Ole Miss not ready for Top 5

Game recap by the AP: Mississippi wasn’t ready for the Top 5 — or South Carolina’s defense. Star passer Jevan Snead was hounded all game and the fourth-ranked Rebels never got in gear, losing to South Carolina 16-10 Thursday night.

South Carolina (3-1, 1-1 Southeastern Conference) had been 1-31 all-time against Top 5 foes, but left Williams-Brice Stadium with the biggest win of coach Steve Spurrier’s five seasons.

Spencer Lanning kicked three field goals and fullback Patrick DiMarco a key 2-yard TD catch for the Gamecocks.

Ole Miss (2-1, 0-1) had one last chance at a go-ahead TD that would’ve extended its eight-game winning streak. But Snead was sacked by Cliff Matthews, then had a fourth-down pass knocked away by Darian Stewart. (read entire story embedded in this post.)

    Godd ol’ predictable Houston Nutt.
When there is a game out there that should be easy to manage he always finds a way to sntch defeat from the jaws of victory.

    another media darling goes down.

let’s be clear about something here, ole piss NEVER WAS a top five team. they got that ranking on the momentum from beating the snot out of an over-rated texas tech team from an over-rated big twelve conference last season.

i actually heard the espn talking heads opine that the rebels were beaten by a legitimate top 15 team in s. carolina!

this is the same kind of promotional crapola we bitched about bristol doing with the big (can’t count to eleven) ten.

in reality, these were two traditional middle-of-the-road to lower eshelon sec teams.

    and they played like it.

which is why they were playing on thursday night instead of saturday.

(on a positive note, it was good to see the south carolina fans show up and see something positive. how many times have you seen these guys show up to a big game like this and their team didn’t? they were doing blackouts before they were “cool”. —–insert mental jab at georgia here—– i’ve always thought the gamecock fan base has the patience of job)

if spurrier could recruit a legitimate qb to columbia this would have been a blowout.

Thank goodness its over. I knew it was impossible for them to win the West, much less the SEC. They are O.K., thats all. Not world beaters. S.C. has to be the most inconsistent team in the SEC. Spurrier is no longer feared.

That little running back from Ole Miss is pretty good. Greg Hardy is an animal.

I don’t know if Ole Miss plays Wake this year or not Floridian, but I am certain that they are just as good as the Gators again.

Anyone seen Tim Brando this morning? I hope he’s not choking on that Crow.

I still think Ole Miss has a chance to have a really good season, and maybe even contend for the West. Houston Nutt is famous for looking horrible early in the season. When he won the West in 06 at Ark, he got destroyed by USC 50-14 and needed a last second field goal just to beat Vandy. All he did from that pt forward was go 7-1 in the SEC.

Contrary to what finebammer says, Ole Miss did a lot more last year than beat the snot out of T Tech. They beat Fla in the swamp, came within a whisker of beating Bama in Tuscaloosa, beat LSU by 3 tds in Baton Rouge, and won their last 6 games in a row. With the exception of a good o-lineman, that entire offense is back. No doubt, they looked pathetic against SC, (Earth to Houston Nutt-put McCluster at tailback in the 1st quarter not the 4th), but it’s pretty foolish to judge a team by one game early in the season especially if you’ve already seen the entire team play several games before. Bama certainly shouldn’t have been judged by its early season performance against Tulane last year when it put up a whopping 180 yds of offense. If any of you want to start laying odds against Ole Miss for the rest of the season based solely on that game, give me a call because I’ll take some of that action anytime.

P.S. I never thought Ole Miss was a top 5 team either. I do think their schedule plays out very well for them which is why I still give them a shot at the West. Obviously, they would now have to beat Bama in Oxford in a couple of weeks. Should be fun.

