Here is the official release:

TUSCALOOSA – Alabama senior left guard Mike Johnson has been named the Southeastern Conference Offensive lineman of the week, following the Tide’s 31-3 win over Mississippi State on Saturday, the league office announced Monday morning.

The Pensacola, Fla., native helped clear the way for an Alabama offense that gained 444 yards, with sophomore running back Mark Ingram rushing for 149 yards and two touchdowns. The 252 rushing yards was the second-highest rushing total by the Tide this season and the most in an SEC game.

He earned the top grade among Alabama’s offensive lineman as he did not allow a sack, a pressure, or get called for any penalties in the win at Mississippi State. The Tide averaged 8.4 yards per play and 6.3 yards per rush in the win.

Johnson is the seventh different Crimson Tide player to earn SEC weekly honors this season. In fact, Alabama has had at least one SEC Player of the Week winner in nine of its first 10 games, including Mark Ingram (Virginia Tech and South Carolina), Trent Richardson (Florida International and Arkansas), Rolando McClain (Kentucky), William Vlachos (Mississippi), Leigh Tiffin (Tennessee) and Terrence Cody (Tennessee).

The Alabama coaching staff recognized seven players of the week following a 31-3 win at Mississippi State. Mark Ingram and Mike Johnson were selected as the offensive honorees while Rolando McClain, Mark Barron and Cory Reamer were selected for their defensive efforts. Javier Arenas and Robby Green garnered special team accolades.

Johnson cleared a path for Ingram to collect his sixth 100-yard rushing game of the season. Ingram finished with 149 yards on just 19 carries for an impressive 7.84 yards per carry average. He ripped off the longest run of his career with a 70-yard touchdown burst in the fourth quarter. He also scored on a one-yard plunge in the second stanza and caught one pass for nine yards.

McClain garnered his sixth defensive player of the week accolade this season with 11 total stops, including nine solo tackles. He also logged his third sack of the season and totaled three tackles for loss (-17 yards). Barron picked off his fifth and sixth passes of the season to lead the SEC and rank tied for third nationally. He also made five tackles with four solo stops and two more pass breakups. Reamer made seven tackles with five solo stops, a sack (-11 yards) and two TFL (-14 yards).

Arenas returned two kickoffs for 70 yards with a long of 46 yards, which set up a second-half touchdown for the Tide. Green made two special teams tackles to lead the Tide’s coverage units.

  1. “In fact, Alabama has had at least one SEC Player of the Week winner in nine of its first 10 games, including Mark Ingram … ”

    ’nuff said…

    rick james bitches
(the hand — week 11 ensues)

  2. I myself am extremely disappointed that Marquis Johnson did not get any awards, not conference, not in house, no accolade from Saban, no nothing! His 3 pass breakups were past sensational. All three were in the endzone and all 3 would have been tds, which would have changed the game and maybe even the outcome. They were 3 game changing plays equal to the explosive tds of Ingram, Jones and Hanks. That he didn’t even get mentioned is bullshit. They were every bit if not more spectacular than his 3 fade route breakups against USC. Way to go Marquis! RTR!

  3. Interesting point E.G. — I must admit though that Marquis Johnson has kind of came out of the woodworks from nowhere. Where the FUCK was this guy all year!?!

Much props to him — RTR!!!

  4. He got burned last year in nearly every game that we gave up big pass plays in. He started this year because of his experience, but he got burned against VT. Everybody was calling for his head through the UNT game, including me, and then he just sort of disappeared until USC when he replaced the injured Javier. Spurrier knew it. He had Garcia pick on him the whole game. Why else would anybody run the same damn play to the same spot on the same side in the end zone 3 times in a row? Spurrier knew the astrnomical odds against a reserve CB stopping his best and 8″ taller TE 3 times in a row. But Marquise played world class. And Miss St. damn, those 3 passes were perfectly thrown and over Marquis head to taller recievers. I had already conceeded each one a td. But Marquis was like Mr. Fantastic. He streched and fought and slapped and punched all the way to the turf, until the recievers lost control of the ball! Don’t know what happened during those 4 weeks, but the man is a keeper now! RTR!

  5. Saban did talk praisingly about him in another interview, but said nothing during team awards, and I just don’t think that’s right. That man basically save 2 games for us! RTR!

  6. Ha! Better late than never! I told ya’ll! Todays T-Town News front page headlined Marquis Johnson, and page 1 sports led with a huge photo, stats and great column. With less than 50% playing time he still leads the SEC with pass breakups! Mullin tried to burn him from the first play because he was so easy in Atlanta last year. After the game Mullin looked up Marquis and told him that after tonight he didn’t think Florida would be coming his way! LMAO! RTR!

  7. E.G. —

I hope Nick Saban doesn’t start ANY of our starters. Maybe here and there for rhythmic purposes — but I would love to see Star Jackson & Co. go out there (hell even Darrah) and clown these fools.

Perfect “BYE” week for the Crimson Tide just like Auburn picked their BYE week so they can rest up and play big bad Alabama. And Chiznik was bitching about having to play 11 straight. LMAO!!!
