ALABAMA COACHING STAFF RECOGNIZES SIX PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Following Saturday’s 31-6 win over No. 7 Florida, six Crimson Tide players were named players of the week by the Alabama coaching staff. Wide receiver Darius Hanks and offensive guard Chance Warmack were named on offense. Defensively, safety Mark Barron and linebacker Courtney Upshaw were recognized. Cornerback John Fulton and running back Trent Richardson represented the special teams. On Monday, Upshaw was honored as the SEC Defensive Player of the Week and Warmack was the SEC Offensive Lineman of the Week.

Warmack received the top grade on the offensive line and had key blocks on both of Mark Ingram’s touchdown runs that gave Alabama leads of 10-0 and 17-0 in the first half. Hanks caught three passes for 33 yards and also did an outstanding job blocking downfield. Alabama was 4-for-4 in the redzone Saturday with three touchdowns and did not have a turnover against the Gators. The Crimson Tide offense ranks in the Top 20 nationally in three major categories – scoring offense, total offense and rushing offense.

On defense, Barron led all tacklers with 11 stops on the night. He also had Alabama’s only sack and broke up a pair of passes. Barron is Alabama’s leading tackler this season with 31 through five games. Upshaw had an outstanding performance with seven tackles, four tackles for loss, two pass break-ups and one fumble recovery. The fumble recovery came on second and goal from the Alabama 1-yard line and ended a Florida scoring threat in the third quarter. In opening a 24-3 lead at the half, the Tide held UF to just 96 total yards and 1-of-7 on third downs. The Alabama defense, which has not allowed a touchdown in the last six quarters, leads the nation in scoring defense (9.0 ppg).

Richardson was again recognized on special teams and is the only player to be listed by the coaches as a player of the week following all five games this season. The sophomore had 121 all-purpose yards Saturday night, with 58 coming on three kickoff returns and 63 more on 10 rushes with a long of 30. He also added a pair of solo tackles on kickoff coverage. Fulton, a true freshman, earned his first player of the week honor for his play on special teams. Fulton had one tackle in the game on punt coverage and had a key block on Julio Jones’ 41-yard punt return in the second quarter. UA started that drive at the UF 42-yard line and it eventually led to Ingram’s second TD run and extended the lead to 17-0.
