AP: Florida’s Meyer resigns amid health concerns

Florida coach Urban Meyer, who was admitted to a hospital because of chest pains following the Southeastern Conference championship game, is stepping down because of health concerns.

Meyer resigned Saturday, calling it quits after five seasons in Gainesville and two national titles. He leaves Florida with a 56-10 record that includes a 32-8 mark in league play and a school-record 22-game winning streak snapped early this month against Alabama.

Meyer says he consulted with his family, his doctors, school president Bernie Machen and athletic director Jeremy Foley before deciding it is in his best interest to focus on his health and family.

Meyer will hold a news conference in New Orleans on Sunday afternoon and will coach his final game in the Sugar Bowl against Cincinnati on New Year’s Day.

From the official statement reported by ESPN: “After consulting with my family, Dr. Machen, Jeremy Foley and my doctors, I believe it is in my best interest to step aside and focus on my health and family.

“I’m proud to be a part of the Gainesville community and the Gator Nation and I plan to remain in Gainesville and involved with the University of Florida.

“I’m very appreciative for the opportunity I’ve had to be a part of a tremendous institution – from Dr. Machen to Jeremy Foley and the entire administrative staff at UF. I’m also very thankful for the chance to work with some of the best assistants in college football and coach some of the best college football players and watch them grow both on and off the field as people. I will cherish the relationships with them the most.”

  4. Actually, I think Lane Kiffin made Meyer quit. I mean, everybody is afraid of Kiffin! Just look how close he played everybody!!!!

  5. LMAO!!! I’m not buying the health issue — again as I have posted I will see how this plays out after the Sugar Bowl but I just don’t think he’s sitting down coach all together. He will be back. I think a lot of it has to do with no Tim Tebow and a very young Florida team coming back next year with an 8 W season +/- === a lot of questions with no answers with my knee jerk reaction.

  11. Coach Meyer deserves everybody’s respect. As for me and my house we will pray for him, his health, and family. Anyone saying less needs to examine themselves and their relationship to God. Just as Coach Saban said, “It is God, family and then football.” Bama fans show some class not this crassness I’ve seen displayed.

  12. I’d be glad to get UF fans an instruction book on class. God knows that they exude class as they laughed at Bowden and revelled in their glory on Marta on the way to the Dome on gameday. Yall are just getting what has been coming to you.

    Just remember Florida, we don’t always beat you. But when we do win, we destroy you.
