Stop reading the Birmingham News

Auburn and the state media
Auburn and the state media

Commentary by Alan
Being number 1 is rough.

Well maybe not. Sure you have to deal with the slings from rivals trying to catch you, but that is life. Also part of the life of a champion is dealing with a confrontational press.

Those pompous pimps of positivism (aka those bums that work for Newhouse or Advance or whatever the hell the state’s major newspaper ownership is calling itself these days) have decided to as a newspaper columnist once said, “comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable.”

In other words the Birmingham News has declared its positive preference for Auburn.

This wasn’t an overnight thing. It has been happening for years. The newspaper has ignored journalistic standards in its sports department for a significant period of time. In fairness to the newspaper, when it hires an Alabama beat writer the newspaper has done a good job. Ian Rapoport asked Nick Saban tough questions. That was his job. Don Kausler has done a good job too. It isn’t always popular to hold coaches accountable, but that is one reason beat writers exist. (Well the main reason is to sell newspapers by covering something people care about. The bottom line is always the real motivator in the newspaper business. But you make money by following journalistic principles. Kind of.)

In contrast the Birmingham News and al.com have ignored any semblance of objectivity when it comes to Auburn. The paper loves the school. While Kevin Scarbinsky gives Gene Chizik oral in his blogs and columns, the newspaper employs Charles Goldberg to cover the beat. Has Goldberg ever written anything other than Auburn spin? If so, it hasn’t made it into the newspaper. The company loves the school too. The company employed for many years Auburn sycophant Phillip Marshall—Marshall now writes for the fan site Auburnundercover.com. (How is that working out?) He continues to cheerlead for Auburn, but at least it is in a more appropriate venue.

The Birmingham News is complicit in an Auburn media strategy to promote the school’s message. Scarbinsky’s columns are just one element of that. Today Scarbinsky wrote on al.com a column comparing Nick Saban’s recruitment of Memphis standout Keiwone Malone and Cullman’s Spencer Region. According to Scarbinsky, the commitment is the “Fort Sumter of the 2011 recruiting season.” He writes, “Go deeper, though, and these two talented football players could have one thing very much in common. Like Malone, who signed Wednesday with Alabama, Region – who committed Saturday to Auburn — may become as much of a symbol as a prospect.”

A high school kid’s hissy fit hardly qualifies as a Fort Sumter moment. It is more like a Midol moment.

The situation is so intolerable that other media members have commented on Scarbinsky’s absurd love for Gene Chizik.

But al.com has a history of such pathetic pandering and bias. When C.J. Mosley committed to the Tide a story ran on al.com under the headline: “Bama picks up Mosley, but loses shot at Dixon.” A story on Theodore linebacker C.J. Mosley included one (ONE!) paragraph on Mosley—and Mosley was one of the top recruits in the state and he lived not very far from Mobile. The remainder of the story was on a cornerback from Texas picking another school. The out-of-state guy merited three-fourths of the entire post on Alabama football recruiting.

Often such minor stylistic decisions are simply a reflection of pressing time concerns. A newspaper will compress the story about Mosley because it has covered him in the past, and it needs to present new information about a new subject that is related to the overall theme—in this case recruiting. However, can we so easily dismiss it in this case? Or is it a systemic bias? Why fail to provide more information on a good thing for Alabama, but provide significant coverage of what might be a bad thing? When you look at the history of al.com’s Auburn cheerleading, you might have an answer.

But why such negativism for Alabama and love for Auburn? Wouldn’t it hurt the bottom line? Not necessarily.

It might be in the psychology of the respective fans. Alabama fans want to feel persecuted. This gives Crimson Tide fans something to complain about—those outsiders writing negative things. The best example was how so many fans were outraged when the story of Mark Ingram is told. Some fans complain on talk radio about how often the fact that Ingram’s father, Mark Ingram Sr., is in prison gets mentioned on television. They ask, “Why does Verne Lundquist have to say that?”

Why? Because it is a story! A good story. The fact Mark Ingram overcame things like a father in prison to stay focused on football and win the highest individual award in college football and help his team win a national championship makes Ingram even more impressive as a player and individual. But all fans hear is “prison” and that makes them want to complain. This is emblematic of the Alabama mood. Fans aren’t happy unless they have something to bitch about.

