That gathering of Auburn fans and recruits looks less “impromptu†with details that seven Auburn police were on the scene—a fact reported by the Opelika-Auburn News. One officer was on site 45 minutes before the event began, also according to the O-A News report by Andrew Gribble. Gribble provides this detail on how Auburn fans found out about the pep rally, “I know three major Auburn sports Web sites, all of which had thumbtack message postings at some point Saturday afternoon, promoted the event and urged Auburn fans to attend.â€
The fact that supposedly independent media outlets are promoting a school’s agenda damages the Rivals, Scout and ESPN brands. Particularly damaged in this case is the Rivals.com brand since the Rivals’ Auburn site apparently edited video of the event following allegations that Auburn might have violated NCAA recruiting rules.
So much for editorial integrity.
While Auburn fans are downplaying the alleged violations or saying no violation took place, Evan Woodbery of the Auburn Beat blog at al.com issued this forecast, “I’d be very surprised if Auburn didn’t self-report at least a couple of secondary violations. Whether the university will share that information with us remains to be seen. Auburn often takes months or in some cases years to release NCAA correspondence requested under Alabama’s open-records law.â€

As an objective observer, I find all this stuff humorous. Auburn looks like morons with all of this, but saying that this is a big deal is overblown. And saying that the rivals brand has been “particularly damaged” is even more overblown than the violation itself. Rivals isn’t going to skip a beat. You guys are making a mountain out of a molehill.
The one thing I’m looking forward to though is Lache Seastrunk’s welcome to Alabama football the first time he sees action against you guys. I get all giggly just thinking about it!

It may take the NCAA time, but at some point, the organization will examine how many schools utilizes these recruiting services as surrogates. Perhaps we’ll eventually even see a move to label these things as boosters. 😉
BTW, it is just fun to hoist Auburn fans with their own petard. All we’ve heard for about three or four months is Gadsden. Gadsden. Gadsden. Now we know Auburn has cheated (albeit only secondary) for a fact.

All I ever hear is shots leveled at Alabama regarding Rivals and how UA influences the recruiting rankings. Not saying I believe that, but it’s just weird to see these accusations flowing in the opposite direction.

And to answer your question, we won in ’98 and ’99, and you guys won in ’03, ’04, and the ’04 SECCG. I don’t see how it’s relevant now, seeing as there is not a single player or coach on either team that was involved in any of those games. But I know how you Auburn fans like to keep up with those kind of numbers to msasage your inferiority complex, so I guess you can hold up three fingers when you come waltzing into Neyland Stadium this year.

Good question Omni. I’m not sure. I think the NCAA’s biggest fear is putting recruits and boosters in such close proximity.
I can think of about 1000 things that could go wrong when you mix boosters and recruits.
Also, I think the NCAA is grappling with how to deal with the commoditization of recruiting information. I expect there will be some legislation in the next few years as more and more teams use the media as recruiting tools.

Congratulations on that trophy win last year, Auburn. I think we’d both like to forget that entire season. But seeing how it is four in a row and not three, get to work on printing those “fear the thumb” t-shirts immediately. I’ll be looking forward to it, and I’ll be there in Section K.
