A horrendous defeat to a FCS school has University of Virginia fans in rebellion. Patience has been exhausted. Al Groh is doomed. And some fans want Tommy Tuberville.

Is it possible?

Earlier this year, one of the blog’s regular Auburn visitors suggested the possibility. Julio opined back in February, “Cappy, I think Tubs will probably have a good choice of jobs next year if he doesn’t get too comfortable being a commentator. I’d say keep an eye on Virginia. If Al Groh doesn’t have a strong season next year, I think the consensus is that he will likely be gone. Tubs would be a perfect fit for that job, and I bet UVA would jump at the chance to get him.”

And the Cavalier loss to William & Mary just might be enough to jettison Al Groh.

But what about Tuberville? Auburn clearly downgraded when it picked a guy with a pathetic record to coach on the Plains. Tuberville was a very solid coach, and owned an impressive record. And it becomes even more impressive when you realize he did it in the SEC. Who owns Urban Meyer? Tuberville deserved more time; it was unrealistic expectations that forced the end of the Tuberville regime at Auburn.

Several jobs could open this season, and the former Auburn coach has said he wants to coach again. One interesting note, Tuberville watched the Alabama Crimson Tide defeat the Virginia Tech Hokies Saturday in Atlanta. He is staying close to the game. If there is one thing Tuberville knows better than duck hunting, it is how to network. He is staying busy and staying visible.

But where would Tuberville fit? Virginia? Louisville? Miami?

Virginia could be it. Expectations are far more rational than Auburn. (Auburn fans are already blogging that Alabama looked bad in its game, and Auburn dominated the best team in college football—La Tech!) If Tuberville wanted a better environment, Virginia has tolerated a coach that has lost seven of his last eight to rival Virginia Tech. That comes with its disadvantages too. Would Virginia be willing to invest in a coach of Tuberville’s quality, and the necessary infrastructure if it has such low expectations?

If Virginia is serious about improving its program, it should make a run at Tuberville, and do it now. There will be a rush for Tuberville’s services at the conclusion of 2009. Making a move early would demonstrate a change in attitude.

10 thoughts on “Tommy Tuberville to Virginia?”

  1. Tubbs is a good coach as long as Va Tech goes on the worst probation handed down since SMU received the death penalty. He’ll rattle off a streak and hoist a few fingers and one liners without ever acknowledging the field isn’t level.

He is a good coach, all kidding aside, and Abarn panicked when Nick turned the Tide so quickly. He deserves another shot somewhere.

  2. Not using Julio as a source, but giving him credit for having the idea first.

Groh is toast, and I know Virginia fans would like to have Tuberville–at least some would. And I know Tuberville wants a job.

I’m just not sure which job he wants.

  3. I think Marc Richt is in trouble by year’s end. He just has not delivered even when GA was loaded with talent. Since Aubie is one of their hated rivals, Tubbs wouldn’t be offered (nor Fulmer) because of the fan base, but who would? How about Bill Dooley of La Tech?

  4. daddio, kinda hard to understand what you’re talking about when you say Richt hasn’t “delivered”. The guy’s won at least 10 games in 7 of his 9 seasons at UGA, and he’s got 2 SEC titles. You know you’re doing something right when you go 10-3 with a Cap 1 Bowl victory and the season is a “disappointment”. UGA is out of their freakin’ minds if they get rid of Richt. He will win an NC eventually. If a coach keeps winning at the high level he consistently does in the SEC, luck will eventually fall on your side. (Don’t kid yourself into thinking an NC doesn’t depend on luck, either. You know why Saban got the chance to play for the BCS title in 03?? Because Boise State beat Hawaii the last week of the regular season, thereby harming USC’s strength of schedule and propelling LSU ahead by about 1 millionth of a point in the computer rankings. Yeah, no luck involved there.)

  5. Is the article’s reference to La Tech as “the best team in college football” due to La Tech defeating Bama the last 2 times that they played?

  6. I loved TUBBS! I thinkhe got DIDDLED around in jetgate and never forgot it! Call me stupid but i would have been PISSED and never forgot it either. I still think on his best day he is as good if not better than your beloved Nick Saban! Your right AUburn shot their load way to quickly but I beleive Tubbs was gone if they fired him or not.

  7. Not really sure why a Report on a Bammer Site is discussing an Auburn Man? But the the Topic at hand, Tubb’s home is in Miami. He has already stated that he preferred to be somewhere Warm. Miami has a Coach who is in Basic Training and has enough talent to be succesful, but his gameday decisions will cost him this season. Randy Shannon may have beaten FSU last night but he has a Gauntlet over the next 3 weeks that he’ll be lucky to win 2 of. Another Dismal season by Hurricanes’ standards will be the undoing of CRS. Tubbs to Miami… Mark it Down.
(before any Bammers ask why I’m on this site, it’s because I google’d Tommy’s name and this site came up in the list of “news” about him).