In contrast, Auburn is like a cult. The obsessive talk of “family” and “faith” that infuses everything about Auburn football presents a picture of intense groupthink. Dissent is not allowed, and it is in fact punished. One member of the press told me that failure to adhere to the Auburn line leads to reduced access or no access. (I’ll point out right here that when I did a story on SEC athletic department budgets, Auburn was a refreshing experience. Terry Windle called and told me the number when other athletic departments—Alabama—failed to provide the data in a timely fashion. Auburn and certainly Alabama were not as quick or professional as Florida, Tennessee, Kentucky or Mississippi State, but Auburn was better than Alabama in my limited experience.) Another member of the press told me in his experience that Auburn fans are less likely to read something negative, even if truthful, about Auburn. Doubt that Auburn is a cult? Then why were coaches’ wives yelling out a major member of the media following the Auburn Iron Bowl loss? Dissent must be punished. Send in the harpies!

So there could be economic interests that play into the Birmingham News’ actions. Piss off Alabama fans and get increased revenue as fans read it and link it; support Auburn and reap the benefits of the family or cult mentality. However, there is a simple way to fix this imbalance.

Alabama fans should stop giving aid and comfort to the enemy. Every dime you spend on the Birmingham News, Mobile Press Register or Huntsville Times pays the salary of people like Charles Goldberg and other Auburn apologists. Why subsidize this? This amounts to a gift to Auburn recruiting.

The Birmingham News is now run by an (apparent) Auburn fan. So, every dime you spend on advertising and subscriptions pays her salary and bonus which in most newspaper companies is the key compensation element for publishers.

I canceled my subscription just before the BCS National Championship Game in response to it. I realized I don’t need the Birmingham News. I read the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal and the Financial Times. Is there any news in the Birmingham News that I don’t get from these other sources? The traditional spin is that newspapers provide local content; however, is there anything in the Birmingham News that isn’t available for free on local television or radio? Without investigative pieces like Brett Blackledge’s examination of the two-year college system, the newspaper is worthless. But that is news. What about sports? Is there anything from al.com or the Birmingham News that you can’t find elsewhere?

The answer is a resounding NO. The Internet has made the Tuscaloosa News available for every Alabama fan. (And with a writer like Cecil Hurt who is the most connected and informed reporter covering Alabama football, why would an Alabama fan read anything else?) In today’s environment Alabama fans don’t need the Birmingham News. The Birmingham News needs Alabama fans. So it is time for Alabama fans to stop giving aid and comfort to the enemy. Read other print publications and Internet publications instead of the Birmingham News.

  1. I would like to point out some other things to keep the Fire Roaring.
Using Content to promote Editorial Opinions on the following Issues.
    1. Capital Punishment (Abolish)
    2. Illegal Aliens (The More – the Merrier)
    3. Mass Transit ( We Need More Empty Buses Running every 15 minutes)
    4. Hatred for All Gambling ( Poor People Must Spend their Money better !)

  2. You are talking about other people being biased in their articles? Read this one! This isn’t even an “I love Saban” article. It’s an “I think that Auburn may start to do well again so I’m going to bash everything about them I can” article. So what if Auburn has a great family atmosphere? That’s one thing that almost every alumni loves about Auburn. And you can’t even START to call Auburn a colt. Alabama is already building a statue of “the great leader.” I’ve read plenty of articles on al.com and in the Press Register, Mobile, and Birmingham news sources loving on Bama. ESPECIALLY during the Iron Bowl. Not sure if you know, but al.com has it’s own section for Bama and Auburn, and I’ve seen some pretty full articles on the Bama side too. Stop showing half the facts and being so biased and try to do a professional article.
    Thanks.

  3. You really don’t even see the hypocrisy from one paragraph to the next, do you ITK?? You condemn AU as a “cult” on the basis that dissent is not allowed, and then immediately thereafter you ecourage Bama fans to cancel all subscriptions to the Bham News and other papers because they publish dissenting stories about Alabama. You then encourage readers to read the Tuscaloosa News and Cecil Hurt, who is financially indebted to a freakin’ Bama booster. (and OMG I can only imagine the freakin’ caniption fit you would have if you found out that sports editor of the Bham News had personal loans with Lowder).

Geez ITK, Bama just won an NC and has the allmighty Saban. Why do you even care if AU gets some positive press in the local papers (and ESPN and SI and the Sporting News and USA Today and…)?? You do believe all this propoganda you’ve been spewing about Chizik being a joke and a total non-threat to Bama, don’t you?? So what does it even matter???

