SOFTBALL: Grantham’s walk-off homer seals Super Regional Game 1

  • by

Alabama-softball-logoThe future of Alabama softball continues to appear very bright. In its longest Super Regional game ever, Alabama took a 6-5 12-inning marathon win over Nebraska (44-17) with freshman Peyton Grantham’s walk-off home run in the bottom of the 12th.

After falling behind 4-0 after just two innings, the Tide would play catch up the remainder of the contest. Starter Jaclyn Traina would be peppered by the Cornhuskers for five runs off eight hits in the opening four innings before being replaced by another freshman, Sidney Littlejohn.

Bama would chip away at the deficit in the third, scoring Molly Fichtner and Leona Lafaele, but the Cornhuskers would score again in the next inning making the deficit 5-2. And that’s as far as Nebraska would get.

After closing the deficit to 5-4, freshman Marisa Runyon’s home run tied the game in the bottom of the seventh, forcing extra innings. And extra innings did we get.

Some unbelievable field play from both teams left the score tied 5-5 for the next five innings, until the freshman Grantham from Daphne, AL sent everyone home with the most important homerun of her young Bama career.

Littlejohn limited Nebraska to just three hits and no runs her eight innings of relief starter of Jaclyn Traina. Nebraska’s Emily Lockman (20-5) gave up the solo shot after holding the Tide at bay from the sixth inning.

The Crimson Tide (48-11) will now face Nebraska again this evening at 5:00pm CTin the second game of the Super Regional series. It will be televised on ESPNU. If a third game is needed, it will start at 8 p.m. CT on ESPN.
