Alabama football star Julio Jones in Atlanta and Georgia football star A.J. Green in Cincinnati enter their sophomore seasons in the NFL. Who will have the better 2012 season in pro football?

Quick Synopsis: Pro Football Weekly expert Dan Parr said both former Alabama football star Julio Jones and former Georgia football star A.J. Green should have better sophomore seasons in the NFL. However, the former Alabama football player Julio Jones should see the bigger improvement.

Jones averaged 73.8 yards per game and 4.2 catches per game and scored eight touchdowns on the 2011 NFL season. A.J. Green caught 4.3 passes per game for an average of 70.5 yards per game with a total of seven touchdowns in 2011.

The big “if” is can Jones stay healthy, according to Arthur Arkush of PFW. Jones suffered a long list of injuries. Julio Jones had surgery on left shoulder in January 2009, hernia surgery in spring 2009, suffered a broken left hand in October 2010, had a fractured left foot in February 2011 and injured hamstring in October 2011.

The question for A.J. Green is “can he build on his numbers with less help” in Cincinnati? Arkush said A.J. Green could be “further along as a complete package than Julio Jones” as this season starts.

Both PFW experts believe Jones and Green will be impact players this year.

CNBC’s Darren Rovell knows the storyline of the night better than anyone. While fans were watching the NFL Draft, Rovell had one eye on Twitter and noticed an interesting trend that occurred right after the Miami Dolphins selected Texas A&M quarterback Ryan Tannehill. According to Rovell via Twitter, “In the first 10 minutes after Ryan Tannehill was selected, there were more than 800 tweets about his girlfriend. …Check that: Tannehill got married to her in January.”

So, I had to check Google.

It is obvious, Tannehill is a winner.

Tannehill married Lauren Ashley Ufer January 13, 2012. Lauren Ufer is also a model. Her vital stats from her modeling agency puts Ufer at 5’7” with blonde hair, green eyes, a 34B bust, 25 inch waste and 31 inch hips, a dress size of 0/2, and a 7.5 shoe size.
Trent Richardson, Mark Barron, Dre Kirkpatrick and Dont’a Hightower all hear their named called by the Commissioner (via UA Media Relations)

The University of Alabama equaled a school-record with four players selected in the first round of the 2012 National Football League Draft on Thursday evening at Radio City Music Hall.

For the second straight year an Alabama player came off the board at No. 3 when the Cleveland Browns traded up one spot to lay claim to Heisman Trophy finalist Trent Richardson. Two members of the Crimson Tide secondary were next with safety Mark Barron going to Tampa Bay at No. 7 and cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick going 17th to Cincinnati. Junior linebacker Dont’a Hightower then came off the board at No. 25 to the New England Patriots.

“It is very exciting for these guys,” Alabama head coach Nick Saban said. “But the first thing I remember is going into these guys’ houses when they were in high school or going to their high school to see them when they were juniors. I’m saying ‘that doesn’t seem like it was that long ago’ but the guy you met then and the man they are now – that is one of the great things about college football. To see these guys develop, grow and mature, personally, academically and athletically really makes you feel proud. And that is one of the things I love about college coaching.”

The four first-round selections tied the school record, equaling the mark of four set just last season when Marcell Dareus, Julio Jones, James Carpenter and Mark Ingram all went in round one. UA has now had 11 first-round picks during head coach Nick Saban’s tenure at Alabama and 10 in the past three years.

Richardson, a native of Pensacola, Fla., is the second Tide running back drafted in the first round in the last two years. The first-team unanimous All-American rushed for a school-record 1,679 yards and 21 touchdowns while catching 29 passes for 356 yards and three more scores.

“I don’t think it is surprising,” Saban said of Richardson going No. 3 overall. “The rumor was that Tampa Bay was trying to move up to three – that they were interested in him. Cleveland is a great franchise. I was there for four years. I know all of these guys from the south don’t want to go up north, but the Cleveland Browns and the people in Cleveland, they have a spirit like a high school team for the Cleveland Browns. Any player appreciates that and I think Trent will love it there. It is a great place to play sports.”

Barron, a native of Mobile, Ala., came back for his senior season in 2011 and helped lead Alabama to the team’s second national championship in the last three years. He became a two-time first-team All-American, earning unanimous honors in 2011. Barron made 68 tackles as a senior with five tackles for loss, two interceptions and five pass breakups.

