Alabama Basketball: Coach Anthony Grant talks offseason & new SEC basketball schedule

Alabama Crimson Tide basketball coach Anthony Grant talked about his team and the offseason. You can listen to Coach Grant in the player below. Here are some highlights of the Alabama coach’s comments.

Highlights:
Players are in summer school and doing the things necessary to get ready for the season, Grant said.

“We are excited about the guys we have coming back,” Grant said. These include Forward JaMychal Green, Forward Tony Mitchell, Guard Trevor Releford, Guard Ben Eblen, and Guard/Forward Charles Hankerson.

“New crop of guys” will get acclimated in the Fall.

Andrew Steele’s departure due to health reasons was mentioned. Grant said Steele would be missed.

Team USA tryouts for Green and Mitchell is “great opportunity for them.”

Grant spoke about move toward one division for the SEC basketball league. Grant said later in summer to expect discussions on the number of conference games. Grant said his position is to listen to his colleagues about 16 and 18 game schedules. “I’m interested to see what my peers think,” Grant said.

Grant said the team should continue to build its non-conference schedule regardless of a 16 or 18-game conference schedule. He said the challenge is important in the “landscape of college basketball.” An 18-game schedule would mean more quality opponents, but it could hamper the dates available for “quality” non-conference opponents.

Grant talked about Mike Anderson coming to Arkansas. “He is a quality coach and will do a great job at Arkansas,” Grant said.

Me thinks the ‘Bama/Arkansas rivalry is about to get cranked up again.

In the pre-conference we play Kansas St., Oklahoma St., at Dayton, at Ga. Tech, (somebody needs to tell Grant we don’t like the Wreck so much) Georgetown and we’re in the Puerto Rico Classic w/ Maryland, Purdue, Wichita St., Colorado, Temple and others.

    Geez Louise Coach!

And don’t we have a return to Rupp this season. Holy crap!

  2. Nah, we’ve already got the Barnturds on our schedule twice. There’s a limit as to how much welfare we can afford to give. gotta keep up that SOS. Bwaa Haww Haww! RTR!

  3. My prayers are with his family. I have told my wife many times that I don’t think that I could recover if one of my children died before me. GOD bless his family.