  4. Birmingham media? Auburn homers? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Wait. I’m not done. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Man, you crybabies just can’t stand any kind of Auburn coverage. WJOX is all Alabama all the time since you’ve been back on top. You have 4 hours of Auburn bashing on Finebaum and you get your thongs in a twist because Auburn has the better buzz on NSD? One day. Auburn got one day and all of a sudden there are already some confused and angry turds defending their livelihoods (I know, sad). Living in Birmingham, you really have a lot of nerve. You forget that Auburn fans have to put up with obnoxious/ignorant Gumps like yourselves on a daily basis in this area. Get a bucket. Your joke of a bandwagon fan base needs one to hold all the tears. I’ve seen enough keyed and vandalized cars of Auburn fans in this area in my lifetime to say your butt-hurt fans are giving me pure joy right now. Another reason Auburn fans are in such a good mood right now is articles such as this. Keep it coming.

By the flipping way, when Saban was hired, did the better team at the time get more coverage? Yeah, thought so. Hypocrite Nation strikes again.

  5. ITK didn’t write this. I did. He provided the editorial cartoon. I guess I’ just going to have to put bylines on everything.

As a note, I don’t have a problem with dissent. I encourage it. But I’m not going to subsidize the BS salary of Goldberg one more day. Period.

  6. Drew, you just don’t get it. The Capstone Report, like other blogs that cover rival programs, is not a NEWSpaper, but an online website for OPINIONS. The Birmingham News, on the other hand, is a city newspaper that purports to be objective in all its reporting, be it Sports, News, etc. One of the first rules of Journalism, one that the Bham News has obviously forgotten, is to be fair and objective in its writings. In other words, investigate and report the news, don’t CREATE or SLANT the news. Other examples of The Birmingham News bias is that it displays its logo on the scoreboard at Jordan-Hare Stadium. And Pam Siddell, the Birmingham News newly named Publisher, said in the article announcing her hiring: “War Eagle”. Yes, it was there in black and white for everyone to read. Everyone except al.com readers. In the same online article that appeared on al.com, her saying “War Eagle” was ommitted, probably because it would’ve been pointed out hereafter as an example of the Bham News bias.

  7. Amen Bamafan.

When someone views this website, it is immediately known what the editorial view is here.

That is NOT true of the Birmingham News. It purports to be one thing and its activities show it to be something else entirely.

  8. wow! alan, all i can say is what took you so long.

i jumped off this sinking ship three years ago.

after the obsfucation and outright lies spewed from it’s pages during the last season of shula, kevin scarbinsky’s lovefest with mark gottfried and his hatred of any alabama basketball fan who didn’t tow the company line, it blew my mind ANY alabama fan would continue to by that rag.

it occured to me one day that if they’re doing this on the sports pages, what are they crapping on us in issues that really count?

along comes the editorial board and it’s stand on the occupational tax issue. and like pluto stated above, on issue after issue THAT REALLY MATTERS, these guys are out to lunch. (and validated my thinking on the news as a whole time after time after time)

bottom line: i quit needing the birmingham news and their claptrap long ago.

alan, it’s bad it took something so trivial to bring you to the light, but it’s good to see you here.

    welcome.

(and as an aside, it’s been my experience that the thinking auburn faithful are politically conservative. i’d like to hear some objective views from ballplay and others on what they read in the snooze outside of the sports section)

  9. Did you ever notice on AL.com that the articles with the most comments are the ones with a positive slant to Auburn? As I write this, here are the top three commented-upon article titles and the number of comments for each:

Alabama misses out on Cullman OL Spencer Region, who commits to Auburn – 339

    Scarbinsky: Region’s the latest sign that it’s game-on for in-state recruits – 204

Cullman offensive lineman Spencer Region makes last-minute switch from Alabama to Auburn – 201

This is just a snapshot, but keep an eye on the numbers, and you can see the trend.

I’m guessing the AL.com is the only place an Auburn fan can go to get free content. There just aren’t enough Auburn fans to support more than one. Alabama fans have many more options. So maybe AL.com should change its name to AU.com and quit pretending to be neutral.

  10. Alan states that he reads the New York Times, Wall Street Journal and the Financial Times and this is the best writing we can get. You would think if he actually has read any of these, maybe some writing skills would eventually sink in.

  11. Alas Kevin no. If reading Aeschylus, Euripedes and Shakespeare have not improved my prose then I doubt any newspaper could.

  12. No, I understand the difference between this and a paper. But the writer is trying to make this fact instead of opinion, but not showing the other half of the story. Once again, I’ve lived in Mobile, Birmingham, and Ocean Springs (near Biloxi), and I do read al.com. All of these papers have just as much Bama love as they do Auburn, you just fail to realize it because you’re so caught up in the attention Auburn is getting. So what if a reporter or anyone else says War Eagle. Ive heard more Roll Tides from reporters than I ever have War Eagles. And for al.com, the reason those are the most commented on articles are because they are on the front page, and on Auburns and Alabamas football news pages on al.com. I looked at the comments, and they’re half Bama and have Auburn. All I’m trying to say is this article only shows half the facts, just to make it look like Auburn is so loved upon. Very poorly written.