“I thought Mark was one of the guys that everyone started to feel like, after these first five or six guys, this guy is the next best player in the draft,” Saban said. “He fits his position great and I’m really, really happy for Mark. I think Mark would have gone in the top 10 if he wasn’t picked here (at No. 7 by Tampa Bay). I know everyone was talking about Dallas at 14, but I just felt like Mark was going to get picked before that because he was one of the top six or seven players in this draft.”

Kirkpatrick, a native of Gadsden, Ala., went with the No. 17 overall selection by the Cincinnati Bengals. The cornerback was a two-year starter who had 40 tackles – 24 solo – as a junior in 2011. He broke up nine passes and finished with four tackles for loss.

The 25th pick saw Bill Belichick’s New England Patriots take the Tide’s stalwart linebacker Dont’a Hightower. He started 42 career games and made 234 career tackles. Hightower made a team and career-high 85 tackles in 2011 helping lead one of the best defensive units in college football history. He finished his redshirt junior season with 11 tackles for loss and four sacks.

The second and third round of the NFL Draft continues on Friday evening from Radio City Music hall in New York City with rounds 4-7 wrapping up the draft on Saturday. Courtney Upshaw was in New York for the draft and should hear his name called early in round two on Friday

Alabama safety Mark Barron is the top safety available int his year’s draft and should be a Top 15 pick, according to PFW. Barron is 6’1”, 213 lbs. with 4.54 speed. (Video not available on some mobile devices.)

According to PFW draft expert Nolan Nawrocki, “He is extremely physical in the box. That is his strength.”

According to PFW, Barron’s strengths include his instinct and ball awareness. He also “plays fast”, is a “strong tackler” and physically “looks the part” of an NFL safety.

He is “football smart,” according to the draft expert.

On the downside, Barron’s weaknesses include “man-coverage limitations, hip tightness, inconsistent ball reaction” and Barron is “not a center fielder.”

“Scouts compare (Barron) to Kam Chancellor of the Seattle Seahawks…(however), I think he has a little bit more value than Kam Chancellor,” according to Pro Football Weekly.

Barron is projected to be a Top 15 NFL Draft pick because of the “need at the position” this year. The floor would appear to be the New York Jets with the 16th pick in the 2012 draft.

The players discuss how Alabama football coaches tracked player production and errors. The video also looks at how intense Alabama practice sessions could be for the players.

“We were very competitive,” Kirkpatrick said. “If you weren’t competitive we would start the practice over.”

And this was one reason players came to Alabama, according to Hightower.

“This is one of the reasons we came to Alabama and the SEC was to compete against some of the best athletes in the country,” Hightower said.

According to PFW, “as many as seven Alabama” players on the 2011 defense could be taken in the NFL draft. The Alabama defense in 2011 was among the best to ever take the field at the Capstone and powered the Crimson Tide to the BCS National Championship.

Pro Football Weekly analyzed Tim Tebow’s performance in the Denver win over Miami. One big item standing out in a scouting view of the game—Tebow was much better out of the no huddle.

According to stats from the video you can watch in the above video player, Tebow was 45 percent completion percentage and 10.5 yards per completion out of the huddle and 60 percent completion percentage and 18.7 yards per completion out of the no huddle.

Speeding up the tempo is a key for Tebow.

Alabama fans saw Tebow in two consecutive SEC Championship Games. This gives you a unique perspective on Tebow. What do you think? Is Tebow going to win for Denver? Will speeding up the tempo of the Denver offense help the Broncos and Tebow?

Also, in the above player is a second video (Rookie Meter: Week 8 ) that looks at rookie performance in the NFL. Former Alabama football players Mark Ingram and Julio Jones are discussed.

Ingram was described as yet to get it going for the New Orleans Saints.

Jones has missed two games for the Atlanta Falcons. Jones remains one of the top two receivers taken in the draft with Georgia’s A.J. Green. According to the report, Julio Jones has important skills, but needs to be on the field and these injuries are a problem. “It was a problem we saw in college and a problem at the Combine,” according to the report.

With the NFL regular season now a quarter of the way through, the contenders are beginning to step forward. The Crimson Tide has a presence on teams like Green Bay, Houston, Buffalo, New England and Baltimore, who appear to be on their way to good seasons.

The ‘Bama highlight of the weekend had to be rookie Julio Jones with eleven…eleven…catches. There are good high school receivers that don’t catch eleven balls in one game. Julio is doing it in the NFL.

