Allstate Sugar Bowl: Alabama plays Oklahoma
The Alabama Crimson Tide will face the Oklahoma Sooners in the 80th Allstate Sugar Bowl on Thursday, January 2, 2014, at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, La. The game will be televised by ESPN and will kick off at 7:30 p.m. (CST).

“We are excited and proud to be named to play in this year’s Sugar Bowl against the University of Oklahoma,” said Bill Battle, University of Alabama Director of Athletics. “These are two great universities with great academic and football traditions. The history of our previous games against each other has been very competitive and exciting. Our fans love New Orleans, and this is especially meaningful to me, as I have degrees from both institutions (bachelor’s degree from Alabama, master’s degree from Oklahoma).”

Alabama (11-1 overall) and Oklahoma (10-2) have met four times in their storied histories, but will be meeting for the first time since 2003. Oklahoma owns a 2-1-1 series lead over the Crimson Tide with two of the games taking place in the postseason.

The teams first met in the 1963 Orange Bowl when the Crimson Tide won a memorable 17-0 verdict over the Sooners in Miami, Fla. The squads matched up again following the 1970 season and battled to a 24-24 tie in the 1970 Bluebonnet Bowl game at the Astrodome in Houston, Texas. Alabama and Oklahoma met in regular season contests in 2002 (a 37-27 Oklahoma win at Norman, Okla.) and 2003 (a 20-13 Oklahoma victory at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa).

The Crimson Tide will be making a record 14th appearance in the Sugar Bowl. Alabama owns the Sugar Bowl record with eight wins in the game. The last Sugar Bowl appearance for the Tide was following the 2008 season when Alabama took on Utah. However, Alabama was hosted by the Allstate Sugar Bowl for the 2012 Allstate BCS National Championship Game, when the Crimson Tide knocked off LSU, 21-0, for Alabama’s 14th national title. The Crimson Tide also secured national championships with wins in the Sugar Bowl in 1962, 1979, 1980 and 1993.

“It is going to be exciting for us to go to New Orleans and play in another BCS bowl game,” said Crimson Tide senior linebacker C.J. Mosley. “I grew up in Mobile so it will be great to play my final game at Alabama in the Sugar Bowl, so close to my friends and family. That being said, we are going there to win a football game and that has to be our mindset. I know we are looking forward to the challenge.”

“I know Alabama and the Sugar Bowl have a rich tradition together, and we are thrilled to have the opportunity to play such a tremendous program like the University of Oklahoma,” said Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron. “The Sugar Bowl gives us a chance to play our final game together on one of the grandest stages college football has to offer.”

The Crimson Tide is making its sixth BCS bowl appearance and fifth in the last six seasons under Saban. The Crimson Tide also played in the 2009 Sugar Bowl (2008 season – a 31-17 loss to Utah), the 2010 BCS National Championship Game (2009 season – a 37-21 victory over Texas), the 2012 BCS National Championship Game (2011 season – a 21-0 victory over LSU), and the 2013 BCS National Championship Game (2012 season – a 42-14 victory over Notre Dame). Alabama also appeared in the 2000 Orange Bowl (a 35-34 loss to Michigan in overtime).

Alabama will be playing a post-season game at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome for the ninth time in school history and the Crimson Tide has a 6-2 record in those eight prior contests. Overall, this will be Alabama’s 15th bowl game appearance in the city of New Orleans with the Tide owning an 8-6 record. Alabama also participated in the Sugar Bowl in 1945 (a 29-26 loss to Duke), 1948 (a 27-7 loss to Texas), 1962 (a 10-3 win over Arkansas), 1964 (a 12-7 win over Ole Miss), 1967 (a 34-7 win over Nebraska), 1973 (a 24-23 loss to Notre Dame), 1975 (a 13-6 win over Penn State), 1978 (a 35-6 win over Ohio State), 1979 (a 14-7 win over Penn State), 1980 (a 24-9 win over Arkansas), 1990 (a 33-25 loss to Miami), 1993 (a 34-13 win over Miami), 2009 (a 31-17 loss to Utah) and 2012 (a 21-0 win over LSU).