“Contrary to what finebammer says, Ole Miss did a lot more last year than beat the snot out of T Tech.”

julio, i made no comment on what ole piss did as a whole last year and had they not beaten tech in the bowl game all those accomplishments you meticulously listed would have been for naught as they wouldn’t have been in the top twenty.

admit something to me julio. how many times since alabama beat virginia tech have you heard those in your circle of auburn friends claim tech was “over-rated”?

did you make that same argument to them???

“If any of you want to start laying odds against Ole Miss for the rest of the season based solely on that game, give me a call because I’ll take some of that action anytime.”

tell you what, julio, based on what i saw thursday, i’ll bet you ole piss and nutts doesn’t win the west this season.

answer the call, julio. make it light on yourself.

Little touchy there, ain’t ya finebammer? I’m well aware that you made no comment on Ole Miss’s season as a whole, and that was exactly the point I was making about how ignorant your statement was. You said that Ole Miss’s top 5 ranking was based solely on the T Tech win, i.e “they got that ranking on the momentum from beating the snot out of an over-rated texas tech team.” You truly think the fact Ole Miss beat Fla in the swamp, came within a whisker of beating Bama in Tuscaloosa, beat LSU by 3 tds in Baton Rouge, and won their last 6 games in a row had nothing to do with their top 5 ranking???????? If so, you know as much about college fb as the pencil necked talk show host whose name you try to emulate.

Where in my post did I bet that Ole Miss would win the west?? I said they had a chance, I didn’t predict them to win it. I said I’ll take bets with anyone who wants to base Ole Miss for the rest of the season on the SC game (which as you said, showed they are mid or even a lower tier SEC team). If that’s the case, then Ole Miss should be no more than a 3 pt favorite over Vandy; probably a pick’em or slight dog to Ark; a 3 td dog to Bama; a td dog to Auburn; even or slight (2 pts) favorite over Tenn; 2 td dog to LSU; and a pick’em or slight dog to Miss State. See, that’s putting your money where your mouth is. Now quick, respond with something snappy like calling them “ole piss” again. That’ll mask the fact that you just showed everyone you don’t know what you’re talking about.

    Reality

I’ll lay a hundred to one that I know who won’t win the west. The inbred cattle humpers of lee county. How much can i put your ignorant ass down for julio? Now get off big brothers site and go to your schools site. It won’t help aub over here obsessing about a true contender, you just worry about your team that will soon be exposed the pretenders. aub 6 and 6 mark it down.

    little scared there, julio??

    afraid of your own words???

funny, you list out all the reasons ole piss was ranked top 5 and then claim you never thought they were top 5 either.

fact is they lose that bowl game and they’re not top 5 or ten for that matter. you rail on about the win over florida but that was a game florida knew they were supposed to win.

it’s called an upset for a reason. it was a FLUKE.

kind of like you living up to a challenge you issued:

“If any of you want to start laying odds against Ole Miss for the rest of the season based solely on that game, give me a call because I’ll take some of that action anytime.”

    i’m still waiting, julio.

(and by the way, don’t quote betting odds to me when trying to make an argument about teams and rankings. they have nothing to do with each other. betting odds are set to get bettors to lay equal amounts of money on both teams. that’s why the line changes during the course of the week. if too many people bet one team, the line changes. i hear this from illiterates all the time. ‘wow, vegas really knew what they were talking about’ no they didn’t. nor do they care. all they’re after is the sugar. using betting odds to gauge a team’s strength or justify ranking is intellectually dishonest. something you should be quite familiar with julio)

Finebammer, just a couple of questions:

    1. What in the #$@% are you waiting for? Are you saying that you do want to bet on some Ole Miss games with me based soley on their performance in the SC game?? If so and you’re truly basing Ole Miss on nothing but the SC game, then the spoint spreads I listed are legitimate. You name the bet on those spreads and i’ll take it.

    2. Where in the $#!@ did you get that I was basing rankings on pt spreads? You called Ole Miss a mid to lower tier SEC team. The odds I listed reflect a mid to lower tier SEC team. Rankings in the polls was not even remotely referenced. Do you have some type of reading comprehension disability?
