Editor’s note: This is about sports and politics. If you don’t want to be offended by a political discussion then skip this post. You’ve been warned.

Politics is funny. Politicians and political activists will say anything—even if it isn’t true. Case in point: Tim Tebow’s Super Bowl ad. According to an AP story (read it embedded below this commentary), women’s groups are furious that someone might have a prolife message and a compelling spokesman against abortion.

“An ad that uses sports to divide rather than to unite has no place in the biggest national sports event of the year — an event designed to bring Americans together,” said Jehmu Greene, president of the New York-based Women’s Media Center.

Feel free to laugh. The Super Bowl isn’t designed to “bring Americans together” as this delusional woman thinks. The Super Bowl was designed to make money.

And to make buckets of it.

It is anathema to some, but for most of America money is a good thing. We buy big televisions and big SUVs in an effort to pollute and cause global warming—and who wouldn’t like a little global warming considering how cold this winter has been? But that is a topic for another day (and I probably should write it soon since all that global warming evidence is evaporating fast these days thanks to all the revelations that researchers were committing fraud and using faked data.)

Tebow had this to stay about his Super Bowl ad and stance on abortion, “I know some people won’t agree with it, but I think they can at least respect that I stand up for what I believe. I’ve always been very convicted of it (his views on abortion) because that’s the reason I’m here, because my mom was a very courageous woman. So any way that I could help, I would do it.”

While I know a few Georgia fans that wish Tebow had been aborted, the attempt to muzzle Tebow’s viewpoint is a despicable action from liberals—who should be more committed than anyone to allowing free speech. Well, that is if liberals followed the principles they pretend to embrace.

But some of the statements from liberal organizations in the Tebow case are just absurd. Like this from the National Organization of Women. “That’s not being respectful of other people’s lives,” said Terry O’Neill, the president of the National Organization for Women. “It is offensive to hold one way out as being a superior way over everybody else’s.”

Some ways are superior to others. The choice to rob a bank is morally wrong. The choice to give to charity and feed the hungry is morally good. I suspect NOW believes a country that is prochoice is morally superior to a country that does not have such a policy. That is a moral judgment; it is an assertion that one way is better than another. Can’t liberals be consistent about anything?

In a free society we need these types of discussions. Why is it that liberals want to deny Tim Tebow a platform for sharing his thoughts? Are liberals afraid their positions can’t stand up to that test?

It is unfortunate that this blog is so quick to demonize differences by such wide condemnation of “the liberals.” I have to agree with Pastor Rick Warren when he poses this as one of the great problems facing our society today. Pastor Rick’s “Whole-Life” approach to the respect and dignity of the human person–in all of its stages and phases–very much along the same lines as the late Cardinal Bernardin’s “Consistent Ethic of Life” are two vivid examples of balanced, reasonable and Christian approaches to some of the very complex issues of our day. It is sad that so many who claim to have Christian values are the first to condem and divide by name calling and caricature!

Talk in lay terms where “Billy the barner” can understand you. Your grasp on theory does more to divide in here than anything you just pontificated about.

    But one thing I can assure you: Rick Warren condemns the act of abortion but is quick to love the individual who makes that dire mistake.

    I applaud Tebow, and totally agree with Cappy’s take on the irony of liberal condemnation.

    Neither this blog nor the article that it discusses ever mentions government intervention. “Free speech,” as it is meant within the First Amendment (the right “liberals” normally seek to protect), only prevents, or more precisely limits, the federal government’s, as well as a state’s (see the incorporation doctrine), interference with an individual’s ability to exercise his right to speak. No Constitutional Amendment (with the arguable exception of the 13th) applies to an individual. So this protest is not an attack on “free speech,” no matter how much you want it to be.

    Second, protesting utilizes a free market approach to obtain a desired result. CBS made its decision, and could changes its mind, based on economics. If it is worth the money it will air the ad, and if the protests will cause harm to CBS’s bottom line (and your blog claims to love money) it won’t. This is market economics at its finest. Although it will not always produce the results you want (and here it it appears that it has), you should be prepared to live with the results.

