It is official: Alabama signs 25

It is official. The ink is dry and Alabama landed another top recruiting class. Here is the official information from UA:

TUSCALOOSA — University of Alabama head football coach Nick Saban announced today that 25 student-athletes have signed national letters of intent to play football with the Crimson Tide, joining four players who enrolled at the Capstone in January and will compete in spring practice later this semester.

The 29 total players come from seven states – Alabama (12), Georgia (6), Louisiana (3), Mississippi (3), Florida (3), Ohio (1) and South Carolina (1).

“In terms of needs, I thought it was really important that we get some big guys with long arms that could play on the edges on the offensive line,” Alabama head coach Nick Saban said on Wednesday. “I think we were able to solve that. I also think there are skill players on offense who could make explosive plays and obviously getting a couple of runners like Trent Richardson, who is a great player, as well as some receivers and skill guys to go with that and to be able to attract one of the top quarterbacks in the country. I think all of those things will help us develop and sort of replace some the guys we lost on offense this year, which will be a real key to building our offense to what we need it to be in the future.”

As listed by position, the Crimson Tide add to their roster seven defensive linemen, five offensive linemen, four linebackers, four wide receivers, four running backs, two defensive backs, one quarterback, one linebacker-defensive lineman and one offensive lineman-defensive lineman – though several of the players played multiple positions in high school and could move to other positions once they arrive on campus.

“Defensively, we got some good front seven players, some defensive linemen,” Saban said. “We only got a couple of defensive backs, if there was one area where we would have liked to have taken another guy or two, that might have been it, but we are pleased with the guys that we were able to attract. I think the quality of linemen in this class, and I think there are 12 or 13 true linemen, big guys, is probably important to the future of the program. We have never had the numbers in the offensive line that we need to have since we’ve been here, in terms of depth and quality. So, that is something that we were able to do in this class.

Four players – offensive linemen James Carpenter and Chance Warmack along with defensive lineman Kerry Murphy and running back Jermaine Preyear – are already attending classes at the University. They all enrolled in January, began taking classes for the spring 2009 semester and will be able to participate in Alabama’s spring football practices. The other 25 players signed national letters of intent today.
