Alabama Football Announces Hiring of Mario Cristobal
University of Alabama head coach Nick Saban announced Wednesday the hiring of Mario Cristobal as Alabama’s offensive line coach and assistant head coach. Cristobal takes over for Jeff Stoutland, who was hired by the Philadelphia Eagles on February 8.

“We are very pleased to announce the addition of Mario Cristobal to our staff,” said Saban. “He has an outstanding reputation as both a coach and a recruiter. He will be a great fit in our organization and I think our players will respond to his positive attitude and energy. This is a very important hire in terms of working with our offensive line and we feel fortunate that we were able to hire a coach of Mario’s caliber. We want to welcome Mario and his family to the University of Alabama and we are excited to have them here.”

Cristobal spent the last six seasons (2007-12) as head coach at Florida International University. He led the Panthers to the 2010 Sun Belt Conference title and their first bowl appearance, a victory in the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl over Toledo. He was the 2010 Sun Belt Coach of the Year and also guided FIU to a bowl appearance in 2011 (Beef O’Brady’s St. Petersburg Bowl). He most recently joined Miami’s staff on January 10, 2013, where he served as associate head coach and tight ends coach.

“I want to thank Coach Saban and everyone here at the University of Alabama for this incredible opportunity,” said Cristobal.

Before taking over as the head coach at FIU, Cristobal was an assistant at Miami for three seasons (2004-06). He was the tight ends coach the first two seasons and offensive line coach in 2006. His first full-time coaching position was as an assistant at Rutgers, where he coached tight ends and offensive line from 2001-03. From 1998-2000, Cristobal was a graduate assistant on the Miami Hurricanes staff.

Cristobal was a four-year letterwinner for the University of Miami from 1988-92, playing for Hall of Fame coach Jimmy Johnson and Dennis Erickson. During his four years at UM, the Hurricanes won a pair of National Championships (1989 and 1991) while playing in two Sugar Bowls, one Cotton Bowl and an Orange Bowl. Cristobal was a first team All-Big East selection as an offensive tackle in 1992.

Following his college playing career, Cristobal signed a free agent contract with the Denver Broncos in 1994. He played for the Amsterdam Admirals of NFL Europe in 1995 and 1996.
The Miami native was a prep standout at Christopher Columbus High School. He graduated from Miami in 1993 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration and later earned a master’s degree from UM in 2001.

Cristobal and his wife Jessica were married in June of 2006 and have two sons (Mario, Jr. and Rocco).

  1. You gonna do a story on the drug bust that netted about 100 people at the University of Alabama? Ill post the link for you.

    http://www.wtvy.com/news/headlines/99-Arrested-in-University-of-Alabama-Drug-Bust-191909811.html

Seems to be a lot going on out there this year. Players using performance enhancing drugs, Players robbing and beating students, using stolen credit cards. And now we see what the players were probably trying to steal; Drugs! Seems its highly popular with the students at this FINE University. Keep it up guys. We enjoy the laughs.

    1. You need to get out more often Sidvicious. Drugs are not isolated to the Tuscaloosa area. Three felony arrests of football players in 6 years is less than whatever team you pull for I’m sure. As far as deer antler spray goes, it’s impossible to administer it orally. A few players were duped by a snake oil salesman. When the NCAA comes calling, let us know.

    2. Deflect all you want, Sid. The roundup in Tuscaloosa was only partially made up of students. Mostly it was locals who prey on students to keep them in business during the school year.
And, although we are all familiar with the 4 football players who were arrested – what, 2 weeks ago? – I don’t think I’ve seen any stories involving the myriad other subjects you’ve decided to pull out of your azz for this post. If you’re going to link one of them, let’s link them all, OK? Otherwise, you just appear to be yet another pathetic-loser Bama-wannabe who managed to push his old lady away from her desktop at the AU Kinkos to post more moronic dribblings from your jelly mind.

      1. “I don’t think I’ve seen any stories involving the myriad other subjects you’ve decided to pull out of your azz for this post.”

You haven’t seen the story on the performance enhancing drugs? Everything in my post happened. Players beating and robbing students, using stolen cards, massive drug busts across the campus. And this is just the tip of the iceberg. There’s more coming out by the day. Gonna be a long spring and summer for Alabama fans.

        1. Don’t hold your breath waiting. Evidently your team can’t get it done on the field, so your off season is spent on hoping Bama gets in trouble or something so your team has a chance. Saban has done a great job so far, and any issues that come up will be dealt with, as he has already shown. Sure, there are 3 players that have lost their spots. But all Saban has is a bunch of 4 and 5 star recruits that will take their place. The deer spray story is over, and nothing will come out of it. The drug busts did not involve any football players, so I don’t know what you are trying to imply with that.

But my point is, your posts reek of jealousy and spite. But you keep on hoping and praying, Bama won’t stop until Saban stops. The winning won’t last forever, but for the near future your only hope is bad things happening in the off season. And it makes you look like a sad little troll when you come here to post about it.

    3. Yeah I guess we’ll just have to live with it! but I’ll just bet that you think the school you root for doesn’t have any problems like that… RTR

  2. @Dumb V. Who were you in the past? Truth or Mr. Flash? Do tell. Or even that dummy from from White County in Tennessee, IV in the head. RTR
