with Saban and Auburn with Alabama in everything, except Auburn does it better. You have to wonder about a newspaper that seeks to alienate the majority of its readers.

  30. Crimson who dat…

I have worked with some of these guys and a lack of journalistic integrity can be exhibited by graduates of both schools…or any other school for that matter. This really is much-a-do about nothing, but it has been stirred to a fever pitch by Finebaum. Talk about a guy who lacks journalistic integrity!! His schtick became old long ago and it is comical that anyone is still buying it. Even worse, we are a month removed from a National Championship and all we can find to talk about is the publisher of the Birmingham News. Sad indeed.

    Dave UA C/O ’03

  31. Guys,
To suggest that the Birmingham News has an Auburn bias because of newly hired Publisher Pam Siddall is laughable. Your suggestion is that the slant is because of her and your evidence is tears old. You do realize Siddall just took over this position less than a month ago.
Having worked for Pam in the past, I can assure you that the school that she pulls for has no bearing on the news room. She is a numbers person and has always been known as a Publisher that does not meddle in news and allows her Editor to dictate the direction of the newsroom. She cannot be blamed for the reason only 2 writers were sent to Pasadena, but it does not surprise me that they are sharing resources for the KY-UA BB coverage.
I say this as a graduate of the University of Alabama with a degree in journalism and a Tide Pride member.

  32. mandy, what exactly does the 2009 BCS National Champion, SEC Champion, most decorated team in NCAA history team have to be jealous over a 3-5 SEC record awburm?

I have to agree with you there AU. You ARE Back. Back behind Troy and soon to be UAB.
(On a personal note,) It must really suck to be outdine on the field by Troy 2 years in a row.

  35. BAMAHATE : Your so spot on ! Nothing seems to be going our way.Who are you,Rumplestiltskin ? Wake up little Suzie. The business of Alabama Football can be judged by the haters on blogs and forums.Business is good !

  36. Old Lefty, nobody is using the OLD evidence to suggest a slant by the new publisher. However, it is simply an interesting revelation. I’ve thought the News biased or stupid when it defended Shula and Gottfried and now I think the “agenda” of the News is to irritate Alabama fans who seem to respond to irritation by increasing traffic to al.com.

  37. I’m curious if her reputation as a numbers person is a good or bad thing for the newsroom? I know there is the constant/eternal war between advertising and editorial, but my experience has been the best publishers care and spend time on the content side of things too.

  38. Indeed! You are a paranoid twit and no one really gives a phuck what you think. Maybe now a newspaper in this state can look into the Tide and their blantant coruption over the last three years. That includes our czar of corruption MIKE SLIVE! This cheating bastard has cast a blind eye towards Tuscaloser ever since he arrived. Despite NUMBEROUS REPORTED violations by member SEC schools Mr. Mike Slime never past the reports to the NCAA.
I can’t wait to see Bama’s Head stuck to a sharpe stick.

  39. Capstonereport…

My experience has been that most publishers look to the numbers far more than headlines and column inches. Given the slim profits that many newspapers are earning these days, it is even more true than ever before. For the most part, they leave the headlines and the bylines to the editors.

    Dave – UA C/O ’03

  40. U STUPID IGNORANT SLUT ….BAMA – CLEAN AS WHISTLE…BARN – DIRTY AS DOO DOO – DYE DAZE AGAIN…SEE MISS ST ASST COACH ON NEWTON’S DAD SHAKEDOWNS

  41. Having been an editor, I spent more time on numbers than bylines too. And other projects from books to posters to whatever to generate increased revenue. Of course, I had a publisher who counted bylines in his spreadsheets. (I guess being an editorial guy made giving that up hard to do? But having someone from the news side of the business provided me with immense freedom and autonomy.)

  42. Capstonereport,
I think you make a good point about journalism in general about publishers that worry about the numbers more than the content. “Do the numbers influence the content?” Valid question.
I apologize for implying that this article links Siddall to past accusations. I guess after listening to “someone” on Finebaum Wed. use this information and intertwine it with past revelations I made my own journalistic error by garbling stories together to form my own opinion.
In defense of Siddall, her strength, background and education is all about numbers and I think it is wise for any publisher to stick to what they know. I would agree that most great publishers from the past were content people. Unfortunately, the days that newspapers controlled all the advertising budgets are over and publishers that are not strong on the business side are rendered useless. I like to compare it to the evolution of the athletic director in college sports. Heck, even the ADs in high schools are becoming a separate job no longer given to the head coach to supplement and legitimize their pay.

  43. January 4th, 2010 was her FIRST DAY… So saying the News has been biased for a long time really means very little…

  44. CRIMSON WHO DAT HAMMAH,
Do you actually look at what you post before you send it, and say yea, that looks good? Man, you make yourself look like a freakin moron.

  45. UIDIOT – U STUPID IGNORANT JEAULOUS SLUT – THE HAMMAH KICKED UR BUTT AND U LIKED IT

  47. Mandy is more like MAN-dy right? She has a vagina, but brings new meaning to the phrase “foreign object”.

Let me clear some things up for the petulent barnies, we Alabama fans only sling mud at aubie because at least 10 of you losers will snap to attention and try to spin it. It is truly funny to watch you squirm and angrily respond to everything we say. Who can blame you, your school has no street cred, and has about as much chance of winning a NC as Burt Reynolds does of becoming the first Chinese astronaut. When your clame to fame is beating Bama, you’re a 2nd tier team with ambition, not a powerhouse who stumbles from time to time but recovers. So let your graduates continue to measure the methane levels of cowfarts and holler “wo-dam-eguh”. The fact is even when you cheat, you can’t surpass Alabama in college football. Go on, let the iron bowl be the center of your existance, after all, Bama is the measurig stick for all of aubie’s seasons.

