UPDATE: Has the video on Rivals.com been edited? According to fans who have viewed the original video and the video now on the Rivals site, it has. Here is a Rivals national board thread with further discussion. If anyone doubted how close some of these “reporters” and sites were to the teams they allegedly cover—this should do it.

UPDATE 2: That Woodbery link I posted, it no longer works at 9:34 p.m. Why?

UPDATE 3: Woodbery has new story: AU to examine possible secondary violations.

Randy Kennedy of the Mobile Press-Register explained Auburn’s recruiting philosophy in a column over at al.com. He writes, “Offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn has a catchy name for the unique tactics employed by the Auburn coaching staff to replenish a roster that deteriorated quicker than most anybody thought possible during the final years under Tommy Tuberville.
Malzahn, in Mobile to speak at the annual L’Arche Football preview banquet last week, called it ‘extreme recruiting.'”

Extreme recruiting violations perhaps. At least if you believe the Internet chatter.

Chatter on the Internet asserts the Auburn staff violated rules in this video from the Opelika-Auburn News. A similar video is also available at Rivals.com. The O-A News describes the video, “Saturday night, hundreds of fans showed up to watch Auburn University recruits roll Toomer’s Corner during one of the biggest recruiting weekends of the year.” According to Evan Woodbery at al.com, at least 100 people were at the event.

What was wrong with the video? Perhaps these two NCAA rules that were forwarded to my attention:

13.10.6 Introduction of Prospective Student-Athlete.
An institution may not introduce a visiting prospective student-athlete at a function (e.g., the institution’s sports award banquet or an intercollegiate athletics contest) that is attended by media representatives or open to the general public. Violations of this bylaw do not affect a prospective student-athlete’s eligibility and are considered institutional violations per Constitution 2.8.1. (Revised: 1/14/97)

13.7.3 Activities During Unofficial Visit.
An institution may not arrange miscellaneous, personalized recruiting aids (e.g., personalized jerseys, personalized audio/visual scoreboard presentations) and may not permit a prospective student-athlete to engage in any game-day simulations (e.g., running onto the field with the team during pregame introductions) during an unofficial visit.  Personalized recruiting aids include any decorative items and special additions to any location the prospective student-athlete will visit (e.g., hotel room, locker room, coach’s office, conference room, arena) regardless of whether or not the items include the prospective student-athlete’s name or picture.  (Adopted: 8/5/04, Revised: 5/14/05, 4/27/06)

Does the video violate those NCAA rules? Odds are someone in the SEC will report it to the conference and the NCAA.

  1. We the American people are tired of reading and listenin to “I’m tellin on you” sec media. Can we please just play some football?

  2. Bama jr, are you saying violations should be overlooked? It’s one thing to claim recruiting violations in Gadsden with no proof, but different when there is actual video of said violations. Chiznick may not be running his mouth like Lame Kiffen at UT, but he’s committing recruiting violations just like Kiffen. And as a Bama fan(I assume you are), you should want these violations by Auburn brought to light.

  3. Absolutely amazing that you ignorant bammers post this garbage.

No coach introduced the players. They were introduced by fans who were at the event.

And it wasn’t a simulation of a gameday atmosphere. It was a rolling of a tree. Get over yourselves.

  4. Hello Wow. Does it matter who introduced the players? It could have been a fan. It could have been a coach. It could have been a PA announcer. Honestly, does the NCAA care?

That is a serious question? I posted this since I don’t know the answer.

As for gameday simulation—all it took at Tennessee was a smoke machine. Having all those fans there in a pep rally type event, sure raises a few interesting compliance questions. Can you say for certain, that doesn’t cause you some pause with the draconian NCAA?

    Will Auburn self-report this?

  5. I would love for these violations to be brought to light but just get sick of this site ramblin on and on about garbage! But hey, I’m the one who keeps lookin at it right? Every once in a while ill find a bama recruiting report. Maybe they should change the name to the crapstone??

  6. Secondary violations are a blip on the radar cappy, and you know it. If they are self reported , nothing comes from it.

Trivisa question: How many self reported secondary violations has Saban reported to the NCAA ?

I know its more than two.

Quit grasping for straws. The Gadsden deal is getting to your head.

