You have heard the old joke that says, “My favorite two college football teams are Alabama and whoever is playing Auburn.” This joke, like pretty much any other Alabama / Auburn joke can be easily turned around.

It is not difficult to find fans in these parts that love their team and their team only, and when it comes to the other school, there is simply no love lost.

Will things be different on January 10, 2011? Will those die-hard Bama fans who scream roll tide even after the national anthem is played at their child’s piano recital, who have houndstooth hats, shirts, gloves, boxers, and shower curtains, who’s car horn plays “Yea, Alabama,” and who would cross the street in front of on-coming traffic to avoid speaking to a little old lady in an Auburn t-shirt – will these fans somehow find it in their heart to pull for the Tigers in the national championship game?

Let’s think about it for a minute.

I know both Alabama and Auburn fans that would never pull for Tennessee if they were to find their way into the national title game. Others would pull for the Vols simply because of their ties to the SEC.

But that is Tennessee. We are talking about Alabama and Auburn, without a doubt the most intense rivalry in all of college football.

The circumstances, however, and the results, should Auburn come away victorious, will likely never happen again in our lifetime.

Last year, Alabama ran the table. They went undefeated in the SEC, undefeated in the regular season, beat the Gators in the SEC championship, and finished off their national championship season with a 37-21 win over Texas.

On top of that, Mark Ingram won the school’s first Heisman Trophy. The millions that Alabama invested in Coach Nick Saban paid off in only his third season.

Fast forward one year later, and now the Auburn Tigers are in the same situation.

An undefeated season, undefeated in the SEC, SEC champs, another Heisman Trophy winner, and the opportunity to win the national championship with a victory over the Ducks.

Back-to-back national championships and back-to-back Heisman winners? Seriously?

Not only does this speak volumes for the continued dominance of the SEC, but what does it say about our state?

On a typical Friday night in the Fall, you do not have to drive very far to find a high school stadium with a future Tide or Tiger player finishing up his high school career, getting ready to move on to bigger and better things.

We have quality programs in this state and it is exemplified by what we are now seeing in Tuscaloosa and on the Plains.

I know it will be difficult for true Alabama fans to pull for the Tigers, but do we really want the SEC reign to end? Do we not want to see back-to-back championships to come to our state where we now have back-to-back Heisman winners?

More importantly, do we really want the trophy to go to Oregon?

Pull up a chair at any sports bar in the state, come January 10, and no doubt, this question will be answered.

  19. As an Auburn fan, I root Auburn, SEC West, and then SEC, which means I rooted for the Tide without hesitation last year against Texas and would do so again in a heartbeat under the same circumstances.

    If the comments posted thus far on this article are reflective of the Bama fanbase as a whole, it’s sad to see the shallow depth of the Bama faithful.

    Julio and Mark accepted benefits (i.e., fishing trip) while at UA. Darius accepted benefits (i.e., agent party) while at UA. Cam did not accept any benefits, and the allegations did not involve AU. If you can’t see the difference, you need to either take off your blinders or take some extra courses at Kaplan.

  44. The only references I need to know about Cam is only the facts:

    1. Kicked off the UF team for stealing a laptop. Was arrested for it.
    2. Prior to transferring to Blinn College, was being investigated for academic fraud. (Which is ironic, because of Auburn’s history with that)
    3. His Dad openly admitted to shopping him around after lying about it to everyone first. He told Miss. St. “It will take more than a scholarship for Mullen to get his son”

    So, all Cam has to say is “I didn’t know what my dad was up to” but when he was being recruited from Blinn, he told everyone he was going to school where his dad wanted him to go. A Mississippi State coach said that an emotional Cam Newton called and informed him that he would not be going to State, that the ‘money was too great at Auburn’. But they took a known liar and a thief’s word over what a coach said. What would have happened IF Cam said he knew? We all know the answer to that one.

    But it won’t happen again. They are not changing the rule, but clarifying that even a parent can be considered acting as an agent. Even though the rules say “anyone”.

  45. BP* the deference is that Bama sat every player, without question. Auburn gambled and did not. Sure the NCAA cleared him, based on Cam saying he didn’t know what his dad was doing. But the NCAA is having an emergency session to clarify the rule. Look, just admit the truth… Auburn was fortunate that it turned out the way it did. Trying to justify all the lying and all makes you look stupid. Just man up, admit that Cam’s dad almost cost him big time. I am not accusing Auburn of anything.   49. This is in response to the normally reasonable BPI. In the 2009 season Bama played 10 bowl teams, after playing Oregon, Auburn will have played 10 bowl teams this season. Bama defeated 3 top 10 teams all by double digits. After playing Oregon Auburn will have played 2 teams currently in the top 10 and #11 LSU. Auburn beat Arkansas by double digits and LSU by 7. Alabama beat Tenn. by 2 points and Auburn by 5, every other team was beaten by more than 1 score. Auburn beat MSU by 3, Clemson by 3 in OT, SC by 8, Kentucky by 3, LSU by 7 and Alabama by 1. Both teams played 3 bowl teams on the road Alabama also played #10 VT in Atlanta. Bama faced 13-0 Florida and Tim Tebow in the SEC Championship. Auburn faced 9-3 SC and Steven Garcia. Alabama finished their season playing traditional powerhouse Texas in the Rose Bowl, Auburn will finish their season Playing Oregon (team Nike/ugly uniform) in the Tostido’s Nouveau Riche Bowl.

