Women’s team wins SEC opener
(Via UA) TUSCALOOSA — Alabama’s lone senior Shelley Godwin stepped up in a big way for the Alabama women’s tennis team (9-0, 1-0 SEC), coming back from a set and 5-2 down to clinch a win for the Crimson Tide in the team’s opening conference match against the Arkansas Razorbacks (5-3, 0-1 SEC) 4-3. It was Alabama’s first win over Arkansas since 2005 and second straight dual win this season in which it dropped the doubles point.

“We talk about every match being the way mine ended up,” Godwin said. “This was a huge win, especially since we lost the doubles point. For us to take four singles wins was amazing. Arkansas is a good team and fought super hard, but today we fought harder.”

Men win SEC opener
(Via UA) FAYETTEVILLE — The 20th-ranked Alabama men’s tennis team opened up SEC play with a 6-1 win at No. 56 Arkansas on Friday at the George M. Billingsley Tennis Center. With the win, the Crimson Tide improves to 10-1 on the season and 1-0 in conference play, while the Razorbacks fall to 6-4 overall and 0-1 in league matches.

“This was one of those matches that could have gone either way,” said head coach Billy Pate. “We were up 3-1 but with three matches in the third set, so it was tight. We had some experienced guys in those positions to finish the job. I give a lot of credit to Arkansas. They are a very good team and gave us all we could handle. It’s important we get ready for the trip to Baton Rouge and another difficult road test against LSU on Sunday.”

  1. Yawn. The funniest thing about the whole thing was the story in the “News” that the meal was so bad at the Barber’s Museum that a couple of the players had to eat at a local Huddle House after the banquet.
Memo to Gene Hallman – have the banquet at the Huddle House next time.
