Another year over and it looks like Kirby Smart is a hot name again. This time Florida is reportedly interested in Alabama’s defensive coordinator. According to a tweet from Gatorsports Robbie Andreu, “News happening right now. Looks like Kirby Smart will be UF’s new defensive coordinator. He and Muschamps are close friends.” Andreu also tweeted, “Smart has been offered the job, according to sources.”

The Tuscaloosa News just moved a story supporting the talks between Florida’s new coach Will Muschamp and Alabama’s defensive coordinator. According to the newspaper, “Smart, defensive coordinator at the University of Alabama the last three seasons, and new Florida head coach Will Muschamp have been in discussions about the position in recent days, multiple sources say, although it is not known if Muschamp has made a formal offer that includes financial terms. It is not known if Smart will take the position.”

The Alabama Crimson Tide raised Kirby Smart’s salary after Georgia’s pursuit of Alabama’s defensive coordinator. In January Smart said, “After thinking about all the factors over the last couple days, we are going to stay at the University of Alabama. We love it in Tuscaloosa, have made some great friends here and I think we are building something special here at Alabama with Coach Saban. I have learned so much in the time I’ve spent with Coach Saban, and every year I feel like I become a better coach.”

Have things changed so much since January? It should be an interesting next few days.

The entire offensive line, Chris Farley, Josh Bynes, Cam Newton, Kodi Burns, Craig Stevens, etc. 8 starters on defense, half the offense is gone. You can’t and won’t replace that much and come from behind by double digits with a tough road schedule. Keep in mind Bama had a very young team, with very few seniors. Plus another top 3 recruiting class, and a whole top recruiting class from last year that redshirted. I take Bama’s team over yours next year, and so are many other people who know more about football than a potty-mouth trailer queen.
