Alabama football: Saban statue & practice update

The Auburn smear on Alabama football recruit Brent Calloway continues. However, more information is known about the despicable efforts of Auburn fans. Also, The University of Alabama football team nears the end of Spring Practice, and a video report on the Nick Saban statue. On to the Alabama football news and notes:

It has become clear that former Russellville High School coach and now Homewood High football coach Doug Goodwin was involved in an effort to intimidate Brent Calloway in hopes that it would force the star recruit to attend Auburn. Despicable. Why would any Alabama fan want their child to play for this douche? Homewood should fire Goodwin. Today.

ALABAMA FOOTBALL RETURNS TO PRACTICE TUESDAY (courtesy of UA)
The Crimson Tide will hold one more workout Thursday before A-Day Saturday.

The Alabama football team returned to practice Tuesday afternoon after taking Sunday and Monday off following Saturday’s scrimmage. The Crimson Tide worked out in full pads for just over two hours, completing the 13th of 15 spring practices.

The team had a chance to review the film for Saturday’s scrimmage with the coaching staff and most of the players felt like there was some improvement from the first scrimmage to the second.

“From a defensive standpoint, I feel like we competed better than we did (in the first scrimmage),” said senior noseguard Josh Chapman. “The offense threw up a lot of yards on us in the first scrimmage, so we tried to come back and compete and get back to playing Alabama football.”

Senior center William Vlachos agreed with Chapman on the team’s improvement and also talked about looking forward to Saturday’s game in Bryant-Denny Stadium.

“I’m kind of excited about it because I didn’t get to play in it last year,” said Vlachos. “It’s certainly going to be a great opportunity to put together a perfect scrimmage if you will. We’ve improved in both the scrimmages we’ve had, this is kind of that opportunity to get to play and improve on the things they’ve coached us to do this spring. It’ll be exciting.”

The winning A-Day team will enjoy a steak dinner while the losing squad eats franks and beans. Chapman has enjoyed steak following each of his previous A-Day contests.

“I’d like to go out on top,” said Chapman. “I haven’t lost one yet. It’s the last one, let’s get this win.”

Last year’s A-Day attendance of 91,312 led the country and over the last four years, Alabama has totaled 345,700 fans at A-Day. UA established a college football record in the spring of 2007 as a capacity crowd of 92,138 watched head coach Nick Saban’s first A-Day at Bryant-Denny Stadium. With expansion pushing stadium capacity over 100,000, Alabama will once again have a chance to regain the spring game attendance record this year (Ohio State had 95,722 in 2009).

Former UA offensive lineman Justin Smiley attended Tuesday’s practice. Smiley, a three-year letterman with the Tide (2001-03), is entering his eighth year in the NFL as a member of the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Alabama will return to practice Thursday afternoon and spring drills conclude with A-Day on Saturday at 2 p.m. The game will be televised by ESPNU and on ESPN3 with Dave Neal, Andre Ware and Tom Luginbill calling the action. The full list of weekend activities surrounding A-Day, beginning with Thursday’s baseball game against Tennessee, can be found on rolltide.com.

  1. Ok, even if I were a Bama person I would say this:
It is terrible luck to erect a statue of a current coach. He hasn’t proven anything accept he can recruit ‘as well’ as anyone else in the SEC…
    That’s it.
Do you really want him honored in the same form as Bear Bryant? If I were on that campus, I would oppose this at all costs.
What if his legacy sucks? Then you’re stuck with that homage. I guess you can melt it down if you have too.
But even if he doesn’t embarrass you…you want to put him in the category of legend and dynasty?
    It looks desperate guys

  2. no it looks like an area where coaches are honored foor winning the national championship….dead or alive..retired or current past or present – capiche?

  3. ‘hammah’
I imagine you bouncing around like a monkey in a small room and stopping at the screen occasionally between bananas to post a quick pro quo.

  4. au was like the criminal on a high speed car chase just out for one last ride to they crashed into the 3rd rail – mission accomplished

  5. Man, how disappointed you are going to be.
I hear you guys can close an investigation in 24 hrs. That’s amazing, you must have ESP?

  6. How sweet; a statue for little Nicky SATAN!

I wonder if it will be the same height as Napoleon was?

  8. Barner, worry about Auburn, and why would you name the field after Pat Dye, who presided over the pay-for play Auburn was convicted of last time Auburn got caught paying players. Are they going to name the parking lot after Chizik now?

  9. No a$$hole, I think we can be pretty damn sure he’ll live up to the statue. All he’s done in his career is bring Toledo, Michigan St, LSU and Alabama back from mediocraty. Won a national championship a 2 schools – the only current coach to have done that. Made Alabama the winningest team in the nation and the SEC over the past three years. Set a BCS record with the most wins over the last three years. Picked to play for the National Championship again this year. Oh yeah, AND 4 top 5 including 2 #1 recruiting seasons. Now if you bastards are stupid enough to even consider building a statue of Cheeze Dick, THEN you can begin worrying about all those things you mentioned. SFO! RTR!

  10. Nice job spelling “mediocraty” EGG HEAD!

You just proved my point again as ununeducated classless Bammer MORON!

  11. Considering that you are thr epitamy of a mediocre piece of $hit IV, then you surely know how to spell it. Bwaa Haww Haww! RTR!

  12. “Considering that you are thr epitamy of a mediocre piece of $hit IV, then you surely know how to spell it. Bwaa Haww Haww! RTR!”

Nice job on spelling (thr epitamy) again Egg Head. You just keep proving my point!

    RTR = Run TURD Run??

  13. Only a Vile fan can make fun of someone misspelling a word WHILE misspelling a word… Twice. (“THE has an “e” at the end, not an “r”.) My 4 year old has a couple of workbooks you can borrow if you need them. Books are those things that have words in them that your teachers used to read to you while you picked your nose in school. School was that place that your parents sent you during the day so they could drink themselves stupid and forget that you existed.

  14. I’m probably going to be criticized from my Crimson brethren – but I think it’s just a little too early for the statue – I just do. Sure he deserves it – I just think it’s just too damn early.

  15. Hey phly2hell (aka DUMBASS)

“Only a Vile fan can make fun of someone misspelling a word WHILE misspelling a word… Twice. (“THE has an “e” at the end, not an “r”.)”

Your uneducated brother misspelled THE, not me. See quotes, MORON!

  16. Idiot V0L: You are pretty dense. How old are you, 12? Your vocabulary isn’t particularly impressive. The only game you have is calling people DUMBASS, MORON, CHEATING BAMMER, or a variation of those words. Nothing concrete, no addition to the conversation, just pure hate. You seem to have some issues with Bama fans in general, and it must make you feel really good after all those beatdowns you have been taking to call us names. You are just a sad little troll. Face the truth, UT is irrelevant, and after all the snitching Fulmer did, look what he got out of it, compared to the shape Bama is in now. It really pisses you off, and you can tell.