    Auburn quarterback Cam Newton was facing possible expulsion from the University of Florida for academic cheating when he transferred to junior college in the spring of 2009, FoxSports.com reported Monday.

    Newton turned in a second paper to the instructor, but that paper was later found to have been purchased off the Internet, according to FoxSports.com. He was to appear for a hearing in front of Florida’s Student Conduct Committee during the spring semester of 2009 but instead transferred to Blinn College.

  172. I have been watching Auburns recruiting BP*, along with the rest of the SEC. How many 5 star players has Auburn gotten in on again? Tuberville is out recruiting Auburn right now. And ya’ll blamed him for not recruiting good enough. We will see in the end. Auburn is not keeping up with Bama in recruiting so far. Not by a long shot. This could be Sabans best haul so far. I know with Jesse Williams already enrolled, and Quinton Dial, the defense and pas rush will be dramatically improved from this season. But Auburns recruiting is not where you think it is compared to the rest of the SEC. Auburn might get in the top 15 when it is over, and that would require a lot of switches with commitments which obviously you are banking on. Maybe if Auburn can match Cams salary, they will have a shot.

But Auburn had the combination of experience, and lucked up and got a player like Cam, everything come together for this one year for Auburn. Bama has been on a two year run of players who have know nothing but success. Now that they have been knocked off the hill, so to speak, look for them to be a little more hungry next season. Lots of young talent, but the secondary was a concern coming into the season. Look that up. I have made no excuses. Bama will have pretty much the same team coming back next year, with a few upgrades and of course a year more experience, and 9-3 wasn’t a bad year. But they have the more favorable home schedule next season, and drop SC. I am not complaining a bit. I think the future is very bright for Bama. I said there were high expecatations for this season, and this team fell short of them. I have every reason to think this team will mature and be a better team next season. To still come out 9-3 is pretty good. Not great, but a good year other than the loss to Auburn. I am sure that game is going to leave a bad taste in their mouth. So when the beatings begin next year, remember I told you so. When that first loss stings you, just remember ol Brando here will be laughing his ass off at you guys.     What makes me scratch my head most of all is the perception that Alabama fans such as yourself have that Auburn doesn’t know what it’s like to go undefeated. We went undefeated 6 years ago, and then 11 years before that. IT’s not that uncommon.

    I con’t disagree with you Brandi*, Bama had some key injuries. But, that is where the “qulaity depth” arguement is supposed to come in. You aren’t as deep as you think, and youor overall record is the proof of that. Injuries will show you real quick how deep you are.

    And let’s not forget that Auburn lost a starting lineman to a broken leg in the Miss. State game. Lost him for the whole season. We had a JUCO transfer step in and never missed a beat. Rivals rankings don’t always mean quality depth.

    Bama had three offensive linemen go down, and they shuffled around and never got the consistency you would get. Here read this:

    Shuffling linemen was new to Alabama, which didn’t deal with a significant injury when it won a national championship last season. The Tide used the same five starters in every game.

    The injuries showed in Alabama’s running results. The Tide averaged almost 230 yards rushing in its first five games before Fluker’s injury. Over the last seven, which included a 262-yard game against Georgia State, Alabama averaged barely 136.

    “That should definitely help,” Jones said. “If we do our job, we definitely should have a great chance to win the bowl game.”

    I am not making it up and it is no excuse. But playing a different offensive line combination each week hurt the running game. But they still managed to score points and win 9 games. They were in every game they lost. They had a good season. Every indication is there that they will be improved in a lot of areas next season. Enough to go undefeated? Don’t know, but I like Bama’s chances as well as anyone else’s. They get the favorable home schedule next season.

    And about the rankings, I would say Saban has been a pretty good evaluator of talent. More times than not he improves his players from where they are. Look at Arenas, Cody, Rolando, Eric Andyers. They all dramatically improved each season under Saban. I think Saban is still one of the best developers of talent in college. Just because they didn’t happen to go through the regular season undefeated 3 years in a row doesn’t mean they are down and out from now on. I think Saban has Bama in a great position to be competitive and one of the top teams to beat in the SEC. And he is consistently recruiting at a high level. It is laughable that he has a 3 loss season and all the sudden every Auburn fan thinks his career is over.

They still did okay, but they would have done better with all of the starters in every game. They have good players coming up, but they didn’t have much game experience.

