Alabama football: Tuesday news & links

T he Alabama Crimson Tide practiced Monday indoors in Tuscaloosa. The Tide is getting ready for its SEC opener against the Arkansas Razorbacks.

“Arkansas, to me, is one of the best offensive teams in the country,” Saban said at his weekly press conference on Monday. “Bobby Petrino has always been one of the best offensive coaches, wherever he has been or whatever level. They have a great passing game; a very good system. Now with the quarterback Ryan Mallett, who leads the nation in passing efficiency, he is obviously a guy who can execute and do it very well, but he also has some very good players around him. They have a couple of running backs, Michael Smith and Dennis Johnson, who are very good players. They have three receivers who are in the top-10 in the SEC in terms of receptions. They have a good tight end. Their offensive line plays extremely well in their system.”

The best news for Alabama fans, Julio Jones and Roy Upchurch practiced. Expectations are the pair will be ready for the Arkansas game, but Saban said the players would be evaluated day-to-day.

    brett favre/curley hallman

    tim tebow/urban meyer.

the difference?? the cast of surrounding characters.

curley hallman didn’t have the “playas” around favre urban has around tebow.

curley hallman didn’t have the expectations of the florida fanbase either.

the alabama fan base gets a lot of grief about it’s expectations of the head football coach.

i’ve always thought that a bit unfair considering the expectations of the florida crowd.

this is a bunch who basically ran off the architect of their shallow championship tradition, steve spurrier.

steve couldn’t win it every year. foley made him go away.

should urban stay in the wake of tebow’s graduation to the nfl (or where ever he decides to go) it will be interesting to see how he handles the expectations of that crowd.

the two championships have them VERY spoiled.

because tebow’s gone, i know their expectations won’t change.

i have a friend who happens to be a gator. he told me once about opposing fans at their stadium, “if we can’t beat you on the field, we’ll meet you in the parking lot”.

    goes for their coaches too.
