Phillip Marshall compares Auburn to Miami football program that NCAA said exhibited a “significant lack of institutional control.”

Auburn has a serious public relations problem. The school cheated—according to damning allegations reported by HBO Real Sports. The NCAA continues to probe Auburn’s recruiting practices ranging from Cam Newton to Big Cat Weekend to Tiger Prowl. The investigation unfolded throughout SEC country as NCAA investigators have visited South Florida, Louisiana, Georgia, Mississippi and Arkansas to examine Auburn’s recruiting conduct.

How does Auburn respond to it?

Arrogance.

The mouthpiece of Auburn is Phillip Marshall. You remember him salivating all over Tommy Tuberville. He continues his role as defender of the faithful with a blog on an Auburn recruiting website telling Auburn fans to embrace the culture of cheating.

Of course, Marshall doesn’t call it a culture of systemic cheating, but that is what he really means when he compares Auburn to the Miami Hurricanes of the 1980s and 1990s. Does anyone remember what the NCAA did to the Hurricanes?

In case you forgot, the NCAA said the University of Miami exhibited “significant lack of institutional control.” (SEE: the Sun Sentinel).

Ouch.

It looks like a good comparison to Auburn.

But maybe even Auburn’s greatest apologist is getting closer to admitting something bad is going on in the Auburn program. He attempts to reach for the judgment of history as a covering for NCAA infractions.

He declares, “Those Miami teams were widely despised. What did they do? They thrived on their outlaw image. It drove them to play harder, win bigger. And they are remembered today a lot more fondly than they were viewed then.”

In the end for Phillip Marshall and Auburn, cheating doesn’t matter if you win. History will judge you, and victory will make you look better than being a loser.

What a sad lesson. Revisionist history at its best.

Is this what Auburn football fans want?

  1. I have a friend who will not even allow his teenage daughter to go to Auburn anymore, nor allow his son to cheer for Auburn. His son was having problems understanding Chizik’s view of Christianity with all the contradicting evidence. It’s difficult to explain the Chizik mindset to a teenager in these days and tines. How do Auburn parents explain how great someone like Scam Newton or Eric Smith is after they get their autograph on Fan Day only to see them on a police blotter later?

  2. awbrun of today and Miami of old are hated for completely different reasons. the boogcult strategy won;t work, they are going to keep on and the NCAA will slap them almost as hard as they did SMU

  3. The only thing significant Marshall is up to these days is about 450 pouinds. I have no respect for Miami either.

  4. I agree. The Miami teams of the ’80’s were CONSITENTLY dominant over everyone, not just teams crippled with probation and horrible coaching (Shula years 2003-07 including Saban’s 1st yr). Miami teams in the ’80’s were not 1 man teams either even when Testaverde was QB. Phillip Marshall has always participated in revisionist history. His father would roll over in his grave

  5. Did Marshall not hear it straight from the NCAA enforcer’s mouth? “We will let you know when the investigation is over.” Then he calls the NYT article innuendo. The gall of some people is beyond me.

  6. An Auburn fan just called into JOX’s Dunaway afternoon show and said he considers the investigation over because the Destin meeting where Chizik was bitch slapped was in May and Rich McGlenn and Phillip Marshall said it was over in July. You can’t teach stupid, but my source AND Danny Sheridan and MOST IMPORTAnTLY THE ENFOREMENT arm of the NCAA says it’s ongoing

  7. Marshall:

    ***

    They are? By who?

All I remember was they were a bunch of thugs and Alabama wiped them out in the Sugar Bowl 34-13 and won a National Championship.

  8. 34-13

    …and it wasn’t that close.

It was one of the most humiliating and embarassing defeats of a No. 1 team I have ever seen.

Even more so because of the ‘attitude’ displayed before the game.

So go ahead Auburn…act like Miami.

  9. It is hilarious that this Auburn goon wants to embrace that thug mindset. Please do. Chizik embarassing himself in front of all the other coaches like that is not rumor or speculation. He was slapped hard with the facts, and in true Auburn fashion, the Cult Members are working hard at spinning this into a good thing. He is right, Auburn is becoming one of the most despised programs in America. The Auburn Cult thinks it is only because they won. They think they are untouchable, and there is no way the NCAA finds anything wrong with their program. Even Chizik seems to be the last one to know that the investigations are real. How dumb. No one is afraid of playing Auburn, on the contrary, everyone on Auburns schedule is looking forward to beating them down this season. I just hate that we are last in line.

  10. 34-13…Miami has never been the same since. I always considered them a “flash in the pan”, like so many others like them. Go ahead auburn…be a “pop” culture feature instead of an enduring legacy.

  11. Miami had won several National Championships, Jimmy Johnson built the program up, and the thug mentality really come on strong under Erickson. The worse their image got, the more rules they broke, and it cost them in the end. Auburn can’t come close to comparing Miamis success on the field, and comparing 1 fluke season to that is a joke.

Auburn really is going to have their ‘come to Jesus’ moment when this is all done. Aubie wearing preacher robes, while players playing dirty, dirty recruiting practices, coaches paying players, and the entire fanbase with their heads stuck in the sand. This is going to be really fun to watch unfold. And everyone is still going to hate you when you are punished.

  12. That is indeed poor advice from Marshall. I don’t know any Auburn fans that will embrace that Miami attitude.

Gene should not have challenged the NCAA VP in that forum. Getting frustrated when you know you are innocent is fine. There are times and places for everything.

  13. It was a total slaughter of an over swaggering Miami team all topped off with the “Run Down” of supposedly the nations fastest man. But the honor of the most humiliating defeat in a national championship game goes to Florida who was incinerated and vaporized by Nebraska something like 65 or 70 to 7. Bwaa Haww Haww! RTR!
