According to UA Media Relations, Alabama head coach Nick Saban announced today the hiring of Chris Rumph who will serve as defensive line coach at the University of Alabama in place of the departed Bo Davis. Rumph, a four-year letterman during his playing days at South Carolina, joins Alabama’s coaching staff after five years as the defensive ends coach at Clemson.

While at Clemson, Rumph was heavily involved in the recruitment of defensive sensation Jadeveon Clowney out of Rock Hill, SC. Alabama has been heavily recruiting the freak defensive end and is considered a leader for his services. Unless Milton McGregor decides that Clowney can be a winner too.

One area needing desperate attention has been the Tide’s defensive line. Despite an impressive performance in the Captial One Bowl, in 2010 the Tide’s front four struggled to put pressure on opposing backfields by itself, leading to blitz packages that left a young secondary on an island.

The hiring of Rumph is a great thing for Alabama as the Crimson Tide prepares for 2011.

  2. I’ve been out of pocket for a couple of weeks. Where the hell did Davis go anyway? It will be great if the rest of the staff remains intact. Pitt will not take Sunseri and that’s very good cause that could cause us to lose 2 signees.
