Who knew texting could be fun? Each one is like a Christmas present. A day of texts from a beautiful woman can brighten the mood and keep even this curmudgeon positive. Therefore, inspired by positivity, I’m going to tell you what I like about the Alabama Crimson Tide’s 2010 edition.

What I like about Alabama is head football coach Nick Saban. There is no greater leader in college football today. Saban runs a complete program that leaves nothing to chance. He obsesses over every detail and then holds subordinates accountable. It might not make you popular with the media or lazy assistants, but the fans love it.

What I like about the Alabama Crimson Tide is quarterback Greg McElroy. He is smart and a winner. Those are strong attributes for a quarterback; he displayed resilience during his first season as a starter. He is poised for an even better 2010 now that he possesses that experience.

What I like about the Alabama Crimson Tide is the defensive front seven. The linebackers feature Dont’a Hightower and the line features Marcel Dareus. This group is filled with leaders and playmakers. Much of the success in 2010 will depend on the ability of this group to pressure the quarterback. I’m betting they will do their job and help out the secondary.

What I like about Alabama is the increased capacity of Bryant-Denny Stadium. The place just gets better and better. It is a showplace worthy of the Alabama Crimson Tide. It is a testament to Mal Moore’s philosophy for running the athletic department.

What I’ll be watching in fall camp is the kicking game. Place kicking and punting are huge in football. I’ve had concerns about Alabama’s special teams over the last couple of seasons, and it looks like those concerns could linger into 2010. Fall camp will be an important indicator for how this element of the team will work in the 2010 season.

  1. how different might things be if nick saban were in charge of the oil spill response and recovery effort?

  2. I was going to write a column about that a few weeks ago Finebammer, but decided not too as it was too depressing to contemplate.

  3. I have to say we need the Auburn PR department on the oil spill. They have proven that they are masters of stopping leaks. And hey if it does get out I am sure they can get the Birmingham News to distract us with something totally unrelated.

  4. What I like is how long the Bama fans were in the closet…with their dusty ole gear.

  5. What I like is that we have players playing third team on both sides of the ball who could be starting for over half the other teams in the conference.
