Cody, Tiffin Named SEC Players of the Week; Nick Saban on Paul W. Bryant 2009 Coach of the Year Award Watch List
TUSCALOOSA – Alabama seniors Terrence Cody and Leigh Tiffin were named Southeastern Conference Players of the Week following their performance in the Crimson Tide’s 12-10 win over SEC rival Tennessee last Saturday in Tuscaloosa, the league office announced Monday.

Cody was named the SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week after his two blocked field goal attempts, including one on the game’s final play that secured the Crimson Tide’s 12-10 victory over the Volunteers. Cody blocked Daniel Lincoln’s 44-yard field goal attempt as time ran out and the Tide improved to 8-0 on the season. Cody also blocked a 43-yard field goal attempt earlier in the fourth quarter, tying the Alabama single-game record for blocked kicks in a game. He was also credited with two tackles in the win.

Tiffin was named the SEC Special Teams Player of the Week after successfully converting all four field goal attempts and accounting for all 12 points in the win over Tennessee. Tiffin made kicks of 38, 50, 22 and 49 yards on Saturday. Tiffin has made 11 field goals in the last three games against Mississippi (5-for-5), South Carolina (2-for-3) and Tennessee (4-for-4). For the season, he has made 20-of-23 (.870 percent) field goals attempts and has converted 15 of his last 16 kicks, dating back to the FIU game on Sept. 12.

Alabama has had at least one SEC Player of the Week honoree in seven of its eight games this season, with a total of eight players being recognized by the league office. Sophomore running back Mark Ingram (Virginia Tech and South Carolina) and freshman running back Trent Richardson (Florida International and Arkansas) have been honored twice each, while Rolando McClain (Kentucky), William Vlachos (Mississippi), Cody (Tennessee) and Tiffin (Tennessee) have been honored once each this season.

The Alabama coaching staff recognized five players of the week following the Crimson Tide’s win over Tennessee. Junior left tackle James Carpenter and sophomore wide receiver Julio Jones were the offensive selections, while senior cornerback Javier Arenas was the defensive player of the week. Cody and Tiffin were the Tide’s special teams players of the week.

Carpenter started at left tackle and helped the Crimson Tide produce 136 rushing yards and 4.5 yard per carry average against one of the nation’s top rushing defenses. He also paved the way for sophomore Mark Ingram’s 99 rushing yards that put him over 1,000 yards rushing on the season. Jones had a season-high seven catches for 54 yards in the win over the Vols. Arenas recorded a career-high 13 tackles for an Alabama defense that held UT to 76 rushing yards. He also added 3.5 tackles for loss (-21), one sack (-12) and one quarterback pressure.

Alabama head coach Nick Saban was among 20 head football coaches named to the midseason watch list for the Paul W. Bryant 2009 Coach of the Year award on Monday, the Bryant Awards committee of the Houston American Heart Association announced Monday.

Saban has guided the Crimson Tide to an 8-0 record this season and a No. 2 ranking in the latest BCS Standings, Associated Press and ESPN Coaches polls. The Crimson Tide has posted back-to-back 8-0 starts under Saban, marking the first time since the 1973-74 seasons the Tide has been undefeated after eight games in consecutive seasons.

Saban was the 2008 National Coach of the Year after leading Alabama to a 12-2 record and berth in the Sugar Bowl. He is 118-50-1 during his collegiate head coaching career, including a 27-8 mark with the Crimson Tide.

  1. I love my 2:30pm kicks. Perfect timing. I thought this was for sure going to be an ESPN primetime. I’ll take the CBS feed anyday over the late kicks.

This game coming up — in my opinion — is the hardest game on our schedule I circled before the season began (this excludes Atlanta) — let’s go offense!!!
