ALABAMA FOOTBALL POSTGAME NOTES – ALABAMA vs. ARKANSAS

Alabama Football General Notes

GAME CAPTAINS: Alabama’s captains for tonight’s game against Arkansas are AJ McCarron, C.J. Mosley and John Fulton. The Crimson Tide won the coin toss and elected to receive the opening kickoff.

SERIES: Alabama leads the all-time series with Arkansas, 14-8 (18-7 before forfeited and vacated games), and has won seven straight in the series after tonight’s 52-0 shutout. The seven-game streak is the longest by either team in the series, and the Tide’s back-to-back shutouts in 2012 and 2013 are the only two in series history.

SHUTTING OUT SAME SEC FOE 2 YEARS STRAIGHT: Alabama’s shutout of Arkansas marked the second straight shutout of the Hogs by the Tide, duplicating a 52-0 victory last year in Fayetteville. It marks the first time since 1973-74 that Alabama has shutout the same SEC opponent in successive years, the last time coming in a pair of 35-0 wins over the Bulldogs in 1973-74. Similar streaks by Alabama also include a pair of four-year shutout streaks over Auburn (1959-62) and Mississippi State (1959-62).

Alabama Defensive Notes

FIRST HALF SHUTOUT: For the eighth time in its last 11 games, Alabama held its opponent scoreless in the first half. In addition to tonight’s game, the Crimson Tide shut out Kentucky (Oct. 19, 2013), Georgia State (Oct. 5, 2013), Ole Miss (Sept. 28, 2013), Colorado State (Sept. 21, 2013), Notre Dame (Jan. 7, 2013), Auburn (Nov. 24, 2012) and Western Carolina (Nov. 17, 2012) during the first two quarters of play.

10 POINTS OR FEWER: Under head coach Nick Saban, the Crimson Tide has held opponents to 10 points or fewer 46 times since the start of the 2007 season. Alabama has held 6-of-7 opponents to 10 points or less in 2013 after limiting seven of its opponents to 10 points or less in 2012, four of which were shutouts. The Tide was successful in holding opponents in the 0-10 point range in nine games in 2011 and eight times in 2010. Alabama limited opponents to that range seven times in both 2008 and 2009, and in 2007 posted two games in which it held opponents to 0-10 points. Alabama has shut out the opposition 12 times during the Saban era.

MOSLEY LEADS TIDE DEFENSE: C.J. Mosley, once again, led the Alabama defense, finishing with 10 total tackles. It was the seventh time in his career that he’s reached the 10 tackle milestone in a game. For the season, Mosley has 58 tackles with 4.5 tackles for loss, four quarterback hurries and three pass breakups.

HARD TO CONVERT: Alabama has allowed only 100 first downs thus far this season, including 16 in tonight’s win against Arkansas. Outside of the Texas A&M game, where the Crimson Tide allowed 31.0 percent (31 first downs) of their first downs this season, Alabama has surrendered just 69 in the remaining six games, an average of 11.5 per game.

Alabama offensive Notes

100-YARD RUSHING DUO: Kenyan Drake (104 yards) and Derrick Henry (111 yards) both eclipsed the 100-yard rushing milestone, marking the 17th time in Alabama history that a pair of Tide rushers has done so in the same game. It is also the fourth time in the last nine games it has occurred and the second consecutive game in which two Tide backs have done so. Last week at Kentucky, T.J. Yeldon and Drake also reached the 100-yard mark.

RUSHING TDs: For the 16th consecutive game, Alabama has recorded at least one rushing touchdown, and has had multiple scores on the ground in 14 of those 16 contests. The Crimson Tide finished tonight’s game with four touchdowns rushing – two from Kenyan Drake and one each from T.J. Yeldon and Derrick Henry.

RACKING UP THE YARDAGE: For the second consecutive game, Alabama eclipsed 500 yards of total offense, collecting 532 against the Razorbacks. The Crimson Tide had 668 in last weekend’s win at Kentucky. Alabama has now had consecutive 500-yard total offense games three times in the last two years (2012 at Missouri – 533 at Tennessee – 539; 2012 vs. Georgia – 512, Notre Dame – 529).

SCORING STREAK CONTINUES: With Jalston Fowler’s 4-yard touchdown reception in the first quarter, Alabama has scored in 163 consecutive games – the longest streak in program history.