  13. AL.COM
This is another example of Advance Publications cheesing People. It is shared by 3 papers and content is dated for the most part by the very obvious.
As Johnny Archibald said – “The Internet is the Enemy” as he was taking his 8% pay cut. That is how the damn thing is viewed in house and damn if it does not show.
Difficult to navigate and stale. Aubies should be ashamed to reference this Site as credible.
    Just fucking figures.

  14. I want to boycott The Birmingham News. After Scarbinsky’s punk ass WASTED a Heisman vote all to “put his name out there” as if it already wasn’t — I lost all respect to the newspaper.

They say the I-Tablet will save the print media — not in this town — and as far as al.com — I think smaller towns have a better online newspaper service than that. A big laughing stock. Enjoy your monopoly on the print media here in Birmingham TBN — nothing last forever.

  15. I like SABAN”s perspective on all media. He calls it “clutter.” That is what it is. Free Press is a constitutional right. I will read whatever I please, and they can print whatever thy want too. You went way over the line with this “crappy article.” It is unAmerican to incite others to stop reading free press articles. It borders on NAZI-ism. If this type of writing continues I will stop reading your articles. Adios.

  16. Drew, we’re not talking about a cub reporter, we’re talking the head of the entire newspaper, Publisher Pam Siddell, claiming that she cheers for Auburn and even going so far as to say War Eagle in a news story. Man, you’re in denial.

  17. uhhh, Wildman do you even know what the hell you are talking about?

It isn’t Nazism to suggest people should spend money to support things they believe in and not spend their money to punish those with differing views. In fact, I remember from American history classes that the American Colonies used economic boycotts to punish England. All I did was simply encourage people who don’t like what the Birmingham News is doing to vote with their wallets and stop complaining about it. Because readers can’t really blame the Birmingham News for shitty content if they continue to buy the shitty content.

  18. As I write this, I am watching today’s Bham News sports section, my last, burn in my fireplace. That truly is the only good use for it.

Cappy, bravo. You could have written more, but you absolutely nailed it.

I echo your call to abandon the News, and AL.com as well. I once had an al.com employee tell me that he didn’t care for Scarbinsky but he generated “great” traffic. Didn’t matter how much he incited with his ridiculous words, all that mattered was traffic.

Bama fans, join me and Cappy in beating the drum to abandon the Birmingham News and al.com. Expect this site to remind you of this need weekly.

I will not support Auburn recruiting anymore. I am abandoning the Birmingham News and Al.com.

If you want Bama news, capstonereport.com or tidesports.com (the Tuscaloosa News’s sports site).

  19. CRIMSON HAMMAH WHO DAT

I’M IN – ONLY A BARNANIMAL KNOWS HOW TIMES THEIR HEART HAS BEEN RIPPED TO SHREDS AND THEY CAN’T TAKE IT ANYMORE – THEY ARE FREAKED.

  20. CRIMSON HAMMAH WHO DAT

  21. CRIMSON HAMMAH WHO DAT

ALL SE CITY NEWSPAPERS SHOULD BE BANNED ALL HAD INGRAM OFF HEISMAN BALLOT….AUBURN KNOXVILLE GAINESVILLE NEW ORLEANS JACKSON FAYETVILLE

  22. Go ahead and boycott it, see if I care. It is still a free country. It is you who has grandiose notions of power ITK. Whomever you can get to boycott can be your little NAZI’s. Yeah propaganda is how the NAZI’s started, by boycotting free press. Maybe you need a history lesson. Suck it up.Birmingham news does not control the CRIMSON NATION. Don’t think otherwise. I like it when our team wins and proves the journalist wrong. In the art of war it gives incentive to beat the hell out of your opponent. SABAN is not afraid of clutter and neither should you. Good luck in causing your boycott. I just think it is silly.

  23. I believe you are a bit overstating the case. I don’t expect people to stop reading the local newspaper, but they should. I’m not really calling for a boycott, but personally I’m not going to buy that cat litter box liner. Period.

Why does that bother you so much?

Why does me expressing my opinion bother you? It isn’t Nazism to not buy something you don’t like. Good grief.

