McCarron and Sims Throw for Three Touchdowns Each
The Alabama Crimson Tide scrimmaged for the first time this spring Saturday afternoon for just over two hours in Bryant-Denny Stadium. The scrimmage portion of the day included regular 11-on-11, situational drills, red area and 2-minute.

“I thought we did a really good job offensively,” head coach Nick Saban said. “I was really pleased with the quarterback play. Those guys played with a lot of poise, did a good job of throwing the ball, made a couple errors, had some drops, and threw a couple interceptions I’m sure we’d like to have back. Overall, I thought they managed the game well and their leadership was good.”

Phillip Sims and A.J. McCarron both threw for three touchdowns and received the majority of the work at quarterback, splitting time equally with the first and second offenses. Sims was 20-of-30 for 225 yards and three touchdowns with two interceptions while McCarron was 18-of-33 for 189 yards with three scores and one pick.

Kenny Bell, Marquis Maze, Darius Hanks and DeAndrew White all had 60-plus yards to lead the receivers. Bell and Maze had two touchdowns apiece.

“We moved the ball effectively offensively,” Saban said. “We did a nice job on the offensive line; did a nice job running the ball as well. Both backs, Trent and Eddie, did a nice job and made some big plays out there offensively. I was really pleased with the way we played offensively.”

Leading the ground game was Eddie Lacy, who carried 10 times for 92 yards with three touchdowns including a 45-yarder. Trent Richardson ran five times for 40 yards and also added two catches for 25 yards with one touchdown.

Linebacker C.J. Mosley was the top tackler with six stops and one interception. Nico Johnson, DeQuan Menzie and Trey DePriest had five tackles each. Dont’a Hightower had a scrimmage-high two sacks and four total tackles. Mosley, Courtney Upshaw, John Fulton and Vinnie Sunseri each had an interception.

“Even though there were good things on defense, I think the one glaring thing is we didn’t tackle as well as we need to,” Saban said. “We didn’t tackle, we didn’t clean up, we didn’t get people around the ball and running to the ball to be the kind of aggressive defense that we’ve been in the past.”

The Crimson Tide will return to the practice field Monday afternoon at 3:30 p.m.