    Finally, I have no idea what the word “liberal” actually means. Now I know what you think it means, but that may appear to be a gross simplification of the word, especially if you consider many people views change depending on the context of the discussion.

    Yes, we all got sick of Tebow, but that had more to do with others fawning over him, more than anything he did.

  15. In an unanimous decision in Red Lion Broadcasting Co. v. FCC, 395 U.S. 367 (1969), the Supreme Court upheld the use of the fairness doctrine. It is not “free speech.” That being said, I do not agree with it, nor do I endorse its use.

    You also missed my point on the ad. All I said was that IF the ad is pulled because of the protests, it will because the money that CBS receives from airing it isn’t worth the backlash. This is using free-market economics to pressure CBS into dropping the ad, and that’s a good thing. It would also be a good thing if CBS airs the ad.

    By the way why do you think I am an Auburn fan?

    I am opposed to a woman choosing to have an abortion. I am also a conservative (Au = Gold [not Auburn], H2-O = Water, add the two together you get Goldwater). What I said is I think people I disagree with have the same right to try to get CBS to pull the ad as Tebow and his backers have to try and get them to put it on the air.

And women who are in the untenable and undesirable position of having to seek an abortion have a hard enough decision to make without sanctimonious idiots with no stake or personal responsibility in the outcome spouting off their religious beliefs or trying to guilt-trip them into making a decision that is against their and their unborn babies’ best interests. If women had the support and information they needed before they got pregnant in the first place, there would be alot fewer abortions. That’s why conservatives and their abstenance only education always result in higher birthrates and higher abortion rates, and liberals with their comprehensive sex education always (AND I MEAN ALWAYS) result in lower rates of pregnancies, births, and abortions.

I think that’s what pisses liberals off the most about the ad, because young people will be told by a football legend to think of others over theirselves. Furthermore, the armed forces are as paired back and thin as they have been in 70 years. I’m not concerned with Al-Qaeda as mich as I am fearful of Iran, China, Russia, and Al-Qaeda at the same time. That war is coming in the next 20 years.

All anyone that has half a brain needs to do is look at a image of a live fetus in the womb to understand that. Like it or not, those are facts. Abortion is taking the life of the unborn in the womb, and there is no way around it. Simply put, abortion is taking life. The only difference between that, and walking into a hospital and killing a newborn, is that abortion is legal. God have mercy on us.

    So at what point does the fetus become “alive”? At implantation? At conception? It is just a joining of a sperm and an egg. It is no more alive than the egg and sperm were moments earlier. Millions of sperm die during sex (or even when HAMMAH is masturbating–must be why his caps lock key is stuck). There is no real way to tell when the fetus becomes “alive” or “gets a soul”, so thoughtful people can honestly disagree when the fetus, or blastocyst, or egg actually becomes alive. The truth of the matter is that the issue isn’t so easy. Women get raped. Babies can have life threatening deformities. Quality of life has to matter, and that isn’t something that you can decide for anyone else. Nobody wants to have an abortion. Nobody wants to kill their baby. Sometimes it is the least crappy option of a bunch of crappy options, and it is a decision that should be made without the aforementioned sanctimonious idiots preaching their limited world view.

    I also think that it is disingenious of all the “pro-life” posters in this article calling for peoples death, or even allowing comments like that to go unchallenged. Unless you are God herself, what gives you the right to judge that fetuses should be protected, but everyone else is fair game?

  29. I would prefer to have a scientific debate with facts instead of a theological debate with opinions or beliefs. I respect your opinion, but belief does not make fact. You can believe what you want, and that’s fine, but it is not what I believe.

    You could believe that the Earth is flat, or at the center of the universe, or that the sun and planets revolve around the Earth. I’m not saying that you do, but that you could. Christianity held these very beliefs for many years and people were branded as heretics when they tried to refute them, because others believed that it called into question the central teachings of the church. It did not. It only stated facts. So beliefs can be wrong. That doesn’t mean that your faith is wrong, only that beliefs can be wrong.

  33. The late term abortion issue is a canard. They are very dangerous, and are usually only performed if there is a great medical need. Banning them outright only puts women’s lives at risk, but that’s okay, since they are only filthy whores, anyway.

