Second Chances: Tuberville or Franchione?

Sporting News columnists Matt Hayes and Dave Curtis explored the idea that certain coaches deserve second chances. Hayes argued former Alabama Crimson Tide football coach Dennis Franchione was worthy of a second chance. Curtis argued former Auburn Tiger coach Tommy Tuberville was worth another shot.

Hayes covers Franchione’s mistakes at A&M with the VIP newsletter, but concludes Franchione hasn’t done anything that would necessitate a long stay in the coaching wilderness.

Curtis defends Tuberville’s tenure on the Plains, but understands how the Tony Franklin fiasco doomed the coach. Curtis is blunt on Tuberville’s forced exodus from Auburn, “Of the 18 Division I-A coaches forced out in 2008, Tubs proved least deserving of unemployment. His teams won, his kids behaved (at least by SEC standards) and, between his openness with the media and his stint on the sport’s rules committee, emerged as one of the faces of college football.”

He is right. While there were reasons for Auburn to fire Tuberville, there were more reasons to keep him. Hindsight might be 20/20 (or 50/50 in Pat Dye’s case), but there is no way to say Auburn is better off today than it was under Tuberville. Isn’t that the way you judge a coaching change?

Alabama gained when it fired Mike Dubose. Alabama gained when it fired Mike Shula.

It is impossible to say Auburn upgraded when it fired Tuberville and hired Gene Chizik. Auburn regressed.

But as for second chances, both Tuberville and Franchione have drawbacks. Franchione is not ready for prime time. He is best suited for a program like Vanderbilt or Kentucky—programs where the spotlight does not shine so brightly. Tuberville needs an environment where he feels challenged and engaged. His biggest problem was complacency. He had achieved so much in his mind he had nothing else to prove.

  1. Tuberville achieved so much in his mind he had nothing left to prove??? One sec in fourteen years is sad. And before Julio starts spewing all of Tubs winning statistics, it is like the Aubs claim about our last season, all the wins and it got us nothing. So, all of Tubs wins in fourteen years and one sec is truly below average, he just couldn’t win the big one, I guess that is why he is unemployed now. One thing is for sure, had he not had his ass handed to him 36-0 he would still be there.

    RTR!

  2. BM, ask and ye shall receive racist little bammer. Tell me, how many SEC titles did Stallings win during his tenure at Bama? Just one? Gee, I could of sworn I remembered all the bammers boasting of his incredible winning average after his departure despite his lone SEC title. Oh wait, I know, he also won an NC that same year. Yeah, by going 13-0 and winning the Sugar Bowl. Hmmm, for some reason that sounds awfully familiar….

Cappy, I think Tubs will probably have a good choice of jobs next year if he doesn’t get too comfortable being a commentator. I’d say keep an eye on Virginia. If Al Groh doesn’t have a strong season next year, I think the consensus is that he will likely be gone. Tubs would be a perfect fit for that job, and I bet UVA would jump at the chance to get him.

  3. I have a friend at A&M and he wants Tuberville there…really wants him. Not sure if it would happen, but I think there are people out there who would like to land him if things continue to go so poorly.

I think UVA would be better for Tuberville than A&M. Easier conference. Less fanatical.

  4. Julio, you delusional jackass. Stallings was in the sec half the time Tubs was and yes won a NC, something Tubs could only watch big brother do. And like I said had he not had his ass handed to him 36-0 he would not be unemployed, now go back to your David Duke for president rally and stfu you peewee herman look-a-like.

  5. I liked Tubbs.. BM Tubbs Coulda beat uat 50 to 0 and HE WAS GONE!! he woulda went outa WINNER and had damn near his pick of HC jobs! Hate it or Love it but its true! AS far as your preciuos NC.s GO Joe Pa has been at Penn 43 years and has ONLY 2 NC and BB at FSU for 33 years has only 2 NC both in WEAKER conferences BOTH GREAT COACHES! OH yea Fuk Big Brother!

  6. BM, please don’t tell me that we’re no longer friends. If I thought you weren’t my friend anymore, I just don’t think I could bear it.

  7. Julio, we’ve never been friends, I don’t have any homo friends.

Omni, if you don’t think Tubs would still be at Aub had he beat us 36-0 you are more delusional than I thought.Your lover julio and I were discussing Tubs record, Ireally don’t care what JoePa and BB record is. And btw you don’t f with big brother because big brother will f you up.

  8. HAHAHAHAHA lets get this right IMO Tubbs was gone PERIOD. he was tired and done with AU kinda like an EX ya know! Hit that ass sometimes but there comes a day when your done! AND SISSY in my familia I AM BIG BROTHER!! and You dont want none of the LIL BROTHERS where I am from ROOKIE!

  9. So I guess BM is both a racist and a homo-phob. Oh well, at least he’s consistent. I guess he’ll enlighten us with some anti-semitic comments next.

julio, I dont get how someone can be a racist. But if Bama is a homophobe, well, then I can relate. Im scared to death of queers.

  11. Ballplay, I’m with you, I’m scared of julio also.

Omni, pipe down little medicated punk sissy boy and speak when I tell you that you can. Now shoo fly

HOLD IT!!!!!!!! I dont think julio swings that way. Im just saying I avoid hairdressers like the flu.

  13. You Auburn goobs here are pretty funny. Ya’ll are just so sensitive to everything. Especially Omni. You can tell when he doesn’t take his meds. It doesn’t take much to get you guys all in an uproar over nothing. If you want Barn slanted propaganda you guys probably won’t find it here. I think you guys just want to take out your frustrations on a Bama site, while it may momentarily make you feel better, it doesn’t change the cold hard reality of the situation at Bama and Auburn. And the beatings you all know that is coming.

  14. Thank you Brando, don’t stay away so long, I feel like I am on here defending our site from these obsessed wannabes by myself most of the time. They can’t stand it, they know what is coming, they are scared to death and they can’t stay away from big brothers site.

  15. You are right Bamaman. But who are we to deny these Auburn goobs the right to vent their frustrations on a Bama site? But is funny and kinda sad at the same time. Nah, just kidding. It is mostly just funny.
