SBC Elites congratulate each other for appropriate and exciting conduct!
MOSCOW—An internal committee of the Politburo declared other members of the Politburo acted honorably and above reproach when they awarded a $1 million severance package to another Politburo member.
“It was all in the best interest of the people,” said one Politburo member. “The people would be very proud if they could understand why this was done. Of course, they’ll just have to take our word for it.”
So, here is their word for us–the little people.
Everything is fine at LifeWay, according to its trustees. Just trust the trustees. That secret $1 million severance package that only one trustee knew about for the failed, former CEO—that’s in the past. And just because that one trustee violated SBC bylaws in being a trustee while receiving (direct or indirect) benefits that’s FINE! See, it didn’t violate LifeWay bylaws.
You can’t make this stuff up folks.
Go read Pravda, err, I mean the Baptist Press report. The self-congratulating tone and the lack of awareness would be comical were it not for the fact that these SBC entities are your entities.
Seriously, this is the lame defense of Scroggins conduct of publishing a book while a trustee.
According to Pravada, BP, “The committee also reported that Lifeway’s decision to publish Scroggins is not in violation of Lifeway’s bylaws as a conflict of interest. The bylaws specifically allow for a trustee to enter into a publishing agreement with Lifeway. In addition, the special audit committee noted that all advance monies and royalties from Scroggins’ books going back to 2015 have gone to his church and not to him personally.”
And what about the SBC Bylaws?
Don’t they trump LifeWay bylaws? And the SBC bylaw is explicit in forbidding this type of conduct.
SBC Bylaw Article 15(F) forbids this type of conduct. The Bylaw states, “No person and no person’s spouse shall be eligible to serve on the board of any one of the above entities (1) from which the person receives, directly or indirectly, any form of payment or financial benefit except for reimbursements for reasonable and authorized expenses incurred in the performance of the duties of a trustee, or, (2) which provides funds for which he/she has a duty of administration. When such conditions become applicable, that person or that person’s spouse shall be considered as having resigned and such vacancy shall be filled in accordance with established Convention procedure.”
Also, the fact that Scroggins’ church received the money shouldn’t matter at all.
Does Scroggins get paid by that church? That looks an awful lot like an indirect benefit.
Of course, we’d need to look at the church financial statements and Scroggins’ bank records to know how much he was paid and if he received any additional monies in the years LifeWay sent money to his church.
Hey, maybe Democrats in Congress or the mainstream press or a state attorney general could look into this questionable conduct?
Then we might get answers.
Unfortunately, the people of the SBC will never get a straight answer from SBC Elites. They are too busy congratulating each other for being awesome.
I don’t mind a nice retirement party watch. One could even purchase a brand new Platinum Rolex for $60,000. I might raise an eyebrow, but the man did work there for fifteen years. Give him one or two month’s salary even. Frankly, a $250,000 severance package would be considered extravagant among 99% of the people in our pews using Lifeway Sunday School materials each week. But one million dollars? What world are they living in at Lifeway that they felt this was an acceptable use of Miss Mildred’s social security tithe at every Southern Baptist Church on the corner of First and Main all across America? Their internal audit says this is okay. Southern Baptists need to let them know that this is not okay at all.
