The New York Times suffered a revenue decline of 18.6 percent in the quarter and a net loss of $0.34 per share excluding charges. (See embedded Reuters report below for more details.)
With ad sales worsening and money tight, will the New York Times sell another Alabama newspaper? The AP raised that question in its NY Times earnings preview Monday (see below). “The Times Co. is still hoping to raise another $150 million or so by selling its 17.8 percent stake in a partnership that owns the Boston Red Sox. Other smaller newspapers published by the company in Massachusetts, Alabama, California, Florida, Louisiana, North Carolina and South Carolina conceivably could be put up for sale, although buyers are currently scarce,” the AP wrote.
Earlier this year, the Times sold the Florence Times Daily to a private newspaper group for an undisclosed amount. (Read report on the sale here.)
This is of interest to Alabama fans because the New York Times Company owns the Tuscaloosa News. Here is a thought, maybe Boone Newspapers, the group that once leased the Tuscaloosa News, could buy it and run it. The Tuscaloosa News is a valuable property for several reasons, but Tidesports.com has to be considered a property with immense growth potential.

The NYT is a liberal peice of trash. I wouold hate to see anyone lose their jobs, but this paper is all about opinion, not objective reporting.
Why is it that the media has gotten so polarized? Heck the difference between Fox News and CNN is even more appearent than an Alabama and Auburn fan. But as always, the truth lies in the middle.
The problem with the major media in this country is its inability to admit its biases. Study after study after study shows that reporters at the major institutions are more liberal and less religious than the general population, but somehow this doesn’t worry newsroom managers. However, newsrooms strive to increase ethnic diversity to make the newsroom look more like America.
Doesn’t that seem idiotic? Shouldn’t a newsroom both look like and think like America?
As for where the truth lies, it rarely lies in the middle. I’m reminded of one of my favorite quotes from Marc Bloch in his book the Historian’s Craft: There are in the world scholars whose good nature has worn itself out in seeking a middle ground between antagonistic statements. They are like the little chap who, asked for the square of the number two, when one neighbor whispered “four†and the other “eight,†thought he had hit the mark in answering “six.â€
Cap…….Dont misunderstand. I absolutely believe in an absolute truth. No question. That was in reference to Fox and CNN. Im more apt to beleive Fox than CNN. But that doesnt mean that CNN is wrong all the time. I guess a better analogy wouldve been the ” two sides to every story” line.
Ok, I understand better now…I agree. CNN often gets things right, but there is such systemic bias in that organization it makes it hard to trust what they report.
How many Jayson Blairs didnt get caught. How many Dan Rather type stories were never contridicted. Ive about lost all hope with the national media. Its gotten to the point where we have to go to our own teams to hear news reported the way we want.
What natianal media outlet do you consider the most credible?
The Wall Street Journal and the Financial Times of London do the best jobs of covering the US in both political and economic issues. I watch Fox and Bloomberg; I used to watch MSNBC and CNN. I stopped watching CNN way back in college. I stopped watching MSNBC when they put that clown Olbermann on.
For all the problems at the NY Times, I still read it daily online. The paper won five Pulitzers this year for a reason—they have good writers. Most of the news and commentary is produced with a bias; however, if you know that going in, it provides a useful experience.
That bias is present from all news sources. I’ve argued for years that news outlets need to admit that bias will filter into journalistic efforts. But, the media elites continue to insist that journalists never push personal agendas.
I think most journalists will try to do the right thing, but when everyone in the newsroom believes the same thing (almost every writer at the major papers is a liberal based on surveys) then you don’t have the necessary checks and balances.
Fox News flourishes for a reason—viewers believe their views and values aren’t represented in the mainstream outlets. Instead of learning from that, CNN and others ridicule Fox. What does that get them? lower and lower ratings.
I dont know what you think of the BBC, but their coverage on the United States is often better than you get here. I know that they are liberal , but probably not as bad as CNN or CBS. Their worldwide coverage is lightyears ahead of CNN . In the whole Georgia / Russia oil skirmish a few months back they were reporting things you never saw on American T.V. My four favorite journalists / media personalities are……….

4. Rick and Bubba
I like the BBC because they do a much better job reporting instead of editorializing.
I like the UK media outlets because they have usually have better writers (the UK’s system of education is much better than the US), and have a better grasp of the story.
As an aside, UK’s universities are also better than most in the US.

the final straw for me with cnn was when i found out they had an office in one of saddam’s golden palaces. now just how objective could they be about what was going on under saddam hussein under those circumstances??

Its a concentrated effort to ease their propaganda into the masses heads without being too obvious. Unless (like you said cap) you know what your looking for. At least FOX is honost about it. They arent trying to hide anything.

Latest gripe in my butt. Obama letting our enemies know EXACTLY how we retrieved information from terrorists. WHAT THE HELL IS HE THINKING ? Like Cheney said . Why doesnt he also disclose what information was retrieved from the interogations ? If Cheney said that, then I can guarantee you that some VALUABLE life saing information was retrieved. My problem with the american media is that it paints Americans, our politics and every other aspect of our society as being ignorant and backward.
Nothing good about America ever finds its way to the TV screens of other countries. Nothing.
Our own press is our worst enemy, they paint americans as being fat, lazy, and greedy….. and undeserving of the standard of living we have. It is because of press that we are reviled by even our allies.
They are just following suit of our commander in cheif. Or, he is following suit of the media. Either way its bad.