  24. crimson hammah, don’t you know these comments will be here forever unless one of the turds deleted them? You’re the same douchebag that bashes recruits on here. Apparently that’s a common thing to allow in Turdland. Obviously spouting off about “13” MNC’s and “Auburn cheating” really clouds your judgment on the cheating that went on with the cheater bear.

Pop quiz… Past 25 years in the Iron Bowl… how well has that gone for ya… little brother? Yeah, if little brother whips the older brother’s ass. If you were alive in the bear era, good for you. But you’re old. This generation can’t say they’re better than Auburn, and that’s what really gets to you turds.

  25. And wildman, Cappy wrote the article, not me. Although I agree with it completely. I just threw in the art. But don’t feel bad; Julia missed that one earlier too…seems her reading comprehension is still lacking.

  26. I totally agree with the ban on Birmingham news and I had already long ago canceled my subscription to the Birmingham News. I was so sick and tired of reading Kevin’s obviously biased articles. I am also so sick and tired of hearing from the media and the Auburn fans about there newfound “recruiting dominance.” Give me a break. Do it for three years than toot your horn. Furthermore, everyone knows that the year after a national championship teams usually do very well. There is no doubt in my mind Alabama will be competing for a “real” national championship and the recruiting national chmapionship in the years to come and I would like to see if before I believe Auburn will.

  27. I canceled my subscription to the Mobile Press register in November. I took the paper for 30 odd years. Their paper is a joke and not worth 5 cents. The Monday edition is pathetic and their editorial page lacks a lot. Since they fired Howard Bronson, the Editor, the paper has declined rapidly. The Langiappe, a local independent paper is a much better read. After I canceled it they called me and asked if I wanted Monday through Friday for free… I declined.

  28. Timmay,

Does your team have a crystal football? No? Then shut the fuck up.

    Alan,

You should be as fortunate as I am. I cancelled my subscription to the News when I got tired of Ian and Scarbo in 2008. I have always failed to see why other people regard those idiots as “authorities” on anything.

The funny thing is that I have continued to receive a paper for a year and a half for free. Not that it matters, 5 to 6 days a month the damn thing is so wet you can’t read it. Nonetheless, Don Kausler is a great writer and his pieces are the best things I’ve seen on Alabama in a long time.

As far as bias, yes the News is and always has been biased. They are always positive for the Barn. Am I the only one that noticed Jerraud Powers (probably the #63 best corner out of all starting corners in the NFL) on the cover of the News this weekend. Why, pray tell, is he on the cover of the News? And yes, he was on the Front Page, not the front of the Sports Section. Powers was on the cover because he is an Auburn Alumn.

Where was Roman Harper? Sure, Harper is an awful safety, but I’m sure you can find 100’s of photos of Harper to go with Powers. I doubt that Harper will be on the cover of Monday’s edition, even though he now is a Super Bowl Champion. Unlike Powers, who is once again, 2nd best, Roman Harper is a Champion.

  29. I read al.com to get a break from rivals and scout. I find sometimes they are up on a story before these premium sites. Seems to me you guys are reading the AU portion too much and not your own team. Nobody really cares if you choose not to read it, but I’ll bet 1 million some of your “opinion” blogs will be based off of an AU editorial writer on al.com in the future.

Care to take that bet? If you aren’t gonna read it, then you won’t write any of your slanted blogs in the future based off of any articles. Can’t see that ever happening cause you won’t have anything interesting yourself to write about.

One more thing, if Fineslum had mispronounced Sabans name on air on purpose, let’s say Nick Satan, then could you blame Terry Saban to verbally accost him. You would be the first to cheer her on, so don’t think you are taking the high road here.

  38. If you want to read a bad newspaper try the tennessean paper in Nashville, TN. Has 2 good sports writers and that is it!! Al.com is probably just trying to stir the pot to get more readers
and will say anything just like F-bomb to make headlines!!
    RTR

  39. Go to al.com sometimes.
    Ask tough questions about auburn.
Dont insult anyone, just ask tough questions. You will become unpopular quick, fast, and in a hurry.
It wont be long until you are getting flamed by morons, who will insult you, your family, your friends, your values….etc…etc…. and banned by mods.
I canceled my subscription months ago, when I realized that there was no room for dissent or questioning the status quo.
I personally dont have any problem with Charles Goldberg. he is a nice enough guy, who… is trying to earn a living and take care of his family. And he is a beat writer who is positive toward the auburn cause. But the rest have no credibility what so ever.
I think Evan Woodverry may be the best of the lot… he reports fairly. He is not as popular with the Aubbos, but he has gained my respect.
The Birmingham news is Auburn’s boy. And if Bama fans started pulling there subscriptions, they would have to change their tune.
So I want to encourage all Bama fans, dump your subsriptions to The News, and if you buy the News…. stop.

