UA grad & broadcasting pioneer Simmons dies

AP: Pioneering sports broadcaster Chester R. Simmons, who served as president of ESPN during the company’s launch in 1979, has died. He was 81. …Simmons was born on July 11, 1928, in New York City, and was raised in Ossining, N.Y., and Pawtucket, R.I. He earned a bachelor of arts degree in broadcasting from the University of Alabama.

  1. What did not make it into some of the press is that my family is setting up a scholarship in my fathers name at the University of Alabama School Of Communication and information Sciences. Details are still being worked out.

    My fathers love for the school that honored him with an induction into it’s Hall Of Fame runs deep, and we hope that we can help many students in the years to come follow their dream in broadcasting and communications.
