According to Tidesports.com and Bama Online, Alabama Crimson Tide freshman running back Dee Hart suffered a knee injury during a 7-on-7 football drill. According to the Orlando Sentinel (via Daily Bama Blog), “Hart is scheduled to have surgery at 8 a.m. on Thursday and will begin rehab immediately on Friday.” This could create a much thinner situation at running back than anticipated for Alabama’s 2011 football campaign.

According to Tidesports, “If Hart’s injury is of a serious nature and he were to miss the 2011 season, the Crimson Tide would be left with only three scholarship running backs. Trent Richardson is Alabama’s only returning running back with significant experience. Reserve Eddie Lacy saw limited action last season, while sophomore Jalston Fowler played even less than Lacy. UA had six scholarship running backs on hand for spring drills, but has since lost Demetrius Goode (transfer to North Alabama) and Corey Grant (transfer to Auburn).”

One more item from the Sentinel’s report: “”He’s good, you know Dee,” said Dee Hart’s high school coach. “If that had to happen to any of our kids, that’s who I’d rather it happened to because he has the right mindset. The trainer told him ‘ok, you have surgery on Thursday and can start rehab next week’ and Dee said ‘what about Friday?'”

  1. Is it too late to ask Grant to come back? Well hate to say it But Mr Hart will get cut for this injury.

  2. Dee’s gonna be missed but depth may not be as big a problem as some might think.
Trent and Lacey are the unquestioned #1 & #2 RBs right now.
Jalston Fowler = 14 carries for 111 yds. I hope they give it to him 14 times a game.
Blake Sims has been pegged to be the Tide’s wildcat QB, which has always primarily been a running back anyway, so no problem there if he runs the ball too.
And Bama’s supposed to give Calloway a shot at RB so we’ll see how that works out.
My biggest concern is the severity of Dee’s injury and how he recuperates.
A guy named Kerry Goode was virtually unstoppable for Bama nearly 30 years ago…until he tore up a knee returning a kickoff against Boston College.
Never was nearly as good after the surgery.
Surgical procedures have vastly improved since then, but half of coming back from knee surgery is still mental.
Good to hear Dee’s HS coach says he has the right kind of attitude.
