Colin Peek Nominated for Wuerffel Trophy

H ere is the official release:

TUSCALOOSA – Alabama senior tight end Colin Peek is among 70 college football players nominated for the 2009 Wuerffel Trophy, the All Sports Association of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., announced Friday.

Peek is one of 10 SEC players nominated for this year’s award, which is given annually to the Football Bowl Subdivision player that best combines exemplary community service, with academic and athletic achievement.

“This year’s Wuerffel Trophy nomination class is awesome,” All Sports Association President Robert McEachern said. “We received the most nominations ever and believe this shows the tremendous growth of the Wuerffel Trophy nationally. A large majority of the nation’s colleges and universities, as well as every conference in the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision is represented. The All Sports Association is extremely proud of all of these young men and their accomplishments.”

Peek sports a 3.79 grade point average in finance and is set to graduate in December. The senior has started all eight games this season and has 19 catches for 213 yards (11.2 yards per catch) and one touchdown. He is also an outstanding blocker and has paved the way for Mark Ingram’s SEC-leading 125.5 rushing yards per game this season.

He was a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Honor Roll in 2006, 2007 and 2008 at Georgia Tech. Once Peek transferred to Alabama, he was honored on Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll in 2009. He was named to the ACC’s All-Academic Football team at tight end in 2008 and is a member of Sigma Alpha Lambda and Golden Key. Peek was also honored with the Outstanding Undergraduate Award in Finance and named to the Dean’s List at Georgia Tech (2006, 2007 and 2008) and Alabama (2009).

The 2009 Wuerffel Trophy winner will be formally announced on Tuesday, December 8, 2009. The presentation of the 2009 Wuerffel Trophy will be at the All Sports Association’s 41st Annual Awards Dinner on February 19, 2010, in Fort Walton Beach, Fla.