    The whole offense isn’t gone. McKelroy, Preston Dial, and Carpenter are the only senior players off of offense. Julio is leaning towards coming back, Richardson will be back. Ingram may be back. Dareus may be the only defensive junior to go. If Barron stays, the entire secondary will be back. Overall, Bama isn’t losing much. McCarron will be in his third year next season, not like he will be a true freshman starting.

    But Auburn will be replacing WAY more than Bama next season, and the schedule gets tougher for you next season. Any sane person can see what the odds that Bama gets better, and Auburn gets worse.

    But look, I don’t have to explain it to you. You will see for yourself. I’m so sorry that you can’t read and comprehend very well. You must actually have a degree from Auburn.

    What is funny is Auburn barely won half their schedule, could have very easily lost 5-6 games this year. Then, I tell you that there was no excuse for you not being 2 – 3 deep ant every position because of the Almighty Sabans last 3-4 recruiting classes being in the top three every year ( we won’t even get into the oversigning issue). I then say there was no excuse for Bama to have lost due to depth or injury. what doesn’t make sense about that ?

    Are you trying to tell me that Auburn is deeper than Bama this year ? Heck no they are not. Auburn had 72 players on scholarship when Tubberville left. That’s right……72…….Explain again to me how there is any way possible for Bama to be thineer at ANY POSITION than Auburn. Or, how injury would play ANY EFFECT in the outcome of the Iron Bowl ?

    It can’t , It didn’t, and if you say anything to the contrary, you’re crazy.

    About next year….I think Ingram and Julio are gone. Another year splittin carries with Richardson can’t help Ingram’s status, and Julio wil be upper first round this year…With McCarron being the starter, he isn’t goonna get a lot of good passes thrown his way ( see Iron Bowl)…Your entire backfield will be gone save Richardson. Your best reciever will be gone. Your best defensive lineman will be gone.

    Auburn will lose a lot no doubt. Out offfensive line has some pretty good backups coming in, but not what we have now. Not worried about wideouts or running back. Cam will be gone. Than will hurt.

    Bottom line : there was no reason for depth to be an issue at Alabama this year.

    Saban has recruited well, and has had a pretty good run so far. The depth was developed this year with some of the younger players. They will benefit from this next year, having players with game experience to fill in for the very few that are leaving. And in some cases, like Jesse Williams, they will be upgrading.

    Auburn was thin at depth this year, as I have also said. Auburn had the one injury early in the season, and they were able to overcome it. But again, the offense was not the problem for Auburn. It was the defense that caused them to fall behind early. And we are discussing this with hindsight, no preseason predictions.

    But Auburn is losing a lot of starters on offense and defense this year. A lot more than usual, and a lot more than Bama is. Those are facts. The speculation from me is that Bama should have more experienced players coming back and will be improved over last season. I don’t think Auburn takes a step forward next season, but takes a step back. All this is not based on bias, but the FACTS of who will be coming back next season.

    But Bama didn’t have a depth problem, just a lot of injuries throughout the season. Having to play some inexperienced players wasn’t the gameplan, and they had to adjust throughout the year. The talent is there, everyone recognizes that. 9-3 is not a failure of a year. It is a good season, and I think they improve from that record next season, like Auburn did from last season to this season. But Auburn will still have a depth problem next season, and if they have multiple injuries to deal with it could get ugly.

But they are a lot better than they were before Saban. Injuries to key starters will affect your team, even if you don’t want to believe that, it is still true. Were they the best team in the country? No. But at the beginning of the season, the potential was there. Did anyone think Auburn would have the season they did? No. No one knew that Cam would be the breakout player this season. Does Auburn have a replacement for Cam? Chances are mighty slim. Bama will be back in contention for the SEC next year. Auburn will not. That is my opinion, based on the facts as they are. Now go ahead, this is where you change the subject, and deflect the truth again.

    Some of you guys act as if AU destroyed ‘Bama this year… AU, alone, won that game on the Ingram and McElroy fumbles. If ‘Bama had gotten 3 points instead of turning the ball over, Alabama wins. As simple as that, even if G-Mac and the three others had still gotten hurt. I’m not taking anything away from your victory, but don’t act like Alabama stood no chance in that game. We were the only defense capable of containing Newton’s running game, but how did he ultimately beat us? With the pass against a thin secondary that suffered all season long.

    And we’re not losing our entire offense. Practically the entire O-line is returning and the WR corps is still gonna be sick. The only position in question is the QB position. But we have 3 seemingly talented QBs to choose from and surely at least one can’t be any worse than G-Mac was.

    We had this problem going into the 2009 season (losing key members on the o-line and QB) and look how that panned out.

    With Hightower, Barron, Lester, Upshaw, Kirkpatrick returning, plus the addition of Robby Greene, and the JUCO players coming in, our defense is going to see a MAJOR improvement compared to the garbage we witnessed this year. As long as our offense plays conservative and doesn’t surrender many turnovers, our D will do their part (shutting down the run, forcing turnovers), keeping us in contention for the SEC title again.