Another stat that jumps out at me is Mark Ingram’s 17 carries against Jacksonville. The effort only resulted in 55 yards, but 17 carries is a lot of trust from a coaching staff whose employment comes solely from wins and losses.

One concern was Kareem Jackson for Houston. He apparently tweaked a knee in practice last week and didn’t practice or play the rest of the week. We’ll keep an eye on that.

Here are the numbers for week four:

Arizona Cardinals (1-3) lost to NYG, 31-27
Rashaad Johnson, DB – no stats recorded

Atlanta Falcons (2-2) defeated SEA, 30-28
Julio Jones, WR – 11 catches for 127 yards (long of 45)
Mike Johnson, OL – listed as the backup at RG

Baltimore Ravens (3-1) defeated NYJ 34-17
Terrence Cody, NG – 2 tackles, 1 assist
Jarret Johnson, LB – 3 tackles

Buffalo Bills (3-1), lost to CIN, 23-20
Marcel Dareus, DE – 2 tackles, 2 assists, 1 sack

Cincinnati Bengals (2-2) – defeated BUF, 23-20
Andre Smith, OT – listed as the starter at RT

Green Bay Packers (4-0) defeated DEN, 49-23
Charlie Peprah, DB – 2 tackles, 1 assist, 1 INT

Houston Texans (3-1) defeated PIT, 17-10
Demeco Ryans, LB – 4 tackles
Kareem Jackson, CB – didn’t play (knee injury)
Antoine Caldwell, OL – listed as the back-up at RG

Kansas City Chiefs (1-3) defeated MIN, 22-17
Javier Arenas, DB – 2 PR, 18 yd. avg. (long of 21); 3 KOR, 23 yard avg. (long of 33).
Le’Ron McClain, FB – 1 carry for -2 yards, 1 catch for 7 yards
Wallace Gilberry, DE – no stats recorded

New England Patriots (3-1) defeated OAK, 31-19
Mark Anderson, DE – 1 tackle, 1 assist
Brandon Deaderick, DE – listed currently as physically unable to perform.

New Orleans Saints (3-1) defeated JAC, 23-10
Mark Ingram, RB – 17 carries for 55 yards (long of 8), 2 catches for 3 yards (long of 2)
Roman Harper, S – 5 tackles, 3 assists, 1 sack

New York Jets (2-2), lost to BAL, 34-17

Former Alabama football players Julio Jones and Mark Ingram are two names prominently mentioned as in the running for NFL Rookie of the Year. In this video from Pro Football Weekly, watch editors discuss which rookie players could make the biggest splash this season in the NFL. Other players mentioned include Patrick Peterson and Von Miller.

Editors think New Orleans Saints rookie Mark Ingram could have the best shot of winning the award because of the offense and the chances to carry the ball in for touchdowns. “Ingram could give them the chance to be a little more rugged on the ground,” one editor said. The ground attack could really make for a more balanced attack in New Orleans. He will “be a difference maker,” one said.

Atlanta Falcons receiver Julio Jones is also mentioned. One editor believes that Jones and Ingram play in the toughest division in football. It should be a fun battle when these teams play.

Another SEC player is mentioned in the discussion—former LSU cornerback and now Arizona corner Patrick Peterson. “I think he is going to step right in and start,” one editor said. “I think he is going to make an impact on defense and special teams” for the Arizona Cardinals.

Denver Bronco Von Miller is another name mentioned in this video discussion. His skill set should help the team. “He does everything right,” one editor in this discussion said. He already has three sacks in the preseason.

Aaron Rodgers of the Green Bay Packers is fresh off a Super Bowl win and is the talk of many experts in this video report. The PFW experts in this report say that Rodgers is consistent and puts up big numbers every week.

Another option could be Michael Vick. Yes, Michael Vick. Vick’s ability to run the ball and make plays will “get you a ton of points.”

Vick averaged 24.93 points per week in 2010 for fantasy football. Vick posted 21 touchdowns against six interceptions and nine rushing touchdowns.

What are you suggestions for this year’s fantasy football?

Thinking about who to select at running back for your fantasy football team? In this video, you can find a few hints about the top prospects to carry your team to success.

The PFW experts expressed interest in Adrian Peterson of the Minnesota Vikings. “He is the complete package and you know they are going to ride him heavily,” according to this report. Peterson posted a total of 240.90 points—second most among running backs, according to PFW report.