Alabama has played in more bowl games (61, not counting one vacated appearance and including the upcoming Allstate Sugar Bowl) and earned more bowl wins (34) than any school in college football history. The Crimson Tide has posted a 34-22-3 all-time bowl record. The Crimson Tide is making its seventh consecutive bowl appearance under head coach Nick Saban and the 10th straight overall for the school. Saban is 5-1 in bowl games at Alabama, defeating Notre Dame in the 2013 BCS National Championship Game, defeating LSU in the 2012 BCS National Championship Game, defeating Michigan State in the 2011 Capital One Bowl, defeating Texas in the 2010 BCS National Championship Game and defeating Colorado in the 2007 Independence Bowl. The Tide’s bowl loss under Saban came in the 2009 Sugar Bowl against Utah.

  1. I’m wondering which Alabama team will show up for this game. I’m concerned that our guys won’t be motivated after the loss to Auburn. This reminds me of the loss to Florida in 2008 when we decided not to show up against Utah. I’m hoping that we come out like we did against Michigan st. in the Capital One Bowl.

    1. The Iron Bowl against Auburn was a terrible performance by Alabama. Nevermind motivation—–even if they’re not motivated they would still detroy most teams just as a side effect of not making as many fundamental mistakes as in the Iron Bowl.

However, I can’t imagine they aren’t motivated. If they aren’t, the coaches and leaders will force them to get motivated. But motivation simply hasn’t been a problem at the University of Alabama since that loss to Utah.

I’m with you——I think it’s going to look a lot like the Michigan State game in Miami. That one was a slaughter. Even our pocket-passing QB got some big hits in and a huge block for a Julio Jones go-ahead touchdown. I love Oklahoma, but I’m afraid they’re in for a massacre.

  2. Alabama should be a heavy favorite. I’m proud that my Sooners will get to play the best program with the best coach in the country.

      1. Yes. We all watched the Iron Bowl. ESPN has called it Alabama’s worst performance in four years. Alabama is the best team in the country, and Nick Saban is the best coach in college football.

  3. I can’t wait. I’ve missed New Orleans so much since 2011, but getting to go to the game on a Thursday instead of a Monday night is going to be incredible. Roll Tide.

  4. I have not seen a meltdown like the ones that are on the bama message boards in a long time. For something to be just ” rumors” and ” barner bs” there are a lot of worried bammers this morning. On the other hand the Texas boards are a buzz with excitement. So after the team banquet, lil nicky jumped on a plane headed to Austin? Plus he is yet to sign the current contratc offer that has been on the table for days! This could be just hick bammers having a useless panic attack , but if anything comes out of this , it will be a meltdown for the ages. There is already bammers spewing hate at saban , and the man has not left yet. Also bammers calling for the AD’s and university president’s head! Even if this is just a ploy by sexton to get nick more power/money, I hope they drag this out for a few weeks. I am sure the recruits would just LOVE to watch this soap opera play out!

    1. WTF are you blathering about, Name-Of-The-Day? There’s no meltdowns going on on any Bama boards that I have seen – just the opposite, in fact. Just because you’ve had wet dreams about Saban leaving the best coaching job in America for the past 2 weeks doesn’t make them true. Please continue with your delusions, but how about take them somewhere they can be appreciated, like the Weagle message boards. Auburn has had a magical season, and you guys continue to push this junk – you’re a riot!

    2. Says the new bandwagon Auburn fan on Big Brother’s website…?

Let me know if you want any advice on your trip to Pasadena. I had a great time out there.

Nevermind. You don’t go to Auburn football games, and certainly not to their bowl games now that they got back into one.

      1. I don’t go to Auburn games? ROFLMFAO!! This is your best comeback? REALLY? Which ticket stubs / recruit passes would you like to have pictures of? Which gameday photo would you like me to send to you? I go to more High School/College games in a month than you do the entire year. See what you fail to understand is I am a father of 3 football players. My oldest has gone on numerous recruiting visits the past 2 seasons/years. My middle son took his first visit as a Sophomore this year. My Youngest is just in Middle School , and will be a beast as well. My oldest has been to the saban OL/DL camps, auburn and alabama football junior camps, has offers from teams from the D-1 level to the NAIA level, along with being invited to and doing quite well at top prospect camps. He finished in the top 5 in the nation as a rising Sophomore at the 2012 National Top prospect camp in Norman , Oklahoma. He was invited for his Sophomore and Junior year to play in the underclassmen all american game in Myrtle Beach South Carolina , But since we live in Alabama he could not take part in any post season /non school related games until after his Senior year.
This crap coming from a person (cantdoit) who the only helmet he has ever put on was the one they made him wear on the short bus. This is really the worse form of a rival fan’s smack talk that I have ever seen in my life! You are in true desperation mode in looking for anything to use as a comeback, and yet you come out looking more like a mouthy bitch each time. lmao So just tell me which passes/photos you want , and I will be glad to send them to you.We have tons of camp t-shirts if you would like one. Hell would you like photos of the hand written letters from bama, UCLA, Arkansas, Missouri, TCU, and tons of other schools from all levels of play that my sons get?Maybe I should send you copies of the emails that we get too showing you the invites to games and campus visits. I go to games cantdoit and most of the time it is free. Do you?

