We finally know the genesis of all those rumors about Alabama’s cheating. According to Paul Finebaum’s column in the Press-Register, former Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville was telling everyone who would listen that the Alabama Crimson Tide and Nick Saban were cheating.
Finebaum wrote, “Within weeks of Saban’s arrival, Tuberville was making claims the new Alabama coach was breaking rules of every kind. He told this to his staff, certain media members and boosters. He repeated the allegations early and often.â€
It is only natural that with such leadership the fans would plunge into the fight.
According to the sports columnist as soon as Nick Saban arrived in Tuscaloosa, “Auburn fans began calling talk shows and posting on the Internet about alleged rules violations. I talked to an Auburn man several months ago who swore he hired a private investigator to gather dirt on Saban and Alabama and would bring them down.â€
Since Tuberville left, the allegations have grown louder. Why? At the behest of Auburn’s new leadership—Pat Dye. Dye went on Finebaum’s radio program in December and accused Nick Saban and Saban’s agent of orchestrating all the rumors swirling around about Auburn’s coaching search.
Notice the trend typified by both Dye and Tuberville? The Auburn way is to scapegoat Alabama for their own shortcomings.
Lazy recruiting? Alabama is cheating.
Stupid leadership? Alabama is cheating.
All of this speaks volumes about the Auburn family and the Auburn Creed. We can’t blame Tuberville for all of this. It runs much deeper in Auburn that one coach.

Good grief cap…Tubbs spanking that butt those 6 straight years messed up you head didnt it ? Tubbs was never quoted saying Saban cheated. Everyone just assumed it. Since you are “Mr. evidence” at least when it comes to Alabamas shady dealings.. Show me a quote where Tubbs said anything. Where is the “proof” you bitch about all the time ? The evidence is a member of the media writing in print with his name attached that this happened.
That’s pretty good evidence because Finebaum could be sued if he wrote something he knew to be untrue. That is why I always say these rumors aren’t worth repeating because nobody puts their name on it who actually would know about this stuff. Why? Probably because they know their butts would be in court.
In fact, I think this problem isn’t about Tuberville. He just told Auburn fans what they wanted to hear. I think Finebaum’s column was harder on Tuberville than it should have been.
What media members ? Give me a quote of waht he said. Exactly. When did he say it ? You preach on “just the facts” then you write crap like this. You speak out of both sides of your mouth. I couldnt care less if it were true. The thing that blows my mind is the way you excel in doublespeak. Either be a “by the book” guy or dont. Pick one.

It was likely that Finebaum heard this since he wrote the column and hinted as much on his show months ago. There likely were other members of the media who heard it, but we don’t know. To verify the accuracy of Finebaum’s statement, we should look closer.
However, this is the key point. With Finebaum’s claim, we KNOW who is making the claim and can judge the source accordingly. When some random anonymous person makes a claim, it is almost impossible to judge the veracity. Finebaum’s name is on the column. That speaks volumes.
Seems more like Finebum is blaming Alabama’s troubles on Tuberville… Not sure I am following the logic that Auburn was blaming Alabama…

We can ask Tony Franklin, James Willis and Paul Finebaum about this assertion.
That’s pretty strong avenues to refute or corroborate a claim. The Gadsden stuff is just made up by anonymous people with no ability to corroborate the statements.
Get it now? Or are you just going to continue to avoid the obvious difference: Finebaum’s claim is verifiable (or the reverse) because of the public name attached to it and the level of detail. The Gadsden stuff can’t be verified because we don’t know any detials, and we can’t even ask the people making the allegations about it because they are anonymous.
So you are using Finebaums speculation as your source ? I hear ya man. He also said a few weeks back that Nick Saban was a little miffed at the redneck nation after the Sugar bowl. Does that mean hes leaving after this year ? We can use Finebaum hints as story line material all day long.
Fact is you cant quote Tommy, just Finebaum. Maybe Finebaum is right. I know that Dye said those things because I heard him say it.

Finebaum’s statement isn’t presented as speculation. It is presented as fact–something obviously, gleaned from his own personal experience, either he heard Tuberville say it, or was told by boosters, coaches and other media members this (this is how reporters work.) I can’t find it now, but I’m almost positive he indicated on his radio show he’d heard Tuberville say it. I’ll be interested in hearing his show today to see if this question gets explored and answered.