Another possibility is Arian Foster of the Houston Texans. Foster posted 328 total points, which was first among running backs. Is Foster a possible risk? A one-year wonder? Possibly, but there will be considerable interest in him, according to this video.

BASEBALL: Adam Morgan Drafted By Phillies in Third Round
Morgan first Crimson Tide player selected in 2011 MLB First Year Draft

Alabama junior left-handed pitcher Adam Morgan was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies with the 120th pick overall in the third round in the Major League Baseball draft on Tuesday afternoon. Morgan is the first Crimson Tide player to be selected in the 2011 draft.

In three years at Alabama, the Murietta, Ga. native has a 16-14 record in 47 appearances. This season, Morgan posted a 5-7 record with a 4.64 earned run average. He made 16 starts in 2011, throwing 97.0 innings with 77 strikeouts, 26 walks and a .278 opponent’s batting average.

“For any team to take me in the third round as their top three picks, it’s just amazing,” Adam Morgan said. “You work so hard all your life for this opportunity. I’m really excited that the Phillies picked me.”

During his junior campaign, Morgan posted 11 outings of at least 6.0 innings, which included a complete game against Tennessee on April 16. He was the starting pitcher for two of Alabama’s seven shutouts. He threw the first 5.1 innings in an 11-0 win over Alcorn State on Feb. 18 and the first 8.0 innings in a 4-0 win over LSU on May 7.

Additional players from the 2011 Alabama baseball team are expected to be drafted over the next two days. The MLB Draft continues through Wednesday with rounds 2-30 taking place on Tuesday and rounds 31-50 completing the draft on Wednesday. Complete coverage is available on MLB.com.

Taylor Dugas Drafted By Cubs in Eighth Round
Dugas selected with the 249th pick overall

Alabama junior centerfield Taylor Dugas (Lafayette, La.) was selected with the 249th pick overall by Chicago Cubs in the eighth round in the Major League Baseball draft Tuesday afternoon.

In three years at Alabama, the 2010 Baseball America All-American has a career batting average of .365, which is the seventh best in the history of the baseball program. After leading the team with a career-high eight home runs in 2011, Dugas has 12 dingers for his career. Dugas appeared in 186 games with 184 starts over three seasons, appearing in the starting lineup the last 137 consecutive games dating back to the 2009 season.

In 2011, Dugas was a Second Team All-SEC selection and was named to the conference’s all-defensive team after committing just two errors in 175 chances. He led the club in nearly every offensive category, including batting average (.349), hits (84), runs (60), walks (41), home runs (8), triples (4), slugging percentage (.564) and on-base percentage (.455).

Alabama senior right-handed pitcher Nathan Kilcrease (Phenix City, Ala.) was selected with the 916th pick overall by Oakland A’s in the 30th round in the 2011 Major League Baseball Draft Tuesday evening.

In four years at Alabama, Kilcrease set a school record with 88 appearances and posted a 23-11 overall record and a 3.21 career earned run average. His 23 career victories rank sixth all-time, while his 240 career strikeouts are seventh all-time at the Capstone.
This season, Kilcrease posted an 8-4 record and lead the team in wins, innings pitched (101.0) and strikeouts (88). He was named the SEC Pitcher of the Week after throwing a complete game five-hitter against No. 2 South Carolina. It was his second complete game of the season.
Kilcrease reached double digits in strikeouts three times during his final season, posting a career-high 10 strikeouts against Northwestern State on March 5, Arkansas on May 25 in the SEC Tournament, and against Central Florida in June 3 in the NCAA Tournament.

Kilcrease was the third player from the 2011 team to be selected on day two of the MLB Draft. Junior lefty Adam Morgan was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the third round (120th overall) and junior centerfield Taylor Dugas was an eighth round (249th overall) selection by the Chicago Cubs.

With the draft almost here fans are naturally curious about the NFL’s labor situation. Here are a couple of reports on the pro football league’s legal situation. One thing to note about the ruling (discussed in video #1 below) is that the judge ruled that ending the lockout was in the national interest since there are so many football fans. Also, the antitrust expert predicts a ruling from the Eight Circuit Court of Appeals sometime before or around the start of the preseason. In the second video below, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell explains that litigation will not solve the labor problems; he said a CBA is needed to address the issues.

While a federal judge put a stop to the NFL lockout on Monday, antitrust attorney Matthew Cantor says the league has legal options remaining. Cantor thinks that a settlement will ultimately be reached. He also said many things like the draft and a salary cap are under attack.