  40. Al.com has been pretty crappy since the day ian rappaport left. As a matter of fact, I can’t off the top of my head remember who took his place. Cecil Hurt and Randy Kennedy are the guys to listen to for UA news. The BN has pretty much always sucked- news, sports, and otherwise. Read the Press Register.

  41. I agree that al.com is the worst blog in the world. I go there only to check to see if there is Bama news. I do not actually read most of the articles and certainly not the blog comments because I think they are hideous.

Here is the deal. Finebaum, Scarbo and the like think that it is their job to cause controversy. Finebaum for example is a Tennesee grad and if you think he is on UA or AU side, you are wrong. His goal is to have some sort of mess going on his radio show and blog TO BRING FAME TO HIMSELF. Same for Sarbo.

If you don’t like it then you should not even read their online articles. They count reads to show they are doing a good job.

The other thing is that once you get to the top of the mountain, the media will do everything to try to knock you off of it so people will keep reading.

Newspapers are losing money out the ass and they will do anything to keep people reading so if you want to “punish” them then yes, stop reading online as well.

  42. 2 RINGER FAN - SAINTS BAMA

TECHNICALLY AU HAS 6 SEC CHAMPIONSHIPS – BUT IN REALITY – LSU WON 1988 SEC CHAMPS – BOTH TIED WITH ONE LOSS – BUT THE RULE OF SPORTS IN A 2 TEAM TIE, U GO TO THE HEAD TO HEAD AND LSU WON THEREFORE THE TRUE SEC CHAMPS OF 88 THE LSU TIGERS AND THUS OLE MISS IS AHEAD AU WITH SEC CHAMPIONSHIPS

  43. Its a sad state of affairs for the Bammer nation when a poster named “wildman” is the voice of reason. The Regions deal is NEWS cappy. Ive read sero pro Au or negative UA spin on any of it. They simply quoted what the kid said. Might I remind you that this kid was a lifelong Bammer.

Yall need to suck it up. This is by far the biggest bunch of titty babies Ive seen in my life. Yall just won the BCS !!!!! Get a grip. Its newsworthy and its been reported , get over it.

  44. On a weekend when AL wins the game and Auburn loses, look at the picture. It inevitably will be a goofy shot of two AL fans celebrating so that they look awkward. If Auburn is featured, the photo is a nice action shot. Also, the wording for AL wins is always couched in terms of “just managed to win” and “despite slew of problems” etc. If Auburn wins, it is in terms of “dominated over” and “win X in a row.” I’ve known that Bham news is biased for a long time, but I subscribe to Sunday and Wednesday paper only because there is no other local alternative.

  45. Shouldn’t you have been somewhat prepared before going on a regional radio show. Good grief that was awful! Not only has your argument made reasonable Bama fans a laughing stock, but you go on the radio unprepared, with a tacky argument, and have no actual dated examples of where the B’ham news has suddenly become so biased. Unbelievable! I never thought someone could make Bama fans cringe more than the voice of shane on the radio, but you sir, take the cake. Please go away, stop acting so paranoid about AU, stop getting owned by the clueless finebaum callers, and stick to being a blogger. You embarrassed many of us today. Thanks a lot.

  46. “Wut thu hayul!? Whyy aint tawkin abowt Awlabama awl thu tyme! I kaint read innyhow but if I cud, I wud be so ticked cus thay aint ritin abowt bama er Nyk Saybin evry day lyke thay shud! By thu way master Saybin, if yer readin thius, cud yew send me a pictur uv yew nekid sow I kin carry in my biw fowd?

  47. I totally agree with you Alan. A friend and I noticed right after the SEC championship that every single day Goldberg and company had atleast 4 or 5 blogs on Auburn that pumped up the Outback Bowl and recruiting. If an Alabama fan goes to Goldbergs blog and post anything he deletes the comment. But if you go to a bama blog you can say anything. For every article or talk about the Nationl Title game you would have atleast 4 blogs about nothing pro Auburn. I havent been to Al.com since.

  48. Thanks clay already know that. Example a few weeks ago on a Goldberg blog talking recruiting with an au fan. He brings up Albert Means and memphis recruiting bashing bama. So I decide to mention Eric Ramsey. Guess which comment was deleted by the Nazi Goldberg?

  49. there should be a disclaimer on this site that says the blog on this site is written by an inbred mouthbreathing bammer.