  48. YUP – MY POSTS ARE 90% IN DIRECT RESPONSE TO AN AU FLAMER – I RARELY HAVE AN ORIGINAL THOUGHT

  50. Dave & oldlefty12 & Bamahater,

Don’t you just love those three guys trying to indoctrinate capstonereport readers with their TWISTED “RATIONALIZATION” (AUBIE PROPAGANDA) that the “Pam Ham” News and other Media outlets in the state have really been PRO Bama. Yeah, I bet “PamHam” is just going to sit in her office all day counting money! (LOL)

This is the BARNER machine at work here folks.

Well that “SHANE” doesn’t work with me!

The “PamHam” News and ABC 33/40 are the Biggest Haters of ALABAMA FOOTBALL and it’s fans in the ENTIRE STATE OF ALABAMA.

8 times out of 10 those two media outlets have a slant or negative tone towards Alabama Football and it’s fans. It’s been that way for many years.

    BamaHater,

And what a JOKE you are! Quoting Charles Bakley about what he thinks of ALABAMA fans? Couldn’t you come up with someone that doesn’t get charged with DUI and has a HOOKER’S face in his lap and was a dead beat GAMBLER?

    Oldlefty12,

I don’t belive you ever graduadeted from the University of Alabama. The Cow College people are the worlds worst to “POSE” (aka “POSER”) ON THE FINEBAUM NETWORK and the Capstonereport.

If you want to say you were a graduate of the University of Alabama, give your full name where it can be verified!

I buy the “PamHam” News once a week (75 cents) only to find out where not to shop at. I never watch ABC 33/40!!!!

    Mandy,

I wish you would decide who you want to be. On the FINEBAUM NETWORK you go by “TAMMY”, on the TIGER call in show you go by “CATHY”, on the capstonereport you go by “Mandy”.

  54. Do you need directions to auburn ballsack?

Hitch a ride with trooper and luper in the pooper scooper(limo). Maybe your wife/sister tammy is headed to the “village”.

  55. Big red a-hole. I was referng to your smarter brother HAMMAH. But, if you like , I can say that somewhere a village is looking for a couple of idiots. You and dummy up there ^^^^^^^. And dont be a total classless doosh. No need to bring in family members. Oh, nevermind, I forgot I brought your brother in on it.

You are a foul mouth doosh. That is all.

  57. NEW NCAA RULE: RECENTLY AVAILABLE AINTS BAGS ARE MANDATORY FOR BARNERS AT LEAST UNTIL AU ATTAINS A WINNING RECORD VS VANDY AT THAT TIME THE ISSUE WILL BE READDRESSED. BYLAW 2009.NC.UACT …i like it

  58. First of all it’s douche, not doosh (I mailed some Summer’s Eve to julia). Second, HAMMAH can be my bro anytime. The fact that you didn’t deny that Tammy is your sister, you didn’t deny that you were married to her is priceless. Are you Charles from Realtown? I’m just curious. But really, don’t try to play the “smartass game” with me when your IQ is still in single digits. Get back to me when you get promoted to moron by the “auburn inbred family”

  59. HEY BRO, DITTO ON EVERY POINT!!!
    ROLL TIDE ROLL
    ***YESTERDAY(NC’S)***
    *** TODAY(NC)******
    AND TOMORROW(PRESEASON #1)****

  60. I spell it “doosh” on purpose , you doosh. Its kind of like a trademark of the Indians. But, thats o.k., we can agree to disagree on that one. Even though your wrong.

You two are pitiful. Your like the older brother of the HAMMAH ,who thinks that he has some sort of clout, and will whoop anyone who messes with his retarded little brother. Truth is . HAMMAH is probably smarter than you. Not to mention that the Indian has chunks of corn in his crap meaner that the two of you combined.

Are you the inbred Bama fan that tattood an “A” on his one year old daughters butt that I heard about on the radio the other day ? You seem to fit the profile.

  61. NON BAMA GRADS AND NON AU GRADS CHOOSE BAMA 100000000 TO 0 – NO WONDER THE STANDS ARE HALF EMPTY EXCEPT FOR THE IRON BOWL….AND SMART ENOUGH TO HATE AU CHEATING LOSERS AS MUCH AS THEY DO PEDOPHILES

  62. Ballsack idiot strikes with vengence don’t he. I’m wrong about what? The spelling of a simple word. So far I’ve been right on several points for you though. 1) You did’nt deny tammy. 2) You are a pedophile. 3) You aren’t smart enough to play this game with me. 4) You are a dumbass aubie.

Having established all of the above lets move on to some shockingly interesting ballsack tidbits.

Why were you digging through your shit to find “mean corn”? Furthermore, how did the corn get there, and why is it in “chunks”, did a piece break off when tammy shoved it in your ass?

I don’t have a daughter, but if I did, I’d keep her the hell away from drooling degenerates like yourself.

HAMMAH may be smarter than I am, it’s hard to say, but both of us have you beat by a hundred miles.

As far as “clout”, and being mean goes, I have more clout in my fingernail clippings than you do in your whole body, and I’m not the guy a short fat mouthbreather like you wants to piss off. That short-man syndrome that oozes through even your keyboard can get you hurt in the wrong environment. Fortunately I have grown more tolerant of ignorance as I have gotten older. And beating up retards like you is in poor taste because you never learn the lesson, you just keep coming back for more even though you know you’ll lose, kinda like aubie.
