In probably the biggest win of the Anthony Grant era in Tuscaloosa, the University of Alabama men’s basketball defeated the SEC’s most decorated team, the No. 14 ranked Kentucky Wildcats.

It was a familiar script as the Tide jumped out to a big lead, then struggled to hold on in the end. That script didn’t work out so well at Arkansas last Saturday, but it worked just fine Tuesday night at Coleman Coliseum with Brad Nessler and the gang from ESPN looking on.

“It’s probably an understatement to say it’s a great win for our team,” Grant said. “I’m proud of our guys. They hung in there, and got the stops at the end that we needed to win the game.

JaMychal Green led all scorers with 18 points with teammate Tony Mitchell adding 15.

Alabama jumped out to a 45-30 lead with 17:15 to go in the second half, and would lead by as much as 20. But there is a reason Kentucky Wildcats coach John Calipari is John Calipari. Kentucky would pull within one in the game’s final minute.

The Wildcats had a chance to take the lead for good in the game’s final possession, but Bama’s Charvez Davis caused what would be the game winning turnover as Ben Eblen recovered, was fouled and split a pair of free throws. A Kentucky mid-court runner at the buzzer was way off.

Alabama improved to 3-1 in conference play with the win and head to Auburn Saturday for a 4:00pm tip in their new barn.
