Let’s say you’re Mike Slive, Commissioner of the SEC, and the football officials that work for you are being demeaned, threatened, castigated and even labeled as conspirators in an elaborate plot to help the conference get two or three specific teams in the conference championship game. All for the money it will mean for the conference.
What should you do?
What should you say?
Easy. You send a letter of reprimand to all coaches that violate the policy against commenting on officiating. Great! That will do it. Right?
No! Wait. Lane Kiffin calls your letter meaningless. “I guess I will get another one of those meaningless letters from the conference,†he said.
Then, the Tennessee Assistant Head Coach, Ed Orgeron, says “Seems like some people get the calls and some people don’t,†soon after the letter is sent to his boss. Is this a surrogate speaking on his own, or perhaps his boss instructed him to say this? We may never really know, but you know this is definitely over the top.
Then on the SEC’s teleconference, Kiffin showed further contempt for Slive and the SEC. Kiffin said, “I’m not getting into conversations about it and whether I feel that we have been treated different than, per se, Florida or Alabama or Nick Saban or Urban Meyer.â€
Kiffin can’t even shut his mouth without insulting others.
Now what? Suspend Kiffin? Fine the University for lack of institutional control over the coaching staff? Why not both?
What if you were the manager of a company and your company was being talked about in this way by the very people that benefit from its existence. You wouldn’t allow it, not for a second! My guess is that the SEC will come down hard on young Mr. Kiffin and his staff.
We know this is a difficult decision but lack of action is intolerable. Allow this conduct to go on and it will get worse.
The SEC and the nation are waiting, Mr. Slive.

Cap, I know the nation (excluding the Vols) thinks that the SEC and Slive should do something with Kiffin. I have buddies from the Big 10 that have asked me “why haven’t the SEC killed that guy yet?” I know that being a Bama fan someone will tell me to shut up but I would feel like this if it were Miss St or anyone in the SEC. Why have they not hammered Tenn for this? How can a governing organization take someone saying “what you say is meaningless” and not punish them? Does the SEC have the authority to punish this kid and do you think they will?
I also have a few buddies that are Tenn fans that aren’t total jackasses that get on these sites and profess their undying love for Zac Morris in a Tenn windbreaker and all of them are embarrassed that their coach acts like he does. You know, the guys who actuality graduated from Tenn that are educated and you can enjoy the rivalry with. I guess that we haven’t ever seen someone so immature as a coach and the SEC doesn’t know how to deal with this.
I can’t believe it’s Thursday, Slive and the SEC officials have taken it up the ass from Kiffin and Orgeron, and yet there still is no response other than ‘a letter that means nothing’. Apparently Kitten Shit was right and Slive has no balls!

the other now enjoys the adulation of the program’s fans and boosters and works in a positive atmosphere.
nobody from auburn’s running around beating their chest claiming we ALMOST won or we SHOULD have won.

Finebammer Im not sayin all the Tenn grads are embarassed by their coach. I said MY buddies that grad from Tenn and that I think have some class are embarassed. No one is talking about Auburn on ESPN. I think that you missed my point. I am saying that no matter if Kiffin is trying to do this on purpous or not, he should be held accountable for his actions. The SEC must do something IF they don’t want things to get worse. It’s the same as in a game, if the refs don’t make the tough calls for fear of holding up the game (or whatever), things get out of control. Little kids keep pushing until they find where the limit is. If ‘no’ doesn’t work, then a spanking will clear things up. It’s time for a spanking for both the refs AND the load mouth coaches!
I feel at the end of this season a new policy should be enacted in the SEC. Any coach reprimanded three times in the same calendar year would receive an automatic five game suspension and the loss of five scholarships. Everyone would be put on notice and coaches would be held responsible for the comments of their subordinates (ie Orgeron).
