SMART NAMED FINALIST FOR BROYLES AWARD: Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart has been named one of five finalists for the Frank Broyles Award, which is presented annually to the nation’s top assistant coach in college football.
Smart is joined by Boise State offensive coordinator Bryan Harsin, Cincinnati offensive coordinator Jeff Quinn, Florida defensive coordinator Charlie Strong and TCU defensive coordinator Dick Bumpus as this year’s finalists.
Under Smart’s tutelage, the Alabama defense ranks among the top three nationally in all three major statistical categories. UA is first in the NCAA in pass efficiency defense (85.88), second in scoring defense (10.83 ppg) and rushing defense, (77.08 ypg) and third in total defense (233.92 ypg). Alabama has not allowed a 100-yard rusher in 32 straight games – a streak that leads the country. The Crimson Tide defense has recorded 19 interceptions this year which is currently seventh in the NCAA standings.

The Alabama football team worked for two hours in full pads inside the Hank Crisp Indoor Facility on Tuesday afternoon as preparations for the 2009 SEC Championship Game continued.
Alabama senior defensive lineman Lorenzo Washington talked about the team’s work this week for Saturday’s game against No. 1 Florida.
“We are trying to limit our mistakes and everybody do our job on every play,†Washington said after Tuesday’s practice. “The more times we do that the more successful we will be.â€
Washington also noted that the experience of playing the Gators last season and facing other teams with a similar offense will be helpful in this week’s game plan.
“I think it helps us a lot that we are used to their offense.†Washington said “We’ve played them once before. We’ve also seen their offensive coordinator (Dan Mullen) from last year at Mississippi State. That’s like kind of playing them again, earlier. Auburn’s offense is similar to that. Virginia Tech ran some similar things, like the shovel pass. We played a couple of other teams here and there that did similar things to what Florida does. It’s just experience.â€
The 2009 SEC Championship Game will kick off at 3 p.m. (CT) on Saturday and will be nationally televised by CBS Sports. Verne Lundquist, Gary Danielson and Tracy Wolfson will call the action from Atlanta. Eli Gold, Phil Savage and Barry Krauss will call the action for the Crimson Tide Sports Network. The game can be heard locally in Tuscaloosa on WFNN-FM (95.3).

How did Auburn get the Outback Bowl? They paid a fortune tp get into it. It may be the first time a team paid more to get into a bowl than the bowl was offering in payout.
This year the Outback Bowl, Last year the Outhouse Bowl. Next year, Maybe Auburn can buy all the way back into the Chicken Sandwich Bowl again. And maybe they will have a new “Spread ” Guru then too. It will be like 2008 all over again.
Oddly enough. I saw the Alabama- Auburn game on local television live.
Considering I am living in Australia, that is a pretty worldwide market for UA. On a related note. Everybody I watched the game with thought Auburn was in New York. …. Hmmm I wonder why. LMAO.
BTW Auburn may actually be 11-0 in 2010. But the 12th game of the year will be Bama at Tuscaloosa. And they have as much chance of winning that as a ficus tree getting elected for president.

If the admin won’t pay to keep Smart and even more importantly, McElwain, THEY ought to leave too. Losing Smart would be bad enough, but the D is Sabans and he has Sunseri to help. That’s klnd of like Kiffin having his father. There shouldn’t be an insurmountable transition. Although Smart is an integral part of the team chemistry. But losing McElwain is a different story altogether. GMAC is in his fledgling season and has already had confidence issues. Neither he nor the rest of the O needs the disastrous extra burden of learning a new O system in the offseason. There will once again be new faces in the O line, and a different starting tight end, and therefore chemistry will be an issue for awhile anyway. Lord help us when Penn St arrives if our O is in the nubile stages! Keep em Dammit! RTR!

There was an Outback Bowl rep. at the Iron Bowl and was “impressed” by the crowd. Well no shit — it’s a rivalry game.