        1. Yes, send pictures. Send anything, really. It’s hard to believe the things you say but I try to give people the benefit of the doubt and it all sounds very exciting. Send the hand-written letter from the University of Alabama since that one would be my favorite anyway.

I pay for and travel for a lot of football games, mostly Clemson and Alabama. When I need press passes those games are free. I’ll be in New Orleans again for the Sugar Bowl and I can hardly wait. Then I’m off to Miami the next day for the Orange Bowl. I love bowl season.

I hope Atlanta was fun. Have fun in Pasadena. It’s one of my favorite places to watch a football game.

PS——It’s spelled “The Conduit.” I’m not sure why so many different Auburn fans keep spelling it wrong here in the comments.

          1. What email address do you want it sent to? Could care less if you believe it ,but if you really want confirmation, meet us at the Alabama Mississippi All Star game in Montgomery. We are heading up to watch one of my sons former teammates play. He too was recruited by the in state schools, but decided to go out of state to play. I will get you his autograph if you want.

          2. We all want to see.

Post it online and copy the link. Free image hosting is everywhere in 2013 and it’s so easy there’s only one excuse I can think of not to do it.

          3. So you want me to do all of this work just to make you happy??? Get a fucking life. lol I will gladly email you anything you would like, but going out and creating profiles to share with ” everyone” is not going to happen. You are the ” smart bammer” here so you go and make it work , and while you do that I am going to read how Auburn just flipped another bammer commit. WDE

          4. Let me get this straight.

Putting a single image online in 2013 is too much work?

Wow. If there was any doubt before, I am now certain you are an Auburn fan.

        2. You lying motherfucker. Nobody with a son in the position you say your’s is in, spends his dumbass time flaming on an obscure sports blog like this one. Much less runs his damn mouth about the things you are shitting out of your mouth. If what you say is true, then you are mentally ill. i’m sure you son is real proud of you. Faggot!

    3. Stupid motherfucker. Saban has been on the go recruiting since the day after the IB. He flew to Mississippi twice, to Ohio, to Texas and he’ll be doing the same until it’s time to prepare for the Sugar Bowl. Don’t you have Fla St to worry about you little dick sucking faggot?

  5. “this will be my last post in this thread. if he retires, it’s one thing, but if he leaves for texas the sad reality is that after all they’ve said to the contrary, it will prove what we as alabama fans have collectively denied (and what basically everyone outside the bama fan base has accepted for years as truth)…that saban’s word means absolutely nothing. ”

“But if they leave for Texas then it will cement what he worked so hard to try to erase and that’s he’s nothing but a liar. But this time I think it will be worse because not only did Nick beat the drum of “We’re not leaving” but his wife did as well. So they both will be viewed as liars.”

“My goodness. The level of anxiety in this thread is borderline clinical.

Earle may know something more, but, unless I’m missing something, the ONLY things the rest of have been told are:

    1. Saban was offered a contract extension.
    2. He has not signed off on the extension as quickly as anticipated.
    3. The delay may be because he’s giving some thought to Texas’ offer.

Unless there’s more to it than that, the situation is hardly worth any anger, sadness, or blame at this point!”

“I believe in preemptive scorn. I’ll feel better when if and when it does happen. The extension should’ve been signed by now if you want to stay!”

From a bama site admin :
“Know how you feel and my first impulse was that it was just a rumor. It’s not, but we’ll know the outcome very shortly…”

“Wow…this is going to give me nightmares! RTR”

“Please god tell me we won’t have to wait ’til like Tuesday or anything. I’ve already gone through half a bottle of Makers Mark and somehow can still type coherent thoughts.”