  50. Keep it down home cuz. Lets talk about Auburns signed recruit Corey Lemonier with his new Corvette and his comment that he will be attending the ” University of Auburn” LOL

  51. Lets talk about Eric smith and the cover up that other players were involved. Lets talk about the Au police watching him beat the shit out of someone. Lets keep it down home.

  52. Auburn starts doing really well in recruiting and we get attention so now its biased? Do you know how many articles were released that said “5-19” What the big deal is is this. Alabama doesnt get much hype cause they were “ordained” to be the best and recruit the best. But when you have Auburn beat Bama at getting recruits, yes it is a big deal and will get attention. Its a simple process, when the school that is expected to do something does it, its no big deal…When a school does something they are not expected to do, your going to hear about it. If you dont like to read the paper cause its not all about Alabama being the best in the world…Just listen to FineBaum.

  53. I come from a long line ob great Alabama fans.
None of us ever attended college. My father was a Tide fan, he gave a lot of money to Bill Oliver when he was coaching with Coach Bryant.
I have given a lot of money to Billy Neighbors. It is the way it is. If you ain’t baggin you ain’t winning. We have to win at all cost.
I was just in Decatur today to get a refund.
I always thought the B’news wrote and gave us all the coverage, hell we burried the barn on the second page.
What U have done is just stupid. Now U draw all this attention to us again, the news will be pissed off and they will start trying to find people like me that helps pay the bills. Go back into your hole and keep your fucking mouth shut.

  54. Joey

Guys like you that thrive on putting down high school recruits make us all look really bad. Look at all the Bama boards. 1/2 the threads/talking points are putting down recruits that didn’t choose us. All you do is make us all look awful. We just won a national championship dude. Have you thought about that at all today?

  55. Drew the guy Im talking about wasnt even recruited by Alabama. I do not put down someone that doesnt choose Bama. Thats crazy! I think its an honor for someone to be offered a scholarship for there athletic ability. Your not getting my point. Im saying that the Au media will not report negitive stories on Auburn even if its true! Look back the Sociology Scandal a few years ago. Atleast in T Town they do report the news!

  56. The most shocking thing about all of this is that there are enough literate bama fans to actually know about any kind of bias towards Auburn in the newspaper.

  57. The guy you are talking about is another schools signee. He is in high school, and it does come off as sour grapes. That is all I am saying..Crazy or not. Our attitude right now is not consistent with a program that is at the top of the college football world and should be for the foreseeable future.

I see the news reporting and lack there of to go pretty much both ways as far as these things go. It’s the nature of the beast. I just think this angle needs to go away. Too many good people are being lumped in with this fringe group of bloggers/crazed fans and it really isn’t fair.

  58. Joey,
Why should Auburn writers comment on a INTERNET RUMOR… that is not good journalism— AL.com is not the Crapstone Report or TMZ

  59. The most insane post I’ve ever seen. All you’ve been able to see for the last month is Alabama this and Alabama that and this idiot….and he is an idiot..makes a claim like this? He can claim whatever he wants but I will guarantee you that most Auburn people know this is a bunch of crap and have known for years that the Bham news panders to Alabama just as much as FineSCUM panders to them,

  60. Hey cappy!!! Nice job on Paul’s show in the first hour — I wish that fucker from the Birmingham News would of stayed on longer — sports editor??? I can’t remember because I was in and out with customers but you were ripping him a new asshole and loved every minute of it. The most laughable — barner’s calling in trying to defend The Birmingham News on “jetgate” when they called for the firing of the whole sports department at TBN a couple of years ago.

This is a big FUCK YOU to Auburn.

Crystal bitches. (Rick James the hand)

  61. ^^^^^^I rest my case. Having more posts about auburn rumors, spreading paranoia, and going on the radio and making all good Bama fans look idiotic breeds this kind of stuff. No adult ???? should talk like that on a public forum, and no self respecting owner of said forum should stand for it. Even the “bloggers”. This is the group of people that the educated, civil, level headed ones of us are being lumped in with because of the drivel. This proves my point perfectly, and this gives the aubies that I am around more than enough fodder for their “sidewalk fan” argument for the next several months.

  62. Boy , yall really got your crimson thongs in a wad over the Regions thing. Thats what this whole article is about. Cap doesnt like people reporting the facts, or “getting to the truth” as he likes to put it.

  63. Most of the time, to me Al.com and the brimingham news is boring. Sometimes I read an article or whatever and it seems so obvious they are trying to stir the pot by saying something dumb. But it’s not funny like when finebaum says something. When Al.com or scarbinsky write an an article it reminds me of a little spoiled kid who needs attention. Complete waste of time.

