Alabama Football Coach Nick Saban responds to questions about Texas Coaching Job

Alabama football coach Nick Saban was asked about the report that sometime last January that someone from Texas spoke to his agent about the University of Texas job currently held by legendary coach Mack Brown.

Could Alabama football coach Nick Saban go to Texas? Saban said he is 'too damn old' to start over.
Could Alabama football coach Nick Saban go to Texas? Saban said he is ‘too damn old’ to start over.
“Nothing went on that I know of,” Saban said in answer to Cecil Hurt’s question asked on the weekly Nick Saban Radio Show. “I don’t know about any of this stuff. I haven’t talked to anybody about that particular situation. They have a coach there that is a good friend of mine that I have a lot of respect for.”

Saban continued his response by pointing out this seems like a regular happening with the media linking him to another job.

“Every year it is something,” Alabama football coach Nick Saban said. “Last year it was the Cleveland Browns. There year before it was somebody else going back to the NFL. Terry and I are very happy here in Tuscaloosa. We love the University of Alabama. We really feel a part of the community here and we have a lot of good friends here.”

Then Saban summed up his present outlook on changing jobs.

“Quite frankly, you know, I am just too damn old to start over someplace else to be honest with you,” Saban said.

So, Alabama fans can thank Johnny Football and Texas A&M for Saban staying at Alabama. After all, it was Manziel who took 10 years off Saban’s life last week.

What do you think? Does Saban’s age play a role? What do you think about the report that Texas spoke to Saban earlier in the year?

  1. @Hate smurf coach, your on the article responding so obviously you care. Barner, don’t worry Saban is gonna hand out but whoopings yearly to the Barn.

  2. A small correction – Texas folk did not actually talk to Saban – they talked to his agent. In this case, that is an important distinction.

Did anyone else notice that Kevin Scaubinsky – in an article about this – managed to somehow work in a dig at the DJ Fluker thing? My guess is that ole Kev will still be working DJ Fluker into his story right after the BCS National Championship ceremony when Saban hoists the crystal ball in 2014 . . .

  3. Not to get immediately off-topic, but I’m more interested in the Browns sending Trent Richardson to the Colts for their first-round draft pick next freaking year.

Indy is clearly a better place for Trent, but the Browns are already dumping the entire 2013 season?

And for what? To me, it appears the Browns are going after Johnny Manziel. It’s kinda funny. But he’ll bring in money without having to win a single game. Think about it.

But this is exactly the kind of stuff that I think Saban lauds the NFL for fundamentally. That’s why I don’t buy into rumors (like with the Browns last year) of Saban coaching a pro team again.

Coaching another elite college football program makes a lot more sense, but I still don’t discount what Saban says about transfering even to a program like Texas. Texas takes its football seriously and has great historical success and tradition.

Forgive me if I sound like nothing more than a crimson-eyed homer here, but Alabama has more historical success, longer tradition, and a stronger comprehensive commitment to its football program from top to bottom, from the president to the athletic director to the assistant coaches to the students to the fans and even to the local government.

I just don’t think it should be such a surprise to people when Saban says he’s staying at Alabama, and it should therefore be even less of a surprise when each new season starts with Saban at the Capstone. Like Saban said, these rumors come up every year. I’m not sure there’s any way to stop them.

  4. Nicky Satan lied his ass off about leaving Miami for Bammer; lightning strikes twice and Saban goes to Texas!

    1. You said he was going to Cleveland last year, Suckhole. How did that work out? BTW, when’s Jon Gruden coming to Sucktown to coach the organge pukes? Leave it to a Suck fan to make the Neckburn fans look smart.

  5. Saban will not leave bama…..UNLESS the NCAA really goes after bama and starts finding all the talk is true. Him being ” too damn old ” applies to rebuilding a program that the NCAA tears down also. If nothing comes out of the fluker , phillips, davis gang story … saban retires at bama.

    1. All the talk is that Alabama didn’t know anyway, right?

I don’t get it. I don’t understand the hate. I get it from LSU fans at least for Saban leaving them and now winning so many titles at Alabama.

      But good grief.

  6. The news coming out about foster being paid while he was at Tenn. is not good for bama either. Last thing bama wants is for one of the other schools that are tied to the Fluker story to keep drawing the attention of the NCAA. If Tennessee gets investigated then bama will be right there with them. Im sure saban and company are on the phone with MSU and Tenn tell them to chill the f**k out until this blows over…..they hope. Oh love how saban has decided to sit yeldon for the 1st qtr Vs. that high school team they are playing this weekend. If saban really cared about team discipline he would have sit Yeldon the rest of the Texas A&M game THEN the 1st qtr of the CSU game.