  7. Secondary violations are minor. However, you’ve said nothing will come of this. I’d be careful, if you don’t self-report, then this could turn major. 😉

  8. “Extreme Recruiting”
    How about “Extreme Bullshit”.
What a waste of time money and PR.
If a fart wafts out of Lee County Phil Marshall would try to describe it as the sweet smell of success.
He is a charleton and a poor on at that. And yet the aubbo jugheads lap up his vision and false hopes like a complimentary buffet at pizza hutt.

  9. Ballplay is getting nervous. The last thing that needs to happen is for Auburn to be set back by rules violations. He is just hoping beyond all hope that the Auburn conspiracy theories are true. Way to be a true Auburn man!

Seriously dude, where is all of your proof about the Gadsden stuff at? Auburn message boards? Like they have ever been right on anything concerning Bama. Just don’t get your hopes up too much.

But Auburn did commit secondary violations. Sure, not much will come out of it, but if Chizik keeps it up, something will be done. Desperate times call for desperate actions. Which is what Auburns recruiting has turned into.

  10. Look man, Ill say it again. I dont care if we did violate secondary rules. Heck , we probably did. Im O.K. with that. We will not get into trouble over it. Period. You guys hoping we get some sort of sanctions over a secondary violation is the joke. You yourselves have done the very thing you bitch about. Get a grip. When you hear about Seastrunk in a Charger, Ill listen.

  11. Who cares, stupid rule. Is anyone actually worried about team Chiznik’s recruiting ability?

    RTR!!!

  12. You should be the jimmy. If we can get top 10-15 classes year in and out, we will continue to dominate you turds.

  13. Ballplay, do you mean continue to dominate at the tune of 36-0? It may interest you that Seastrunk was not in a Charger but his momma sure was driving a new Caddy, but I am sure Lowder and Dye had nothing to do with it, now remember, keep it down home cuz!

  14. Hey Aubie, I hope you are 10-15 consistently, that way when we hang another shutout beatdown on you then we will have something to be be proud of.

  15. I hope Auburn loses every game they play. You won’t see Ballplay or Julia coming to a Bama board with their chest poked out like Auburn is relevant. They will fold up their Auburn flags and put them up and wait for the day they once again can jump on the Auburn bandwagon.

  16. jimmyo …You act like a top 10-15 class isnt good….Youve been sniffing a little much glue brother.

Your rivals rankings have gone to your head. In the past two “CROOTIN NATIONAL CHAMPYEENCHIPS” look at the average ranking of your recruits. Its barely top 5. Oversigning is what got you guys the title . 30 this year, and over 30 last year. So in theory, you didnt get the best players, according to your own methods. Wich is relying on a Bammer based ranking system.

Yes, Aubun could and will consistantly whoop that arse with 10-15 ranked classes.

  17. Ballplay, recruiting services don’t work that way. Rivals only ranks a team on 22 signees (at least if I understand its formula correctly.) Signing 28 or 30 or 32 or 454 doesn’t matter.

  18. I dont htink so cap…..You have an average players ranking, then an average of those players in the whole class. Either way, you aint number one in quality of talent. If you dont believe it , look it up.

  19. Here it is for last year on average ratings of the signees.

#1 Florida with 19 signees avg. rating 3.94
#2 USC with 19 signees avg. rating 3.89
#3 Texas with 20 signees avg. rating 3.85
#4 Georgia with 19 signees avg. rating 3.84
    #5 Bama with 27 SIGNEES !! avg rating 3.81

Dudes thats still a good class but as we can see they did NOT !!! win the quality of talent recruiting war. Just the sheer numbers war.

  20. I didnt think I would get a response …..Typical.

  21. Whatever Ballplay. It was a better class than Auburn had by far. The gap continues to widen. I would say Auburn is at least 2 years behind Bama on sheer talent. Will the gap widen? If Chizik doesn’t win early, then probably yes. Chizik will only get two tries at Bama. He will be gone if he can’t win one of the two. Then you guys get to start all over again. If chizik doesn’t get you guys on probation first, it will take him awhile to get Auburn going.

  22. I agree with you. He will get two years. And Ive said before that I would love to have some of your players, that Saban is the best recruiter in CFB. I was just making a to jimmyo, and the rest of the uninformed Bammer nation.

  23. Ballplay, where do you suppose Seastrunk’s momma got the new caddy to drive down to the big pus meeting? That limo and big pus gathering has netted Aub how many verbals? Oh that’s right ZERO. Now keep it down home cuz!

  24. Only a racist would say tha A black woman couldnt afford a Cadillac…..Thats downright shameful Bamaman.

Just kiddin man, dont blow a gasket.