  64. OK, OK. I’ll burn the damn paper the next time I see it. You’re not a NAZI. Just a BAMA ZEALOT! Keep on writing CAPPY. Sorry ITK. I stand corrected. ROLL TIDE ROLL!

  65. Auburn Sociology Dept

I have found al.com to be very pro-Auburn. Scarbo might as well be Auburn’s mascot. Every since Saban slapped him down at the BCS interview, he has taken it upon himself to attack Saban and Alabama at every opportunity. He continually wants to compare Chizik with Saban, and Auburn to Alabama. I won’t buy a Bham Newspaper, but I do read al.com. It has become nothing more than a propaganda rag for Auburn.

  66. Great article. I’ve said for several years that the B’ham news has an Auburn slant. Has Auburn ever had another beat writer besides Goldberg? What a joke. The cult is nothing but a bunch of wannabees and all they want to be is Alabama.
Also, if one of the cult members should come to read “The Capstone Report”, do they expect to also get an Auburn spin? That is laughable. Thanks

  67. You bugger eaters need to get on your own website, which by the way I don’t even know if you have one. You keep running your mouth and you have won nothing! Alabama will rack up in recruiting this year and have a 10-14 win season and the Barn will be lucky to squeak out seven or eight wins. You got one recruit (he was a good one and one we probably wanted), so what, we are in on 30 of the top 150 and we will get the top players in the state. We will have better season in the coming years as well so stop acting like a bunch of retards because you got one recruit. Act like you have been there before! Nevermind, that explains it all you haven’t!

  68. This is absolutely the funniest thing I’ve ever read. If one little article could provoke this kind of reaction what would the whole truth bring about.

  69. Wow, big shocker here, newspapers that are biased. I for one am too busy continuing to drink champagne out of my bcs rosebowl cup to even join in on the back and forth b.s. Boycott the newspaper if you guys want. Seems like the only reason half of you read it, is the sports page. C’MON SON!!!!! WHOSE GOT THE CRYSTAL!!!

  70. Do yourself a favor and make sure George is not going to call while you are on Finbaum.

You were absolutley owned on Finbaum…

Atchinson was Owned on Finbaum – does it getting any better………

  71. I laugh at those that are critical of you and your opinion on a BAMA site. I guess they aren’t intelligent enough to realize the difference between this site and the local newspaper. I suppose if I venture over to an Auburn blog, I will find glowing, complimentary articles on Bama sports. I certainly would not find anti-Saban rhetoric or any type of Alabama bashing. Heavens no!

The point you made yesterday is 100% valid. Someone put together a list of the headlines on the last 10-15 or so of Scabs articles. It accurately reflects the direction of the Bham News. I stopped taking it over a year ago. Hopefully others will do the same.

  72. Scabs latest:

    2/7: Region’s the latest sign that it’s game-on for in-state recruits
2/5: How about a new Saban Rule? I commit, I come; I commit, you quit
2/4: Who deserves statues more? Great coaches or great players?
2/3: Chizik didn’t blink in the face of Saban’s recruiting machine
2/2: Saban statue is too much, too soon
1/22: Saban is Dooley’s mentor, but Chizik could be his role model
1/21: Did Auburn have a better decade than Alabama? Yes By Kevin Scarbinsky
1/17: If Saban says this isn’t the end, shall we meet here same time next year?
    1/2: The Chizik-Saban parallel continues

  73. Just heard on Finebaum that the Publisher of the Birmingham News is an Auburn Fan – Cancel your subscription today! If you support the Birmingham News then you support Auburn

  74. Boy us Aubies are reaaally starting to get in the turds heads. Couldnt happen to a better bunch. Your showing your jealousy guys. Big time. I luv it though. Keep it up turds. We will take all your recruits. War Eagle Go Tigers

  75. Mandy, Keep up what, winning Championships. We can do that.
    can Auburn? No, Never ever.
Or was that a sexual proposition?
We don’t want any of your pussy!
    Auburn Pussies,kinda sounds like you
    got a new name.

  76. does anyone know how many birmingham news reporters traveled to the auburn/norwestern bowl game.i’ll bet that it matched the number that they sent to the bcs championship., but my guess it was more .does anyone have tis info.?thanks

  77. Cap, good job bringing this issue to light. Also, good job on Finebaum yesterday. You did something that Arenberg wouldn’t: you took phone calls. While you stood in there and took the heat from ignorant auburn callers, Arenberg chickened out. Next I suggest you post a list of the Bham News prominent advertisers so the boycott can pick up steam.
