Tennessee athletic director Mike Hamilton was worth every penny—to Alabama fans. Hamilton has undermined the entire Volunteer athletic department. While that might not be a great thing for the Southeastern Conference (SEC), it sure is a good thing for fans who loathe the Tennessee Volunteers.
Some Tennessee fans are irate over the hiring of Cuonzo Martin.
Why? This is about as good as Tennessee could get given the mess in Knoxville. The entire men’s athletic department is a comedy of compliance, or actually, non-compliance. Lane Kiffin and Bruce Pearl. Fans should also remember all the off-the-field legal troubles afflicting the Volunteer men’s programs. Some problems are to be expected, but the culture in Knoxville seems unhealthy. That is a result of leadership.
Tennessee can kill two birds with one stone—repair the leadership problem and atone for its sins with the NCAA. Tennessee could fire Mike Hamilton and hire Phil Fulmer. Everyone appreciates Fulmer’s NCAA record. He’ll make sure the Volunteers walk the straight and narrow of NCAA compliance.
Alabama spring practice and recruiting
For recruiting fans, we should get to some news for the 2013 recruiting class. Yes, 2013. If you aren’t already paying attention to 2013 then you aren’t really interested in recruiting. According to 247sports, the Alabama Crimson Tide is in good shape with one of the certain stars of the 2013 class. In fact, the site declares Alabama is the team to beat. According to the report Reuben Foster said, “I’ve always liked Alabama. They were my favorite growing up. My family are Alabama fans.” Foster is 6’1”, 220 lbs. and described as “uber-athletic, hard-hitting playmaker” at his linebacker position.
Alabama’s QB situation
Alabama fans are feeling lucky to have such depth at the quarterback position. As running back Trent Richardson said last week, these guys have the talent to play anywhere. The quarterbacks with the best chance to win the job are likely AJ McCarron and Phillip Sims. While both quarterbacks clearly have talent to make Alabama’s offense more dynamic with a substantial vertical threat—provided receivers run the right routes and the offensive line blocks—there are things to worry about for the offense. There is no substitute for experience in both the quarterback and the offensive line. You can never predict health on the offensive line, but fielding a unit that stays healthy will be important to helping a young quarterback grow into the starting position.
And it might help the running game too. That would also help the young quarterback—whoever it turns out to be.