    Facts don’t point either way. The big bang is a theory–a way of interpreting what little facts we have about what happened a long time ago. In regard to creation, it depends on how you interpret it. If you go for the literal the Earth was created in six days and he rested 5000 years ago, then no. Facts show that the Earth is much older than that. I’ll leave that for another comment thread, though. 🙂

    Whether the action is illegal or not isn’t important, I’m talking about whether the action is ethical.

    Is it ethical to kill something if you don’t know if it is a person or not? You can’t just say it is moot because of X or Y or Z.

    And please! Society tells us all what to do with our bodies all the freaking time. We tell people NOT to use drugs. We tell people NOT to drink too much. We tell people to go to war and fight and die. We tell people to get babies immunized.

    We tell people all the time what to do with their bodies. Society often has a compelling reason to regulate behavior. Why is abortion any different?

  43. I have a son. He is the most wonderful thing in my live next to my wife. I personally would never have an abortion, but that is moot since I am male. Barring medical necessity, my wife wouldn’t either. But that is not MY point. My point is that I won’t tell someone else what they should do with their body. You personally BELIEVE life begins at conception. I believe it starts earlier. The sperm is alive. The egg is alive. The bible condemns “spilling of the seed.” Every month a potential baby dies during a woman’s cycle. Multiply that by millions for a man when he ejaculates, whether for sex, masturbation, or even when the body expels excess seed on its own. All of that is wasted life. There isn’t anything magical about conception. It is a life process, just like all the others.

    Every society collapses, given enough time. That is nothing new. It is telling, though, that the longest surviving societies currently are non-Christian.

    And no. This country was not founded on Christianity. It was founded by people who were seeking their own religious freedoms. A great many of them were Christian, but more than a few of our founding fathers were atheists and humanists.

    The statement that the country was not founded on Christianity is the exact reason why I disagree with how history is taught in this country. Everything that was written by the Framers and Founding Fathers was clothed in the words of scripture, God and the Bible.

    Just because Thomas Jefferson was a deist doesn’t mean that the country was apathetic on religion. Besides, Jefferson was a total douchebag and an immoral joke. He fucked his wife’s mullatto half sister and sired a line of children with her.

    Too bad none of those boys ran for president like our dear leader from, ahem, Hawaii, by way of Kenya.

  46. In fact, all of the law in this country is founded on the precedent of religious law from England. Law was originally founded as rules set forth from God and the King James interpretations of the Bible.

    Kings became sovereign due to their ordained right from God. Whether this is in fact true or not, the religion was the reasoning for the law. Law then came from the Church.

    Following the formation of the Church of England, the Christian God was still the grantor of all sovereign authority. He was just the English interpretation and not the Roman Catholic Church interpretation. Everyone knows that the split was due to the fact that Henry VIII wanted to marry different women and he got tired of paying tithes to a Church that didn’t agree with his need to screw a lot of women to get a son.

    Regardless, the Declaration of Independence states unequivically that “And for the support of this declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor.”

    I suppose according to your condescending, intellectual perspective on American History that “Divine Providence” merely means good fortune. But to me, and anyone else with half a brain, the document is referring to Almighty God.

    Furthermore, the Declaration says something to the effect of

    We hold these truths to be self–evident,
    That all men are created equal,
    That they are endowed by their CREATOR
    with certain unalienable Rights,
    That among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.–
    That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men,
    Deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.

    So, Shawn. Either the Declaration of Independence is referring to a Judeo-Christian God, or perhaps they are referring to Horton and they thought we’re all in Whoville.

    I’ve heard for years people with college degrees try to make the “enlightened” statement that this country was born out of religious tolerance and freedom of religion enough til I am sick of it.

    There was no religious freedom. If you were to try and start a Mosque in 18th century Philadelphia you would have been hung on Main Street and had horse shit thrown at your face Shawn. Don’t try to come in here and pretend to know what this country was founded upon.

    It’s only in the last forty years that the advancement of liberalism and the secularization of society that there has become a mode of thought that Christianity has no place in the foundation of the U.S.A.
