Lane Kiffin committed yet another secondary NCAA violation that the University of Tennessee was forced to report. WBIR reported, “The incident involved head football coach Lane Kiffin calling former UT recruit Alshon Jeffery after National Signing Day. Coaches are not allowed to recruit athletes who have signed with other schools after National Signing Day.” (H/T Blutarsky)

What is the over-under on number of NCAA violations committed by Kiffin before the season starts?

UPDATE: Reports of an NCAA violation were wrong. Technically, Kiffin committed a violation of the national letter of intent system, according to College Football Talk. Does that makes it better or worse?

  1. I don’t know who made the worse hire, UT with Kiffen or Auburn with Chiznik(Langford spelling). I tend to think the Chiznik hire was worse, but time will tell.

  2. Nevermind that Jeffrey said Kiffin never made the gas pumping comment.

God forbid Kiffin clearing his name.

This will not go on my site. You know why? IT’S NOT NEWS. Saban has them every year. You know why they aren’t reported? IT’S NOT NEWS.

  3. Bamafan, As big of a clown as Kiffin is, I still think the hiring of Chizik was ten times worse.

I think Kiffin will be mediocre at best, and of course, will never defeat UGA, Florida, and ‘Bama.

Chizik on the other hand… what more do I need to say?

  4. First do we know Jeffrey recanted or is that just spin coming from Kiffin and UT officials? As far as I know, ESPN stands by its report.

I would agree with you that the NCAA violation is stupid. He should be able to contact someone who said something he felt to be untrue.

However, your assertion this isn’t news is laughable. IT IS NEWS or all these television websites, newspapers and blogs wouldn’t be writing about it. And you wouldn’t be responding to it. Nice try to spin it away though. But don’t worry. Soon the subject will change from these minor issues and the SEC will be talking about the 2009 season.

  5. Vile fans aren’t used to bad news being widely reported. They’ve been protected for years by the likes of Roy Kramer, Doug Dickey, and the Tennessee media. Vile fans beware: those days are over. Capstonereport is right, Lame Kitten breaking NCAA rules, no matter how minor, IS newsworthy.

  6. And lest we forget, Kiffin made this news by being a dumbass in regards to Florida coach Urban Meyer.

In case anyone doesn’t know this, the news business is all about covering the actions of dumbasses.

  7. Ghost, according to Chris Low today (http://myespn.go.com/blogs/sec/0-6-79/Another-secondary-violation-for-Kiffin.html), it’s only Kiffin who’s “cleared his name”.

Per Low: “Kiffin has denied making those comments and said Jeffery has told him that he doesn’t know where they came from. That’s despite Wilson telling The State newspaper last month that Kiffin did indeed make the comments.”

If you’ve got evidence to the contrary, why don’t you post it at your site That would be news, wouldn’t it?

  8. Well, the Tennessee people will be in denial up to the day that probation comes to them. Fulmer had developed a great system of keeping most of the bad things out of the media, and handling major problems internally. But it seems to be gone now. But Kiffin has brought this on himself. All schools report minor violations. But like Cap said, Kiffin being a dumbass has put the spotlight on him. Tennessee fans need to blame their coach instead of the media on this. I could care less, but I do think it is funny as hell that every move he makes is getting so scrutinized. If you are going to be dumb, then you have got to be tough. I guess we will see how tough Kiffin is.

  9. Whats the difference now with the Kiffen “pumping gas” accusation made by the kid from S.Carolina and the Saban “threat” comment made by the kid from Ole Miss ?

I seem to remember a giant uproar about morals in blogs and such.

  10. Umm surely you are joking. ESPN freaking reported the Jeffrey comment not some unknown jackass reporter who said it on some private message board where nobody could read it and then a blog repeated it so everyone could see it.

ESPN is a professional news organization, The State newspaper is a professional news organization with reporters who attached their names to the stories.

It didn’t originate from some unknown source with an agenda.

  11. Ballplay, none of that crap even matters. Next year you will probably have even more stories like these in the off-season. Kiffin likes the publicity though. He thinks the negative publicity is a good thing. But everyone wants to take shots and the top teams in the SEC. This conference is the most cut-throat league in the country now. I expect it to get worse than this in the coming years.

  12. I absolutely agree………..It doesnt matter.