And this is just 1 page from a bama site. There was 30+ pages of stuff like this, and some was even more suicidal. So yes….meltdown is about right lil gump

    1. You sure do know a lot about Alabama web sites, little brother.

Wait, you said a contract extension? You mean to extend Nick Saban’s cotnract with the University of Alabama beyond the already-existing 2020 contract?

      That would be fantastic.

So let me get this straight, you’re a new Auburn fan, browsing Alabama and now Texas fan sites, then bringing the comments you pick to copy and post on another Alabama web site?

This is some seriously epic Little Brother-ing going on. Shouldn’t you be picking your airline for the trip to Pasadena?

Wait. Lemme guess. You’re not going to Pasadena.

          1. So sweet to think of me, Little Brother.

No, I’ll be in New Orleans and Miami instead of Pasadena. I don’t miss Alabama bowl games. It’s just hard to keep up with sometimes, you know, because of all the bowls we go to.

            Roll Tide.

  6. I didn’t get my Christmas wish of an Iron Bowl rematch, but a Sugar Bowl game against Oklahoma is hardly a lump of coal.

Alabama has a lot to play for. Number one in all-time bowl games and bowl victories. Another Sugar Bowl trophy for the Bryant Museum. Could finish higher in the rankings than Auburn, with a better record. That would irritate Barnie.

  7. This is directed to ITK. When they played Drake he was running wild and then just as suddenly they pulled him and he didn’t show up any more. I hate hearing all the rumors and spectualations about why he didn’t play anymore and I’m hoping you can give me a more viable reason if you know anything about it….. Thanks and RTR

    1. I wondered the same thing. But TJ ran for 150 yards. It’s hard to pull someone running like that. It should have, would have been enough if not for all the other bullshit. The one run Yeldon didn’t make on 4th and 1 was not his fault. It was the fault of the dumbass who called the play and then didn’t change it when Awbie put 11 on the LOS. Fucking dumbass is all I can say about that. You can blame the loss on Saban, Smart and Nussmeier for their dumbass conservative game plan and play calling. Right now it wouldn’t bother me too much if all three of them left.

  8. Do you Bammer ReTaRds recall this article by Crapstone Report dated 12/04/2012?

    https://capstonereport.com/2012/12/04/christmas-comes-early-for-tide-fans-as-auburn-hires-gus-malzahn/18397/

How did that work for you, Bammer? Looks like the egg is on the writer’s face, as well as the Bammer Morons that bought this BS piece!

As I recall, this was ITK’s BS; what say you now ITK? Here is one of your goofy comments to go along with your goofy story!

    ITK
“December 6, 2012 at 4:24 am # It truly is a gay brand of football indeed. Have fun with it, barners!”

Just goes to prove Bammer fans aren’t as smart as they claim to be. Truth is; they are dumber than HELL!!

    BWAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA…..!!!

  9. Indy Vile, proof that living vicariously has become a way of life for some Volunteer fans (some LSU fans as well). Once a proud program, now a warm up game for most SEC teams including Vandy.

      1. Poor wittle Butt Hurt Volunqueer. No Bowl for you AGAIN! That 7 in a row must really SUCK. But, Oh Wait – you like SUCK! Bwaa Haww Haww! 45-10, 44-13, 37-6, 41-10, 12-10, 29-9, 41-17. More to come! RTR!

        1. AWW, poor wittle CrimsonTURD has a chapped ASS since his Bammer Cheathers didnt get in the BCS CG. TOO BAD!! What a great laugh everyone else had watching the kid from Auburn run back that FG attempt and score to put away the Crimson TURD!!! Hopefully, OU will do the same to the TURD and teach the OBNOXIOUS and CLASSLESS Bammer Moron Nation some manners!

          BAWHAWHAWHAWHAW HAW…….!!!

    1. Got that right, Indiana Vol. I was wrong for thinking Auburn was our only Little Brother. Little Brother Sydrome seems to have taken over the Midwest, even. Enjoy the bowl game.

      Oh, wait. Crud. Ouch.

  10. Malzahn has yet to sign his lucrative contract yet … So does this mean he is going to Texas as well ? It was rumored Texas was interested in him and it was the Gus bus “dream job ” . Hmmmm

  11. Why hasn’t Gus signed his lucrative contract yet ? It’s been a few days . Didn’t Texas have interest in him ? Wasn’t Texas his “dream” job ? Hmmm

      1. I think you’re right, Alabama was that good. They controlled their desitny the entire season, right to the last second.
