The Wall Street Journal explored the reasons why soccer fans stand and most American fans like to sit. According to the historians quoted in the article, It goes back to “the middle ages, when the nobility sat and the common plebs stood,” says Rod Sheard, senior principle of the leading sports architecture firm Populous and designer of the Emirates. “All of America is nobility. Everyone thinks they’re king in America.”

On message boards, you’ll often see discussions between fans about complacency among fans who just sit in their seats instead of “doing their part.” While the Journal article dealt with professional events, having heard such discussions among Alabama fans in the past, made the topic interesting.

What do you do and why?

  1. When I was younger, I stood all the way. But now that I’m a little older, there’s nothing more irritating than someone standing three rows down from me for no reason, causing a domino effect. At certain points in the game, it’s obvious that it’s time to stand. But when it’s 1st and 10 from your own 32 in the 2nd quarter against Western Kentucky, do us all a favor and sit a spell, would ya?

  2. I like to do both, but I’d prefer it if everyone stood. I feel like that makes people louder and makes them pay better attention. Neyland definitely needs an upgrade in the decibel department, and it’s not near as loud as it was 8-10 years ago.

I don’t feel bad about the domino effect, I actually love it when that happens.

  3. I stand most of the time. It is easier to get loud while you are standing. But I do set down when I should. But what I can’t stand are the old folks that sit on their hands except when they are sitting and looking through binoculars with a radio in their ear. Maybe they should just watch it on TV or something. Some get mad if people are standing in front of them. I have been to Bryant-Denny when the crowd was dead, and when it was electric. (2005 Florida) I much prefer the loud stadium over the dead one. I wish it could be like that at every home game. It would then truly be a home field advantage.

  4. How can anyone stand at an Alabama game is my question? I don’t even set at half-time, even though I’m not in the stands then. lol

  5. I’m sort of like IntheKnow, I stood all game when i was younger, and after graduating and moving from the Student Section to the “real Seats”, i couldn’t understand why everyone was sitting all the time? Now i sit when Bama’s on offense and stand when the defense is on the field.
I sometimes wonder if i’ve been corrupted by those around me, or if it’s aproduct of aging?

Yes, there are still octogenarians who want everyone around them to sit so they can see, but they’ll just have to get over it.

  6. What a crock of s–t that hypothesis was. People sit because there are seats and it’s more comfortable. Has not a damn thing to do with ancient social status. I sit generally, but stand and cheer for everything that warrants it. Have since little league and always will. For those idiots directly in front of me that try to stand for the whole damn game and keep me from seeing what I paid money to see – I’ll ask you nicely to sit down the first time, but don’t make me have to do it again!
